Although Saturday night is not a quiet time for many people, here's a song for those rare few who could really use an old-fashioned, doo-wop ballad right now. mp3: The Fleetwoods - Come Softly To Me

As the puddles begin to accumulate from the ground up with the long awaited spring thaw that's in full motion, I can't help but notice a certain "joie de vivre" in the air. Growing more and...
We are partial to a bit of the Mac at Love Machine , to put it mildly. Actually that's probably understating it a bit. We bloody love the Mac - 3 incredibly talented singers, 3 incredibly talented songwriters, a gurning giant on drums and a bass player playing the most simple but brilliant parts whilst wearing a flat cap. Obvs the golden albums of Rumours and Tango in the Night were the best, but we also love the more experimental Tusk, home of possibly their finest moment: [...]
"If you're not doing what you love you're wasting your time." -Billy Joel If I ruled the world I would require all forming bands to have their selected nom de musique's to be approved my me personally. If that was the process no music reviewer would ever have to feel ashamed when typing the word [...]

In a recent piece about Sixties pop star Vic Dana , I mentioned that he'd performed for a while as a fill-in for Gary Troxel of the Fleetwoods, but the group itself deserves a little more attention. Long before Vic Dana came along, the Fleetwoods had some hugely popular hits that not only topped pop charts, but crossed over to the R&B side too. It all started in the late Fifties, when Olympia, Washington, high-school friends Gretchen Christopher and Barbara Ellis formed a singing duo, and then decided to add fellow student and trumpeter Gary Troxel to [...]
The Fleetwoods - " Mr. Blue " I don't know about you, but sometimes when I am in the shower songs just pop into my head. Sometimes I know where they come from but most of the time I don't. The Fleetwoods formed in the late 1950's after Gary Troxel and Gretchen Christopher started singing together while waiting for mom to pick them up from school. They soon added Barbara Ellis to help fill out their sound. Originally called Two Girls and a Guy , they changed their name to reflect [...]

With drummer Rachel Blumberg (ex-Decemberists) on tour with Bright Eyes, and M. Ward (Norfolk and Western's "other" gig as backing band) off the road for the moment, the remaining members of Portland Indie Folksters Norfolk and Western used the downtime to go into the studio with Greg Olin (mastermind behind Portland's Graves ). Fleetwood's Hack is the culmination of those two weeks of recording sessions; a six-song collaboration tribute to 50's/60's DooWop Legends, The Fleetwoods . [...]
1959 The Fleetwoods, Come Softly To Me (A Cappella). The Fleetwoods, I Care So Much. The Fleetwoods, Mr. Blue (A Cappella). The flipside of teen rebellion: the sound of awful yearnings, quiet defeats, of a love always just out of reach. Greil Marcus, on The Fleetwoods' Greatest Hits. The Fleetwoods were Gretchen Christopher, Barbara Ellis and Gary Troxel: they had known each other since
