Please humor me for today while I take a trip down memory lane. Let me take you back somewhere between 15 and 20 years to when I was a kid in Junior High and High School who would go with my parents on Sundays when they went to a fairly large flea market. It was a good distance away; it took about 45 minutes to get there, and along the way, we would pass this used car lot named Eddie's Cruisers, which sold old cop cars, both marked and unmarked. Inner Circle - Bad [...]

stop reading this, and go buy this tshirt right fucking now . seriously, mishka is on fire this season and the new collection is sure to sell out mad fast. #### off on a little road trip tomorrow morning, gotta go kick it with my grandfather for his 80th birthday. he's been at the smithsonian for decades so i think the partygoers are going to be an interesting mix of anthropologists and linguists. hmmm. [...]

The Bluesfest scheduele is a little overwhelming. There are five different acts playing each of the six stages on each of the ten nights - you do the math. Schedueling conflicts often force you to make tough choices, and there are a lot of factors involved: it's not just which band you like more, but which band will put on a better show, how many times (if ever) you've seen the bands before, and, hell, which crowd will be less annoying (watch as the teenyboppers flock to Emily Haines - a ghastly sight). I thought I'd make some [...]

One of the reasons why I enjoy listing my favorite albums from a certain year is that it's so highly debatable. There are rarely two publications who have exactly the same order or number one album. There will always be arguments about year end lists, whether it be from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, or Stylus... it will never change. For example, here is my Top Fifty Albums of 2005 . At the end of this year, I will do my traditional top fifty albums, but for now, I just thought I'd share my top ten of the year so far [...]
Some new artists found at eMusic, get them through the trial offer of 25 free downloads. I've included a couple of mp3s for streaming, or to download. Once again MS.com seeks to mine tracks from the best albums, and rescue tracks from questionable ones, in service of creating an unstoppable time capsule of a season's worth of music. Spring time had its hits and its misses, but there was good to be had, friends. Let's take a second, as rainclouds and crippling humidity ruin our lives to remember the beautiful days we once loved and the soundtrack filling our ear buds as we loved them. We're taking a few days off to enjoy the extended weekend, celebrate our break up [...]

Goddamn soccer is amazing. So I figure I'll post about 20 songs or so (enough for a CD-R) and we'll see how this goes. There have been tons of great songs this year and I'd like to hold off on ranking them until December rolls around, mostly because the thought of pitting "The Greatest" against "Crazy" blows my mind. So here's the first part (of three) of my favorite songs of 2006 thus far. Don't forget to check out some 2005 tracks in the Half-time introduction . Band of Horses - [...]
April was easily the best month of the year so far musically, at least for me. I fell in love with the new Fiery Furnaces album, Maritime's We, The Vehicles finally had its U.S. release, and after six long years, one of my favorite musicians in the world released a new record. As always, I suggest you buy these direct from the labels, though you can purchase them from an online retailer or your local record store . The Fiery [...]

Washington DC's Pancake Mountain is a kids TV show with a difference. It features energetic LITTLE kids dancing not to day-glo smiley pop acts but bands such as the Arcade Fire, The Go! Team, Metric, The Subways, Anti Flag, The Fiery Furnaces, Shonen Knife and George Clinton . It's quite bizarre but great fun to watch. Creator Scott Stuckey says the show appeals to younger minds through witty word play and great music. "Since I've started the show, I've gotten a ton of CDs and e-mails from bands that do 'children's [...]

Inspired by the latest Contrast Podcast theme - quadruped meaning 'A four-footed animal' , the following is my top 5 songs about my favourite four footed animal, the trusty canine. Super Furry Animals - Golden Retriever A song from a band chin-high in animal references (see also - Fuzzy Birds, Hometown Unicorn, Mwng - Welsh for mane, Foxy Music and pretty much all their artwork ). It's a fuzzy rock'n' roll stomper. Singer Gruff had this to say about [...]

Totally posted Rob on the wrong day guys. "Whoa." The Fiery Furnaces - "Benton Harbor Blues": mp3 I've been listening to this record once a day all week, and every time it gets more amazing. It's kind of a genius album - the farther into you get into it, the less idiosyncratic and annoying it gets and the pop songs get better and better. As track 12, this song, all seven minutes of it, really carries the album to that next level. Buy and [...]
Less than a year after the down right strange "Rehearsing My Choir." But you know what it was a strange record but I still can't get enough of it especially "Guns Under the Counter" there is nothing else out there sounding like this band of late. "Bitter Tea" is still not as straight forward as there debut, its in the same mind set as "Rehearsing My Choir" just no odd narratives with Grandma. But it is still a strange record. The album is huge 15 tracks over 70 plus [...]

Plenty of interesting gigs coming up in the next few months (which I will be highlighting to you over the next two weeks). First up though, the Fiery Furnaces play Whelans on the 6th of May, tickets are priced €17.50. The band consists of a brother and sister who have released 3 albums and a long EP in the last three years. Last year's 'Rehearsing my Choir' is a monumentally ambitious ode to their grandmother, who features in musical narratives throughout the record. Critics and fans are divided on the record, but one thing everybody can agree on, [...]
