Alright, so February is almost over, and i'm pumped. Beacause, starting in March, a flood of great albums are coming out. Seeing as i'm pretty new to this music journalism (hardly...) world, i don't have any cool new friends on the inside to give me any exclusive news or tracks, but i've got a couple tricks up my sleeve. For some of these that are coming out a little further in the future, i'll re-remind you, but here are the forthcoming album releases on my radar: 3.4.08 [...]

New Wax I'm so freaking stoked on the Felice Brothers. I've had them in heavy rotation ever since I stumbled on their album Tonight At The Arizona , and I'm sure I've come off as gushing fanboy ever since.. but hey, if the music moves you, shout it from the rooftops. Apparently the band impressed Conor Oberst when they toured with him because they've signed to his label Team Love, which is home to fine acts such as David Dondero, Jenny [...]

Not at the same time of course, but both shows are on back to back nights. Isbell makes his stop on Friday the 29th. Followed by the Truckers on Saturday March First. Isbell Tix $12 DBT Tix $25 The new DBT album is really kicking my ass. Here are a couple tracks from it: Drive-By Truckers - Two Daughters And A Beautiful Wife Drive-By Truckers Self-Destructive Zones [...]
Last night I saw The Felice Brothers and Drive-By Truckers at the Mezzanine . I'm not much for reviewing concerts, but I will say that DBT rocked as usual and I was really, really impressed with The Felice Bros. I'm glad because I saw ex-Trucker Jason Isbell not too long ago and was disappointed. He was sick and did his best to push through the concert by chugging Jack Daniels between songs, but in the end I left Slims really let down. Thankfully Will Hoge was able to steal the show [...]

As this so-called winter fades to spring, and it warms up in places, other than here - that need warming up, hippies everywhere start making road trip plans. Because from March thru August, outdoor music festivals are happening across the country from Newport to Galveston, Austin to Wilkesboro, Manchester to the Everglades. i'm not gonna try to act like i've been to any of these outside of Texas, but i will in due time. Here's a little info on some of the festivals that i wish i could go to: [...]
Come on people and doesn't get any better than this. If you live near by take the day off work, it'll be worth it! From Fingerprints : The Felice Brothers - Free In-Store / Free Lunch Tuesday, Feb. 12th, Noon Felice Brothers There is a small town in the Catskill Mountains where the nights are filled with music, and it's a family affair; mothers, brothers, and cousins all making a joyful racket; Jail, guns, and drugs are always a possibility, but so are love, laughter, [...]

As I put together today's mixtape, I realized that we're already 6 weeks into the new year. Just over six weeks ago, we were doing the whole christma-kuh-wanza holiday and new year's, and it was cold. Now, it's warm out and there are tornados ripping across the south, and it's almost like spring. Well, here in the southern states at least. Which reminds me- some of the year's first festivals are just around the bend. Not big festivals, but rather the fun local variety. I'm talking about the Oysterfest- which used to be on Boling Way in Buckhead early in [...]

It's hard to always keep an eye out for new music when my library is filled with tons of songs i haven't really given a listen. But in order to try (and per John's request), i'm gonna start a weekly, New Music Roundup . It may not always be newly released stuff, just new to me. i'll try to post it on or around friday, so you can have some new tunes to get you through the weekend...... so here's some newish songs i've been diggin' this week: [...]
There are 8 albums on the horizon that have me completely psyched . Arranged in order of soonest to oldest . Take a look and a listen: Erykah Badu: New Amerykah February 26 If you ask me, there isn't a more important female singer in the world of music. It's a double album. Plus, look at that hair. Watch her outstanding video for the first single: [...]

it's not hard to see why a lot of people were putting their money on jay farrar to make it further than jeff tweedy when the former bandmates put an end to uncle tupelo in 1994, especially when farrar's new band, son volt , released trace the following year...i'm not really treading into new territory by saying trace is an incredible album...one of the best of the 90's & one of my favorite alt-country records ever...full of twangy, heartfelt gems that don't overreach or fade from one to the next...& it's practically timeless...unfortunately, farrar has [...]

Over recent months, a few trusted friends have recommended the Felice Brothers from New York as a group that I simply must listen to. I haven't done so until now, and I am wondering what the heck took me so long. A band of (mostly) actual brothers from the Catskills, there's a raw and unfinished sound to their storytelling brand of folk-americana. I find that as you sit with them, the colors of their music start to come out in a warm rich burn, like a campfire at 2am. Very [...]
In effort to raise awareness about upcoming releases as well as finding a place for the numerous submissions we get, this post continues our weekly purging of free and legal MP3's for your listening enjoyment. The number of tracks will fluctuate each week depending on the songs uncovered or sent. It's our hope that you'll find a new favorite or another release to keep your eyes on. MP3: Biirdie - "Him" MP3: Biirdie - "Estelle" [from Catherine [...]
I'm always worried that Asaurus Records is on the cusp of throwing in the towel. Sometimes months go by when they don't update their website and I start to worry. But they did just update and improve their site, so hopefully we've got them for another year at least. In fact, in February there'll be a new record out that is a lo-fi compilation of covers of Depeche Mode tracks. Grumpy Bear contributes this cover of the song "World Full Of Nothing". The previous outing from Grumpy Bear on Abandoned Love [...]

New Wax I just got back from watching Todd Haynes' imaginitive biopic I'm Not There (yes, it took THAT long to get it in this town of Philistines.. thank Jesus for the one remotely independent theater we have), which I enjoyed thoroughly, yet will probably never review on this site because I'm not sure if I'm capable of tackling its complexity with any sort of well thought-out coherence. Cate Blanchett is totally Bob Dylan. I'm convinced of it. I'll admit, the first song I listened to [...]

I nearly did The Top 2007 Songs From 2007 (like this insane post from last year ). I decided to focus on 27 instead (2007 minus the zeroes). These are the songs I think are the most well-written , well-performed , well-done and well-worth a listen. 27. The National ~ Ada There is a great chance, if The Duchess and I ever have a baby girl, she will be named Ada. 26. Great Lake Swimmers ~ I Became Awake I always [...]

the felice brothers - your belly in my arms you know, just from the title, what kind of song this is going to be. a winter morning, the bright grey kind, the two of you lying in bed, she in front and you behind, facing the windows to watch inchoate snowflakes melt in streaks down the glass, and you breathe into your belly in an exaggerated manner in order to, if for only moment, collapse the space between you and the back of her, delighting in the spread of warmth across your middle as your hands, [...]
Aha! I'm getting the timing down for reviewing new music - early in the morning while Zach is still sleeping. This means being hunched over my computer at six on a Sunday morning listening to headphones, but nobody said it was going to be easy.
