Before I get on with my usual reviews of new records, something caught my attention. The other night on The Daily Show , Foo Fighters performed 2 songs from their new album. Now, most people would see this and say one of two things: 1) Hey, a new Foo Fighters album? Awesome! Or 2) Foo Fighters ? Aren't those guys dead yet ? Then theres the crowd of people that wonder something else entirely: Nate Mendel's still with Foo Fighters ? I wonder what the other half of [...]
WARNING: non-metal below!!! One San Francisco Summer day in Los Angeles some eleventy years ago, this guy wandered into Amoeba Music in search of new sounds. Have you ever been to Amoeba? This "chain" of record stores (there are two in the Bay area and one in L.A.) seems to defy the impossible - it's [...]

Jeremy Enigk - Been Here Before "Those diamond days A thousand strands of sunlight in her eyes." I am not sure if I completely understand the meaning behind this tune, but it is so beautiful to me. I hadn't listened to Sunny Day Real Estate really, so I never knew of Jeremy Enigk 'til I heard this song, but it is genius to me. If you enjoyed that track, here are few others that might also tickle your fancy… The Fire Theft - Heaven [...]

Photography by ME ! Wow! What a fun week we've been having, eh??? Well... now it's my turn! I've been a busy mammer-jammer getting my mixtape together for our Cranes Day 2 1/2 going on down in the society , as well as keeping you inundated with all kinds of mixtape fun here, but considering I'm the one who beckoned for Mixtapes Week, I knew I had to put another one together for the occasion - an occasion that seemed to catch the attention of the local [...]

Whew, almost missed getting one in for July. I know I haven't done Mixeries every month, but I will *try* from now on. It's fun for me and I hope it's fun for you too. Per usual, an explanation: For those who don't know, this is iTunes Mixery part cinco. Here's how it goes: I play iTunes on shuffle -> tell you which song comes up -> provide the mp3 and a tidbit -> continue until five songs and embarrassment are complete. See my previous "mixeries" at the bottom of the post. Again, nothing's off-limits – I don't [...]
I feel awkward writing about Grizzly Bear's performance of "Cheerleader" right when I come to find out Billy Mays , the infomercial God , has died . Both Mays and Michael Jackson passed away at the young age of 50, add that to Farrah Fawcett and the tragic death of Dangerbird Record CEO Mike Castelaz's 6 year-old son, Pablo, and it's been one emotional weekend. However, nothing can raise the spirits quite like good music. While Phoenix played Kimmel on Friday night, Grizzly [...]

Throughout my college years I recall much noise about the band Sunny Day Real Estate from my peers, mostly peripheral noise, however, which put them firmly under the category of "bands I should check out but will probably never get around to." I knew enough to know that I was interested in hearing more, with a few songs breaking through that peripheral barrier by way of mixed tapes from friends. Put "Every Shining Time You Arrive" at the right spot in a mixed tape and amazing things can happen. Likewise, I remember hearing about [...]
It's impossible for me to hide my admiration for Jeremy Enigk . Sunny Day Real Estate was such a huge part of my youth and his solo material has helped me get through the hard times. So it was no surprise that I was extremely excited to hear him play Sunny Day songs as well as new material on his last spring tour. Jeremy has very quietly been working on his upcoming solo release and has stayed tight lipped about anything regarding his past project, The Fire Theft . So I guess we'll have to see [...]

The first weekend of Autumn is here. So I decided to construct a little 10 song mixtape for those of you that plan on taking a little walk through the woods to check out the foliage. These songs in particular represent the dreariness and slow change that Autumn brings. So strap on the headphones and let me know what you think... Autumn, My Dear - Full Download The Album Leaf - September Song [...]

It's an amazing day outside - I can't think of a better way to start the first full day of spring. Before I head outside to indulge in some frisbee golf/basketball/sand volleyball - I'm gonna send a rare b-side from one of my favorite bands your way. Despite my appreciation for all the music that Jeremy Enigk has created, Fire Theft takes the cake as my most cherished Enigk project. As the Enigk familiar know, Sunny Day Real Estate was "kind of a big deal" in the early 90s and helped paved the way for [...]
Sunny Day Real Estate was formed in 1993 from components of other bands in Seattle, Washington. At a time when the music industry was looking towards the dreary Northwest for grunge and alternative groups, Sunny Day seemed to fit the bill. Their melodic guitars, unintelligible lyrics, and tendency to name songs with numbers (see songs "8", "5/4", "47"...you get the idea) somehow missed the big fame wave that Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and others were riding, but the band had their own following. The original band consisted of Nate Mendel on bass, drummer William Goldsmith, and guitarist/singer [...]

I have sad news. My only surviving kitty, Udler , is very sick, and he's entering his last days. I wrote about him back in July, when he was still pretty healthy even if he did appear to have kitty alzheimer's. But now he's got a respiratory condition that's making it hard for him to breathe, and seeing as he is almost 20 years old, well, I think he's got a DNR order and I'm going to have to abide by it, if you know what I mean. [...]

This blog has moved - Update Your Bookmarks and Links. It's been ten years since Jeremy Enigk released his first solo album, "Return of the Frog Queen", so to say among fans of Enigk that the release of "World Waits" in two weeks is highly anticipated would be an understatement. The album has been gaining some very positive buzz due to the quality of the released tracks and the some great early reviews, but it seems that the album still has a biggest significance to long time fans [...]
