Big Wave | Goldmine Our favourite home-county heroes return with another juicy slice of sunshine on new single Goldmine. Released on a staggeringly-hot chrome cassette via Art Is Hard , it's further justification of our statement that Big Wave are one of the finest new bands these shores has to offer. Urgent, energetic and brilliantly realised; Goldmine is GOLD. * MONEY | Bluebell Fields The first single [...]
The first words you hear on Junip's second album, Junip , are "what would you do/if it all came back to you?" It's hardly an original refrain in pop music, which has always held nostalgia for the past in high esteem. But, here, Junip's singer, Jose Gonzalez poses the question as if his unknown narrator has never before looked back and is suddenly shocked by what he sees. It's a theme that runs through the album, from the [...]
Originally the singer and keyboard player for Chicago based experimental band, Ga'an, Lindsay Powell seems to have her fingers in all kinds of proverbial pies. In addition to her previous projects, Skyblazer and Festival (the latter created alongside her sister), Powell's latest venture Fielded is once again taking her down the colourful path of futuristic psych pop. I hear it's nice this time of year. Created in a home-studio at the house she grew up in, I can't help bu...
★★★★☆ Well done to those charged with whittling down the electronic titan’s platinum anniversary down to just two discs — let’s also hope part 1 actually means there will be a part 2. Should your opinion of German labels be a stale cliché — maybe it’s those hard Ks in the name lending themselves to straight-talking effectiveness/ruthlessness — you’ll be thrilled by the automation of Justus Köhncke, Leandro Fresco and Dettinger, though perhaps less enamoured with little flits of the flatter that include Matias Aguayo’s "Walter Neff" not seeming to fit in anywhere. Those [...]
The Field lends his minimalist hand to this rendition of At The Drive-In's hit "One Armed Scissor." While the original is one of the best ways to open an album - intense immediacy, a battle cry for the triptych of urgency that kicks off Relationship Of Command - the Field's subversion of it into a muted version of itself with sporadic fairy-dust synths and stripped-down percussion is just another way to introduce what's to come: a slow burn that builds on itself over the course of nine minutes. The continuously added layers may never explode into ATDI bombast, [...]
Where's Junip ? It has been three years since Junip released their debut album Fields and this spring will see the release of their self-titled sophomore album. In preparation for the release of Junip , the band shared a second track off the album titled "Your Life, Your Call." The song is an intermingling of José González 's calming vocals, synth-driven beats, and lyrics that make you want to hum along. Junip [...]
Vocal pop-from-the-future via Lindsay Powell's solo project, Fielded. "Eve of the New Moon" comes off her upcoming, Ninety Thirty Thirty , it does well to drop hints of Kate Bush-worship with beautifully-arranged vocals and instrumentation akin to a Phil Collins' solo albums of the mid-80s. The album will be out on CAPTCHA Records on April 24, pre-order here .
We slept and we are sorry. That album you see up there? That album's very good. That album was sent to us a while ago in the depths of our winter hibernation. It rested, propped against our slumbering hard drives, melting the snow around it with its radiated pop joy. Pop joy being a naturally occurring source of heat, after all. We are sorry because it is great weird pop for people who don't like pop , and the rest of us who are bemused by why anyone would care to make the distinction. Lindsay [...]

After moaning about it yesterday , I decided to go for a walk after work with some tunes on. I got on the Butetown Link Road (A4232, road number fans) with the intention of dropping down into Hamadryad Park . Unfortunately there were no steps down and I didn't want to turn around on a bridge, especially as there were people behind me. So due to not wanting to look like a plonker, I proceeded to walk the length of the viaduct... like a plonker. Still it gave me a chance to listen to some tunes. [...]

I’ll Be Your Mirror 2013.
It'd been nigh on twelve long months since I'd last found myself clambering up the vertiginous inclines of Alexandra Park toward Ally Pally – a timescale no sooner contemplated than it'd been calculated, for each extreme was bookended by something utterly scintillating. Each was an I'll Be Your Mirror . This time taking place toward the beginning of an altogether merrier May, Karen O and her resurgent Yeah Yeah Yeahs plastered Saturday in a fluoro hue of glee, cherry-picking the likes of Dirty Beaches & The Field & Anika from a group filed [...]

Stream: Fielded “Ninety Thirty Thirty” (exclusive)
It's the times we live in, though we can't even tell anymore what kind of 'time' that is or could be; but maybe, when we've grown tired of discussing 'future shocks' and 'retromania', when we stop waiting for the future and stop longing for the past that probably was nothing but an illusion in the first place, maybe then comes a time when we actually rediscover the ability to focus on the art in and of itself, an ability that lets us appreciate again that kind of music that doesn't care for the 'time' it was written in, music that [...]

Fest Bests: I’ll Be Your Mirror 2013.
Returning for a third outing, if this year streamlined to but the one solitary day next month is to witness the return of All Tomorrow's Parties' tangential I'll Be Your Mirror festival to Alexandra Palace for an afternoon-cum-early evening-cum-black night shebang which looks set to be explosive, and so too expansive as any other. For where previous editions have focussed on altogether gloomier aesthetics ( Portishead called upon anyone and everyone from DOOM and Company Flow to Swans and GY!BE, whilst last year featured the likes of the Melvins, Slayer, Codeine and so on) this [...]
