There are musicians who perform solely to satisfy their ego. This makes up the majority of performers you will end up seeing. And then there are those in the small minority who perform because they must. Watching Eleanor Friedberger perform makes it clearly apparent that she falls into the latter. Unfortunately for her, the weight created by her work with brother Matt in The Fiery Furnaces might give off the impression that anything she would make outside of that project would be equally enigmatic and obtuse. Such an assumption would be made [...]

I've been a longtime fan of The Fiery Furnaces , through their their more listeningly challenging output and the three songs that aren't. Just kidding. You'll find their music way back in the first year of this blog, as well as a concert review that was a mixed bag . All that being said, my curiosity was piqued when I found out that Eleanor Friedberger , one half of the brother/sister duo that comprises the core of The Fiery Furnaces, was putting out a solo album. Sure, the two [...]
So this is kind of a weird time to be alive, when the President and the Republican Congressional leaders and the Democratic Congressional leaders are doing these press-conference showdowns where each

Eleanor Friedberger may be best known as one half of the brother/sister indie pop-rock duo The Fiery Furnaces , but this July will mark a new direction for the Brooklyn-based musician. With her first solo album, Last Summer , out tomorrow on Merge Records, Friedberger is kicking off a 10-stop tour in support. The album has a sound unique to that of the Furnaces, and is full of pretty guitars and keyboards, New York City themes, and thoughtful lyrics. The first single "My Mistakes" is a light, feel-good track that proves Friedberger's aptitude as a solo artist. Eleanor Friedberger [...]

Not to be outdone by her more ambitious brother, Eleanor Friedberger – one half of the art pop duo Fiery Furnaces – will release her first solo album on Tuesday, July 12. The album titled, Last Summer is currently streaming on NPR's website . The Oak Park-native recorded the album last summer and managed to maintain that sort of wistful, yet sunny vibe throughout. The album's opener and lead single "My Mistakes" is bouncy, but with just enough heaviness drenching Friedberger's light and smoky vocals. There are also some moody [...]

Happy Independence Day, Shufflers! For this American holiday, we've put together a playlist of songs that (sort of) reminds us of July 4. Well, at least, some of the titles give rise to the occasion. Some of them are more summer themed than anything else, but it's all in good spirit. Let's just be honest, there aren't THAT many American pride indie rock songs. The playlist spans genres across the board, from indie pop (Stars) to experimental (Animal Collective) to folk (Iron & Wine). Feel free to leave a comment with your favorite Fourth of July-inspired songs. [...]

Tweet Eleanor Friedberger has been pretty quiet about her first solo release: these tracks have been ready and waiting since last summer [yup], plenty of time to get the publicity machine up and running, but it was only in April that Merge Records announced the release . In the meantime, Eleanor and her brother Matthew have continued to play the odd acoustic set here and there as The Fiery Furnaces , and Eleanor's personal twitter page, created only three weeks ago, [...]
A little belated for me because of the gout-filled, work-filled depressing month of June but I was drinking and gambling and walking the boardwalk in AC this week and all seems back to normal with the foot, I got a 3-day weekend from work to look forward to, the Tour de France is starting tomorrow, and I got some pig to eat at Gina's annual celebration of pork and roasting so really, I'm ready for the goddamn summer to begin, belatedly. Let it be hot. Happy 4th of July to all my readers and friends. [...]

If spectators were at all surprised at the choice to host the recent Fiery Furnaces' show at the relatively small Cafe Du Nord, they should be even more surprised to see where one half of the Furnaces, Eleanor Friedberger , will be playing a solo show on July 26th: the rather tiny Hotel Utah (9:00 pm, $10, 21+). Todd's review of the small-scale FF show mentioned that "the Fiery Furnaces stripped down are revealed as a private universe of neurotic genius made public – sort [...]
This week brought the longest day of the year. And yet, I there seems to be less and less time to get shit done. No excuse for not keepin' up on what's güt. So here's the latest. Enjoy thoroughly. Mount Moriah "Lament" from s/t Eleanor Friedberger "My Mistakes" from Last Summer Rites "Unlikely Rare" from Demos Rüfüs "We Left" from RÜFÜS EP [...]

26-28 May, 2011 Part 2 of our 3 part review. You can read Part 1 here . Don't miss the final part tomorrow. Friday Pulp The best intentions go awry at Primavera , and you end up missing bands you want to see because it's too damn early to stop sitting down and drinking cheap drinks outside the festival. Fiery Furnaces fall by the wayside because of this ruthless reality, and [...]

Jeśli nie zostaniesz pogłaskana przez Pitchfork albo przeciwnie – olana przez widelca, za to broniona przez portale z niezależnością wypisaną na sztandarach – masz pecha. Nagrałaś najlepszą popową płytę ubiegłego roku, a twój debiut to jeden z najpiękniejszych albumów dekady? Mmm, OK, podejdź proszę do okienka [...]

photos by Tim Griffin Covering a range of material (drawn from their eight studio recordings) and for a duo whose songs are way out-there, the Fieries are amazingly down-to-earth. Especially surprising was the soul in the selections from the band's heavily conceptual Rehearsing My Choir , a collaboration with their grandmother, a Greek church choir director who originally spoke and sung half the vocal tracks. I had to force myself to listen to that release a few times, never really connecting with it, and yet [...]

Lost At Sea - The Fiery Furnaces by reversefrasier Ask a random person on the street about Brooklyn sibling band The Fiery Furnaces , and you will be met with a blank stare. But for nearly ten years, Eleanor and Matthew Friedberger have been the darlings of the art rock intelligentsia and quite a few more diverse fringy people as well. The Freidbergers are the product of a musical, creative family and their output has shown an infuriating insistance on reshuffling and exploring, in defiance of stylistic category. [...]
I haven't heard the voice of Eleanor Friedberger since the 2009 Fiery Furnaces album Take Me Around Again . That's too long if you ask me! Well, she's back, but the track above features Eleanor in a solo capacity. The 'Furnaces haven't broken up, so no worries. The forthcoming Friedberger album is titled Last Summer , and the track above, "My Mistakes," is the first to drop from it. It's just a nicely built piece of piano pop with some acoustic backing and quirky synth melodies. The fuzzy bass parts are a nice touch, [...]
