They've taken away the Jeopardy question that was their original name — what is a Flying Tourbillon Orchestra? — but the band now known as Walking Sleep hasn't changed its approach: indie-pop with boy/girl vocals, sharp/fuzzy edges and a sunny/dark disposition. The sextet's debut album "Measures" will finally be out May 25; it's been a long time coming , but with Sara Radle now comfortably ensconced as the female vocalist (replacing original member Kelli Noftle), Walking Sleep seems to have hit its stride. ||| Download: "Final Chapter" [...]

[Happy new year, everybody. Buzz Bands was away on some vocab rehab for a couple of weeks, but now we return to help you lurch — did I say lurch? I meant ease — into a new decade. I hope to have some changes in the coming weeks; for now, get your year off to a good start by supporting some local folks:] News item: Few people on the Eastside would admit it, but the best lineup of shows this week comes at the Viper Room, which is [...]

[Birthday greetings go out today to Simon Le Bon ... and here's what's in store tonight:] Critics have heaped accolades on Sunset Rubdown's latest album "Dragonslayer," a labrynthian blast of image-heavy art-rock. The Montreal-based ensemble, led by Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug, ends the U.S. leg of its tour tonight at the Troubadour, where tUnE-YaRdS opens. ... Should be a fun night of dress-up (and cover) at the Echo — Otik Records presents the Voyeurs (as Creedence Clearwater Revival), the Flying [...]

[We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.] Haven't had a chance until now to tout the new Cave Singers' sophomore album, "Welcome Joy" [download below], a nice slice of laid-back folk that came out in August. The Seattle band hits the Echo tonight. ... Swedish quartet Sahara Hotnights kind of vanished from my radar after their 2004 album (a memorable tour with the Hives), but this year they released a new album "What If Leaving Is a Loving Thing" (produced by Bjorn Yttling of Peter [...]

[Here we are, Sunset Junction hangover and all, starting another great week of shows:] One of the most memorable sets last April at Coachella was Friendly Fires' early-afternoon assault in 100-degree (give or take) heat in the Gobi Tent. In fact, I'll venture to say it was almost superhuman — both on the part of the British four-piece and on the part of fans so packed in and overheated you were surprised not to walk away wearing part of your friend's tattoo. Their electrifying dance-rock was a hit in L.A. from the first time [...]
One of the best parts of the Circus was the success of the side stages, with some of Henry Clay People's favorite bands playing stripped down acoustic sets between main stage acts. By the end of the night, side stages were appearing out of thin air. I think I saw Eli Monolator (the night's emcee) start playing songs on a bench in the smoker's patio, but I was sharing a joint with a blogger and a singer from one of my fave local bands, and blogger weed is a lot stronger than mine, so I may have imagined that.

The Henry Clay People, Fol Chen, The Flying Tourbillion Orchestra @ The Echoplex ($10) The Henry Clay People return to Los Angeles TONIGHT and are putting on a full blown spectacle. The Rock N' Roll Summer Circus will feature Balloon animals, treats, Side shows, Mimes, and everyone is encouraged to dress up like a clown. Soo fucking excited. ALSO TONIGHT WORTH CHECKING OUT: [...]

Who knows when the Henry Clay People are going to have time to record a follow-up to "For Cheap or For Free" — besides upcoming tour dates with the Airborne Toxic Event and a date Aug. 7 at Lollapalooza , their name is on a list of local bands slated to play the Lobsterfest on Sept. 17-18-19 in San Pedro. No official announcement yet, but the names I hear for the shindig at the Port of Silver Lake — er, San Pedro — includes the Henry Clays, the Happy Hollows [...]
The Monolators are America's greatest midnight band, who always make it worth staying up all night. I look forward to their closing sets, because they play straight up, balls out garage-punk-pop better than anyone on the eastside OR the westside. I realized going into their set that there was a sixty-percent chance that my badly stubbed toe would be broken (it was) by the end of the night, with an even greater likelihood that one of the Monolators would destroy some equipment (they did). It's a real shame that they can't clone the Monolators seven or eight times so they [...]

[Getting back into town today after a little road trip. Thanks to my pinch-bloggers the past few days; happy birthday to Stewart Copeland; and here's a full plate of music goodies from which to sample tonight:] My trip to the heartland yielded a good read or two, including this Riverfront Times interview with Son Volt's Jay Farrar on his band's new album "American Central Dust." The quintet plays the Wiltern tonight with the Cowboy Junkies . ... The "Also I Like to Rock" free concert [...]

Jukebox is a feature where we ask our favorite artists, bloggers and DJs their opinions on four songs that are currently generating buzz. Then we ask them for songs that we should be buzzing about. [Twenty-seven years after the Grammys anointed her best new artist, Sheena Easton celebrates a milestone birthday today. Cheers to her as we rocket into the final week of the month ...] Yes, the Henry Clay People's residency at Spaceland this month has been raging, but they are not all the rage. Two other Monday night stints wind up tonight, and the lineup at the Silverlake Lounge is especially good: residents Dusty Rhodes and the River Band [pictured] play what is likely their last local [...]

[It's Jesse McCartney's 22nd birthday today. Is he still a big deal, or is 22 over the hill in that world? In keeping with that theme ...] "It's Spooky to Be Young" is the new album by L.A.
