At what point does corporate brand identification and product fetishization start to seem creepily cultlike? I don't know, but Apple users are really starting to blur that line. Frankly, I've grown tired of the irrational Cult of Apple over the past couple years. So much so that I barely like to mention I use their products (yes, yes, I'm a Mac user - and a PC user - and the owner of multiple iPods). But today was the last straw. I clicked on The Huffington Post's Tech section and saw [...]

Continuing some thoughts from the road, the second installment of last week's road tripping took in more of Vermont, then onto New Hampshire and eventually Maine. Things took an unexpected turn, as I tired of Spotify play lists for periods and resorted to *shock* - - *horror* - - FM radio.... [...]

A Funny Thing Happened on the way out of Consumption Bender: The status of being bent for more than a day. Usually results in loss of memory, money, strange tattoos, and other things you'll have a hell of a time explaining. (Urban Dictionary) Things were going so well. For a month I had been thoroughly enjoying my new, clean-living, acquisition-free existence . Despite the fact that pretty much everything not nailed into a wall has been on sale [...]

Perfect for your next sonnet writing party I received my first piece of reader mail this week, from a memoirist: Dear Chic Fatigue, I just saw on my weekly e-sale roundup a "poet blouse." (I admit, at first I felt jealous cause there was no "prose blouse.") I looked it up and saw it was similar to the "peasant blouse," with which I am very familiar. That got me thinking about how many pieces of clothing have names related to class and occupation. Were artists [...]

K, I probably have enough clothing Over July 4th weekend, I noticed a Facebook post by a friend about something called The Compact . The objective: to counteract the negative global impacts of US consumer culture; and to reduce clutter and waste with the goal of simplifying one's life. The rules: buy no non-essential new items for a year. Food, underwear, and safety items are OK; as is anything secondhand, bartered for, and the receipt of anything from formerly purchased subscriptions. (Curiously, brake fluid is mentioned, which I guess is an essential item if you [...]

Chloë Sevigny at the CFDA awards It's a busy time here at Chic Fatigue HQ: A new season is upon us—our favorite!—so CF is trying to make crucial assessments on shorts length, sandal acquisition, and get a handle on swimsuit trends before the month is out. But no rest for the weary! On Monday night, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) held its annual awards ceremony, which took my mind off the pressing issues of summer wardrobe and had me pondering some larger questions about American fashion. The CFDA awards are the [...]

Anish Kapoor, Leviathan For the 7 th grade science fair, I wrote a paper on how color influences mood. More of a book report than a science project, I read a couple of articles on the observed effects of colors on human behavior, (e.g. babies cry more in yellow rooms; prisoners are less irritable in blue cells). For the required experiment, I made five different color "helmets" by stapling sheets of oak tag into cylinders and had classmates report on their feelings after spending several minutes with their heads inside. The result? Noses were smushed [...]

Size Matters Let's go back to 1996. I am a 15-year-old exchange student in Paris. The bread is good, cheese is too weird for me, wine is thoroughly uninteresting, and my most significant discoveries are of Jarvis Cocker, Diptyque, and Mandarina Duck. My host sister and her chic friends all have these sleek little zip-around wallets, made from a soft, non-leather material that I'm going to guess was neoprene. (Mandarina Duck no longer makes wallets with this fabric.) My wallet—large and plastic with cartoon monkeys on it—made me feel like the ugly American. [...]

Woodstock anorak One day, it will be summer. Until then, most of us still need a coat. Now, I love, love, love my two-year-old water-wind-sleet-whatever-proo f Postcard jacket (nickname: "The Fortress"). If my house were on fire, I'd save that coat, my laptop, and my vintage Balenciaga sunglasses . But after March 20, I want The Fortress out of the daily rotation, for, among other reasons, my entirely unscientific belief that wearing lighter jackets can initiate an atmospheric warming trend. Hence the need for what I call the transition coat : a medium-weight [...]

As I get back up to speed after a short hiatus, my inbox is overflowing, but I'm completely satiated by New Zealand act, Street Chant . The band's forthcoming album, Means , has a street date for Australia and USA of April 19th via Arch Hill Recordings . The entire record is a crunching and energetic pop-punk irrerverance. Fronted by female rockers Emily Litter and Billie Rogers, the revolving cast of characters has slowed down and the band currently sits ready to pop onto the US [...]

Rrrrr... Zzzzz... Rrrrr... Zzzzz... The Elegant Four So Tired (1965) [...]

The Fatigue's are a cool new band out of Brighton England with a great sound. The lyrics are tongue in cheek clever and the guitar interplay between Steve and Lee is tight as hell. They cite The Libertines and Jimi Hendrix as two of their major influences,as a fan both I recommend these guys. Great new music from a hard working band over the pond. Check out The Fatigue on Myspace Take The Jump For Mp3's and a cool video Dirty Comedown Dirty Comedown [...]
