It's incredible how many lovely covers of traditional holiday songs - Christmas and everything else under the sun - popped into our inbox this year. Just as family get-togethers, work potlucks and visions of sugarplums are traditions every December, so are the renditions of classics like "Frosty The Snowman" and "White Christmas" by underground talents [...]

Q.: With so many different formats of recorded music to choose from (mp3, vinyl, CD, AAC, FLAC, .WAV, .AIFF), how do I know which one sounds closest to what the artist originally intended? A: This question has been with us ever since recorded music became available in multiple formats. The answer requires a quick trip down memory lane, and a look at the dark art of mastering. First, the history: The first time multiple formats with differing sounds were seriously available to consumers was in the [...]
Fans of vinyl records probably are already very familiar with Record Store Day, which happens once a year and is like Christmas for collectors. But some might not be as familiar with Record Store Day's cousin, Black Friday. It's not only an opportunity to get out and buy some vinyl exclusives but also to support local businesses while so many others are swarming the malls and other big box retailers at the same time. If you want to shop local in Cincinnati, we recommend Shake It Records in Northside of course. Once again, [...]

fun. is a supergroup of sorts, featuring members of The Format, Steel Train, and Anathallo. While all three of these bands have had their share of success; these three members have decided to intertwine their styles into one concrete sound as a side project. "We Are Young" is the result, and it's gold. This is our first look at their upcoming, yet-to-be-named sophomore album; and it has me on the bandwagon. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and educate yourselves on Steel Train and The Format. The Format's "The First Single" dominated my library during my sophomore year of [...]

fun. know how to do things right. What else would you expect from a roster featuring members of the Format, Steel Train and Anathallo. The latest from the trio is "We Are Young," the first single off their yet-to-be-titled sophomore album. The track features a sweet but brief cameo from R&B songtress and Grammy nominee Janelle Monae . Strangely, though, this song is the closest the band has come to making a mainstream pop hit. Don't let the Aim and Ignite -esque intro fool you; once the chorus rolls around with its pounding [...]

In response to yesterday's piece on the end of portable minidiscs , @theealex responded: i still use my MD recorder very regularly - it's essential for field recording If I were you, Alex, I'd try and grab a spare. (Or a machine that uses flash memory?) This does remind me of a time, towards the end of the last decade, when I was doing a thing for a UK commercial radio station which meant lots of mutual-interviewing with other stations around Europe. We arrived in Prague, at a voluntary, part-time station, and settled [...]
Missed this a couple of weeks back: Sony have killed the MiniDisc walkman . I do have, somewhere, my entire minidisc collection - which was the covermount that Q magazine gave away back when the format first launched. I don't think there was anything on it - I seem to recall that there was a Wonka-style golden ticket thing going on whereby you were supposed to take the disc to a shop that sold the players, pop it in, and you might win a player of your own. And, on the plus side, you'd already have a [...]

Photography by Me ... Well my friends, the time has come. The break the rules and have some fun. It's been a nutty 4+ someodd years over here at tsururadio, we've gone through a lot of changes, did everything from mixtapes to vinyl rips, contests to out and out giveaways, we always tried to have fun and keep ourselves in check that we are just music bloggerin', like 4 kabillion other kids out there on the wide world interconnected super highway of love canals. But as [...]
