For an emo band, Cobra Starship have been fairly useless at making emo music. Their first big UK album release, 'Viva La Cobra', was a brilliant pop album, and their 'Good Girls Go Bad' single, from second album 'Hot Mess', was a massive chart hit. But their latest single, 'You Make Me Feel...' is going to be enormous. Huge. Planet sized. Massive. While the song would have been pop enough without any guest star, the band have hired in pop newcomer Sabi (fresh from Britney's 'Femme Fatale' masterpiece) to do a nice little chorus on the [...]

Christmas got funky, Christmas got soul! The analytical eagle-eyed reader may have deduced, by astute observation of the post's title, that this year's Christmas mix is dominated by soul music, and that there will be at least one more compilation. Indeed, there will be at least a second mix of Christmas soul tracks from the heyday of the genre – the 1960s and '70s. I have held back a few cracking numbers anyway. Still, this is a really great bunch of songs. Whoever I got the utterly gorgeous opening track from, I am particularly grateful to. The Flirtations, one of [...]

I'm still on a Funk & Soul kick- have been for most of the summer, and this week I've come back with a follow up to week 132s mixtape. Bonus: a few classics that I can't seem to live without lately. ATL: Mayer Hawthorne will be playing the Masquerade October 22nd- who's going with me? Tracklisting: Aretha Franklin - Chain of Fools Ben l'Oncle - Lise [...]

Ten days before Christmas and 10 days since my last post seems like a good mid-point and a good place to jump up on the holiday song bandwagon. I'm going to take it a little easier on myself this year than I did last year and post just a few random songs a day, every other day until Christmas Day. Then I'll do a massive Christmas song dump – haha, just kidding. I've picked up a couple of new things since last year, but for the most [...]

I woke up this morning with the song "Nothing but a Heartache" stuck in my head. It was puzzling because I couldn't remember when or where I last heard it. But the song stayed there, refusing to leave. I had to research a little to find who performed it; turns out it was a 60's girl group called the Flirtations. While I was looking this up, I saw a YouTube comment that had me laughing and nodding my head at the same time: "Once upon a time, they wouldn't let [...]

mp3: The Flirtations - Nothing But A Heartache mp3: The Flirtations - How Can You Tell Me? Another fine example of a song featuring dramas of the heart lyrics combined with a driving beat and uplifting orchestration (as touched on in the previous post). Originally released in 1968, Nothing But A Heartache was The Flirtations biggest tune. It became a Northern Soul favourite and was recently used in a KFC advert here in the UK -- nothing but a stomach ache would've been more apt.

This morning on Twitter , I asked people to submit their song to a mixtape to the theme: Songs to beat the Monday blues? Here are 22 songs handpicked to cheer you up on any given Monday. One of the bands picked, Local Natives play The Academy 2, Dublin tomorrow night. WE SHOULD ALL GO. I've a feeling it's going it be amazing. New Order - Blue Monday [ @GavinFeeney & [...]

This week, the Sunday EP and Retro Friday overlap—so I'm posting them on Saturday. Thanks to PC for the kind words in the last post! Say what you will, but I've been on a serious girl group kick the past few days. The following songs are primarily culled from two fantastic compilations—the single disc Girls! Girls! Next Tuesday, April 24th, The Detroit Cobras will release their new album Tied & True via Bloodshot Records. This is the first new Cobras release since Baby in 2005, and it once again features the sultry vocalist Rachel Nagy and her guitar-wielding cohort Mary Ramirez. On Tied & True they continue down their path of garage rock revivalism, this time around creating a true soul album full of engrossing recreations of forgotten songs from the past. Selections from Tied & True include original versions of "It's [...]
