![[Boston Music Miscellany] Night Fruit, Kingsley Flood, The Figgs, Eldridge Rodriguez, The Hush Now](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3928394_lg.jpg)
A quick one, Boston-style, before I head up north for the weekend... I became a bonafide Night Fruit fan about 1 minute into a crowded Allston basement show back in January (RIP live music @ Wadzilla ), which is how long it took to decide I'd be sticking around for the trio's entire set. And within a few minutes of getting home that night, despite severe sleepiness, I was online searching for recordings, discovering their [...]
Quichenight I, the first album by Boston native Brett Rosenberg's band Quichenight, is an enjoyable mix of laid-back acoustic guitar strumming, keyboard harmonies, and quirky yet unpretentious lyrics in the vein of Scott McCaughey. Though the album was recorded "in a Nashville Tennessee basement", there is little of the traditional [...]
This DVD is about as good an introduction to the man and his music as one could ask for.
Another real new Fall album, Your Future Our Clutter, will be released on April 26 by Domino Records. It includes a cover of "Funnel of Love", a song that I blogged about here. A track-by-track description of YFOC is available at The Quietus. A vinyl single with a non-LP version of the song "Bury" will be released on Record Store Day.A Balloon Called Moaning, the 8 song EP by The Joy Formidable,

[ We are pleased to welcome to these electrical pages the reportage of Rock Piantigini, guitarist for the recently resuscitated (but now we believe doubly defunct) indie rock outfit Lump and all-around cool guy. Mr. Piantigini's schedule is full, his taste is impeccable, he is a great shot with a camera, and we are fortunate to have his help filling inches with a new column we are calling Rock Over Boston. As you can see below, Rock had a busy Friday night. -- Ed. ] With the humidity high and the weather threatening the Boston waterfront's [...]

Soul Asylum was in town here in Boston for Earthfest , a music/greening festival hosted by WBOS. With only a few hours of hard labor to put in on Saturday, Tommy Stinson (now on bass for SA) and Dave Pirner sandwiched in some play - and playing - at the Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain at the Figgs sold-out two-night stand. First night, Stinson got up on bass for a few Figgs songs, including the oui-c'est bon Hayes tune, "Je T'Adore." Second night, vid below, Stinson got up to do "My Generation," which [...]

When someone says,"rock 'n' roll", what's the first thing that comes to mind? After seeing as many of their shows as I have over the years, my answer is The Figgs . The band's returning to Wisconsin soon, but sadly, I'll be in Las Vegas. Depending up on when my flight returns, I might be able to catch the opening night of their return. :: crosses fingers :: Photo: Tim Ditzman The band are currently writing and recording their 10th album! With everyone going to or coming from CMJ in New York, the IA region has a ton of shows coming through the area. Not many multiple city stops to tell you about, but plenty of local and one-off shows. Toronto's Born Ruffians is one of the bands making multiple stops. They are on tour with fellow Canadians Plants & Animals . Friday, they take on DC at the Rock & Roll Hotel. For the remainder of the weekend, sBach joins the [...]

Be Sure to head on out to the M Room this coming Sunday for The Bag Of Songs 2nd Anniversary Party co- hosted by my friends from Girl About Town and with four amazing bands. The shimmering pop of The Swimmers ,the legendary Figgs , brand new music from Philadelphia's The Thirteen , and the funk soul workout of Joe Lewis And The Honeybears . It's going to be one hell of a party. The Swimmers - Pocketful Of Gold [...]

Stairway to power-pop heaven? Mike Gent of the Figgs told a story to us recently about how his Gentlemen bandmate Ed Valauskas had met Rick Rubin and mentioned being in a band with "Mike Gent, you know, of the Figgs." To my shock, Rubin's response was not, "Who?" But "Oh yeah, the Figgs. They were a good band." EdV: "Still are." For the uninitiated, Figgs are RIYL: The Kinks, The Replacements, Elvis Costello, The Plimsouls. Basically any sort of great power-pop. This one's a throwback to 3/22/01 at [...]
So maybe I would have known this earlier had I been able to make it up to New York a few weeks ago to see the band as planned, but The Figgs are apparently a 4-piece again. According to their website, Scott Janovitz has joined the band to play keyboards. If you caught Graham Parker on tour this past spring, you would have seen Scott then (along with Mike G. from the Figgs on drums). The newly
This is the first of several reminders about a GREAT show in New York this weekend. Don't pass this one up -- it's gonna kick your ass. And I'll even be making my way up from DC for this one, so if you see me, say hi and maybe I'll buy you a drink. The Figgs and The In Crowd One Night Only at The Cargo Cafe Saturday, December 15th 120 Bay St., Staten Island, NY [MAP] (718) 867-0539 The In
I was tickled when I found out the local 2008 show calendar would be kicking off with The Figgs . The Figgs have become rock n roll royalty in the Green Bay area over the years. The band are returning to Titletown to play four consecutive nights...how's that for feeling the love?! I'm going to twist as many arms as I can to attend this one! I've seen The Figgs more times than my memory is capable of retrieving and every show was [...]
The Figgs, "Jumping Again" (from 2006's Follow Jean Through the Sea) [BUY] So I've decided what I want to do when I grow up. I want to own a house with a decent-sized living room (or basement, or whatever) and throw a series of house concerts. Last night we were lucky enough to catch The Figgs - one of the best live bands around - at the home of a very nice couple named Jen and Dave just
dont know if you guys have been keeping up with the james kim story, but they did find his wife and daughters alive. apparently he went looking for help a couple of days ago but has not been heard from since. i have not been able to figure out what led to this situation but sounds pretty scary if you ask me. there is a press conference at 4.15 pst and you can watch it live on cnet . i get the feeling that this is not going to end well. sad stuff. in the meantime - i used to love helmet too [...]
This week's releases look to be a little slim, so I really had to dig around to find enough to actually compile the Graboid this week. Looking onward into December, I pretty much see a desert of crap so i'm not sure if i'll be continuing it throughout the end of the year. I'm looking into using it in a different way to finish off those weeks though, we'll see. Not to say there isn't anything completely interesting as there are some 'ok' releases to be had here. For instance, a nice two-disc live set [...]

Sometimes you just get really fed up with listening to gay indie crap and The Scissor Sisters and just have an urge to turn up your amp. Headband and generally annoy your sister across the hall. That's why I bring you Sunday NightLoud Stuff. Possible feature? Anyway "TURN THAT RACKET DOWN!!!" Love Ends Disaster! I've talked about these guys in previous posts. And possibly via the wonderful narcissistic stalker tool technorati . The guitarist Jon got in contact with me, [...]
