Definitive college rock "band's band" the Feelies returned for a little reunion action last year, much to the joy of aging geeks everywhere (you know, people like us). If you missed 'em, they are returning for a boffo encore-to play their 1986 sophomore LP The Good Earth in its entirety at New York's All Tomorrow's Parties festival in September. They are joining Jesus Lizard, Flaming Lips, Melvins, Suicide and more for an event a jaded-but-still-sprightly codger like myself wouldn't miss for all the Aztec Camera LPs and Dave Kendall autographs in the world. Come on feel some Feelies:

I had no good excuse for discovering the Feelies too late, but by the time I fell in love with their albums (The Good Earth and Only Life, in particular) they had already broken up. As the years went by I assumed they would always remain atop my personal list of bands that I hoped would reunite, even as others, like the Pixies and the Police, got back together. And then last year the group reformed, playing several shows in the New York area last Summer. I saw them on night two at their old [...]

Are you ready for the musical orgasm of your life? Take one of the single most influential rock bands ever, (in this case, the legendary R.E.M. ), tie in a classy and famed New York City venue ( Carnegie Hall ), and pepper in about 20 of the biggest names in indie rock and you've got yourself one helluva night. And one helluva tribute show. And one helluva story at the water cooler the next morning. Have you ever wanted to be the envy of all your friends? Well don't worry, I've got just the thing for you. Attend this show and no [...]

I don't know how many people actually check for my posts on S2S, but I do owe Rinjo and Señor Morbid. There's been a lot going on in Jackland, but things are finally looking up. Song: Slipping (Into Something) Artist: The Feelies Album: The Good Earth Comments: I always loved this decidedly Velvet-esque band, and this is my favorite track from what I feel is their best LP. I've always enjoyed hipping people (especially hot chicks) to lesser-known bands, and this tune was a consistent mixtape opener for many years. Song: Last Chance [...]
It's Sunday again, and as per usual, nothing exciting is happening anywhere in the world. People sleep late and hope they can relax for a few hours before the new work week begins. Meanwhile, I've reached the exact middle of my own work week, so I'm way closer to my next weekend than you are! Ha! In trying to write an introductory paragraph, I asked Ilya what topic I should pontificiate on. He said "cupcakes," then giggled softly. "Cupcakes are really what's in right now," he said, and giggled some more. Yup, I know what Ilya did all [...]

[image source] mp3: the feelies - what goes on got a pretty exciting email this morning... the feelies will be playing at least 3 more "reunion" shows this year. the last of those shows will be right here in dc, at the 9:30 club on saturday march 14 (which just so happens to be my birthday)! pretty sweet. the show has yet to be advertised so its not on 930.com , but you can get tickets right now by searching tickets.com [...]
>> We openly admit that we were largely stymied by Meneguar 's most recent release The In Hour , which cast the band's raw indie punk jams in a strange light via uncertain, folksy production (a hilarious comment at the band's MySpace drive-thru reads "I would like to offer to do your next recordings with my cellphone. I guess the sound will be a lot better then [sic] on your current record."). That said, the Brooklyn-based quartet is forever one of our favorites based on the strength of its two prior records, I Was Born [...]

On a Friday night I went with my best friend Broadway to a speak-out held at the Ninth Street entrance of Tompkins Square Park. It seems quaint now but at the time a Tent City had taken over the south western corner of the park, where any number of homeless drug addicts and would-be radicals lurked, gamboled and passed out headlong with scroungy dogs at their feet on the benches. Fires burned in trash cans. The police kept their distance. Broadway talked more than I did, but he urged me to speak to Donna, a pretty [...]

I've been getting a little static lately from the readers of this blog about the lack of posting frequency here. This is a blog. It's not my job, but it feels like it. A few months ago and I had to explain this to my son. He's kind of impressed at how many people actually read this (and I am too) but confused at how much time his Dad spends doing it. Today, on the phone he asked me how to download the songs here. So, rather than compose another one of my long winded and angular diatribes [...]

I know I've been writing about some older records lately, but you'll have to trust me when I tell you that I'm all over the road. I grew up in New Jersey, but that has nothing to do with my affinity for this band. I was doing my weekly scan of The Boston Phoenix Thursday looking for great shows in small venues when I came across a listing for a recently reunited 80's band called The Feelies at The Roxy caught my eye. I did a double take because I didn't even know they had reformed. I checked the ticket [...]

We mention in these electronic pages fairly regularly that we turned on to many great bands during our early teenage years due to Spin Magazine's then-very-reliable assessments of the American underground. In March 2007 we wrote here : "[w]e rhapsodize about this fairly regularly, but time was you could trust your glossy music magazines to make decent recommendations. And so it was that in 1988 or so Spin or some similar outfit gave The Feelies ' Only Life a glowing review so we walked across our suburb to the indie store in the basement of [...]

I have been buried in Feelies for a day or so. This is from their last album . Pinch comes halfway through the first verse. Plus you can see such focus in their faces! Classic band with everything out of print, which further punishes a struggling nation . First album live Feelies vid below. The Feelies "Crazy Rhythms" (live 1979)

Maybe, like me, you discovered the Feelies only after they had disbanded sixteen years ago. Maybe this is the first time you are hearing about them. Or maybe you are one of the lucky ones who saw the band play in their heyday, which spanned the decade of the 80s and ended in 1992. Thankfully, all of us now get the opportunity to see the Feelies this weekend in New York City and next month in Boston. This set of shows follows the band's reunion gigs over the summer. I saw one of their performances [...]
