The Feelies at The Bell House last Saturday ( more by Greg Cristman ) Jangly post-punk legends The Feelies just played two NYC-area shows last week, and they've since announced the return of their annual July 4 shows, which they'll play in their hometown of Hoboken this year. The shows will happen on July 4, 5 and 6 at Maxwell's . Tickets to night 1 , night 2 , night 3 , and all three nights [...]

Comedian John Mulaney has two shows in one night coming up at The Bell House on June 6 . Both will feature other guests TBA and are benefits for The Innocence Project , which is "a national litigation and public policy organization dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted people through DNA testing and reforming the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice." Tickets to both the early (7 PM) and late (10 PM) shows are still available. The last time we wrote about John, [...]

I'll be spinning some tunes this Record Store Day, Saturday April 20th at 5:00PM, at In Your Ear Records, 462 Main Street, Warren, Rhode Island. If you've followed this blog for long, you know I will probably play a fairly eclectic mix of music. If you're local to the area, stop in and say hi. Some band called the Feelies will play an acoustic set at 2:00 PM at What Cheer Antiques on Angell Street in Providence, RI in advance of their show at the Met in Pawtucket that evening. That might be worth checking out too...
How is your weekend going, valued reader? I'd hoped for quiet time spent writing a new short story I've been trying to sort out in my head, but an opportunity to go out on the town presented itself last night and I could not refuse. Poor Ben was supposed to go on a date but [...]

After a 19-year break, post-punk essential band The Feelies are still churning out great music with their fifth studio album, Here Before . They’ll be at the 9:30 Club this Wednesday, March 27, presented by Dogfish Head Brewery . People generally shit on New Jersey, but if anything good ever emerged from the Garden state, it’s The Feelies (and The Shirelles, and The Vivian Girls, and…I digress). Often lumped in with post-punk or (my favorite) the “college rock” genre, Feelies' songs are known for layered jangly guitars and the fast pace [...]
by Benn Ray The Feelies. The Ottobar. Baltimore, MD. Saturday, March 23, 2013 I'm at that point in my life where, sadly, age sometimes plays a part in my going to see live music. I don't mean that I miss shows and I use the excuse that it's because I'm too old because I don't have the energy or can't hack getting up for work the next day - I'm still fine in that area, thankfully. [...]
8PM. Ottobar. Remington, Baltimore. 2549 N. Howard St. The Feelies! "Of the countless bands to emerge from the New York City underground during the post-punk era, few if any were as unique and influential as the Feelies; nerdy, nervous, and noisy, even decades later their droning, skittering avant-garde pop remains a key touchstone of the American indie music scene." -All Music

Before - The Beatles During - Fats Domino After - The Feelies

I'll be playing tunes this Friday at Hawthorne Theatre with my good pal, DJ Bob Ham . It's always a fun time-I mean, it is Happy Hour on a Friday. I suppose the goal will be to get things warmed up/getting people hot and bothered for the Hot Water Music show later that evening. I think we can do it. But despite what the photo to the left implies, we won't be spinning records. Instead we will be gazing into the glow of our laptops, which will likely resemble two grown men playing Battleship. Less sexy than [...]
[photo from Yo La Tengo Hanukkah Diary At this point chronologically, the Feelies v.3 has lasted almost as long as versions 1 or 2. But what has been consistent is that sound -- the methodical, trance-like rhythms providing a backdrop for the melodic and precise guitar work of Glenn Mercer. Another consistent aspect of the band is their commitment to Maxwell's and Hoboken. When Yo La Tengo came calling offering an opening gig to benefit their shared storm-tattered town, the Feelies were there on Night 3 to [...]

The Feelings, "The High Road"

The Feelies: The High Road enjoy

Nesse ano, Andrew Bird [...]

Just about every year, Yo La Tengo take over their hometown club Maxwell's for a series of Hanukkah shows, which are generally described as amazing and which often feature a few special guests sitting in. This year's run of shows, no exception, had it share of help from indie luminaries. Andrew Bird played scratchy violin attacks during the band's cover of the Velvet Underground's "Heroin," and fellow Jersey indie legends the Feelies traded guitar freakouts with Yo La Tengo on a sprawling 16-minute version of the VU's "Sister Ray." The Feelies also sat in on Yo La's own "The Room [...]

[screenshot from this video ] While Hanukkah at Maxwell's is a long-time Yo La Tengo tradition, another of the band's regular gigs is the WFMU Marathon where YLT plays requests which are invariably eclectic covers. While Night 3 of this year's Hanukkah was a tremendous show for a variety of reasons, it was one cover that stole the show. This night will forever be known as the "Sister Ray" show. I asked YLT's long-time superb FOH Mark if he'd ever seen them play the song - they have done a ton [...]

photo from The Sun Is Paul McCartney to play with the remaining members of Nirvana ? In a media frenzy set off by British paper The Sun the facts have become a bit obscured, but the chance that the Beatle will play with Grohl and Novoselic at a Hurricane Sandy benefit tonight at Madison Square Garden has not been ruled out. A publicist from Nasty Little Man, which represents both Grohl and McCartney, told SPIN "we can neither confirm nor deny" the reports. [ Spin [...]

Weezer copied this album cover - right down to having the double "ee" in their band name! Scandalous! The Feelies (1980) The Beatles (1968) I guess this is a partial John Lennon week on Reselect, by something like coincidence. I decided on this pair of songs for Cover Friday this morning, and then realized that it's the second John Lennon song in a row. But that's fine . . . John certainly deserves any number of songs to be featured here. And [...]
