I was surprised by these guys. It's been since 2004 since their last release, Icarus . Icarus received good reviews from Pitchfork, and pretty good reviews from myself. It didn't wow me though. I'm more of a pop-rock than post-rock or math rock kinda guy. Their new self titled album recently released has definitely taken the band to another level. Produced by Steve Albini(Nirvana, The Pixies) and recorded for 50 pain filled days in Illinois, The Forms seem to really hit their stride on this one. The music is focused [...]
Monday: David Bazan + Old Podrida @ Mercury Lounge 7pm $12 At this point everyone knows who David Bazan is, he's the former member of Pedro the Lion that's gone solo, so let's talk a bit about Ola Podrida. Old Podrida is a band that popped up on the radar a few months ago and seem to have faded back a bit. This is of course complete rubbish as Ola Podrida deserve to be big blips on this radar thanks to their rocking sounds and the fact that they had Interpol's album art [...]

Four years between albums is an eternity, especially for a band that recorded with Steve Albini and got an 8.5 from Pitchfork. In today's world, they'd have re-released the record with a few b-sides and a cover and being living high of the blog-hog. But for the Brooklyn based band The Forms , things didn't quite play out like that. Instead of getting snapped up by a label hoping to convert their success into car commercials and MTV Subterranean spots, they are now going at this alone and you know what, I think it's [...]

[Photo Credit: Noah Kalina] Brooklyn group The Forms prove with their self-titled second album that great math rock will never die. The band will be crossing the country starting with a record release show in NY on Oct. 30th. October 30 – Cake Shop – New York, NY (Record Release party w/Patter Is Movement) November 1 – Lava Lounge – Pittsburgh, PA November 2 – Pearl Nightclub – Dayton, OH [...]

So, again, it's been awhile. Who cares, right? Fuck it. I'm gonna blog. I wonder if people use blogs for theraputic purposes. I'm not currently doing that, but I imagine it'd be effective. OK, maybe I am doing that. I just need to write something that isn't academic for like five minutes. So I decided to shout the best band whose music I was sent in the mail. That band happens to go by the name of the Forms . Like a lot of other indie rock bands right [...]
Sometimes I made a snap judgement over an album far too soon. That usually happens whenever I listen to music in my car, while driving in the city, with a passenger sitting next to me. There's always some kind of distractions that prevent me from devoting my ears to the music that...

The one time I attempted to see The Forms was ruined by rain and I swore I'd make a point of trying to see a full set by the band in the near future. That hasn't happened yet, and it's pretty terrible that I've not yet seen this band play a full/real set, but the future is still right in front of me. And with all of their upcoming October shows (man am I ticked I missed that recent show @ Cake Shop - but they are playing with The National again [...]
It's roughly 15 years since the release of Automatic for the People , one of R.E.M.'s best albums. mp3 blog Stereogum curated a tribute to the album, DriveXV to commemorate the occasion, featuring tracks from Sara of Tegan & Sara, Dappled Cities, the Wrens, Meat Puppets, and more. Here are a few of my favorites, as well as a link to the full album. All week this week, Stereogum is posting extra submissions that didn't make the cut as well. R.E.M. - "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite" [...]
Plan to add comments later today... + Kni9hts - Day of the Dove + Sunny Summer Day - Blue Light Pollution + Dog Day - Oh Dead Life + The Forms - Knowledge in Hand

Unter anderem dabei The Veils, Rough Wave, Shout out Louds und Meat Puppets. Tracklist [...]

I honestly feel like The Forms are a band specifically for me. At least that's how I feel when I listen to their music. And because of that they've managed to do something that over the past couple years has been unbelievably difficult to do and that is to make indie-rock seem interesting to me again. With so many bands that receive a ton of hype and press, there is a band like The Forms that is trying their absolute hardest to make something that is at the same time challenging [...]

Any regular surveyor of Stereogum should be familiar with New York indie rockers The Forms . I somehow managed to miss the initial buzz for 2003's Icarus myself, but after hearing about them a few months ago I've become totally hooked. What's even better is that I've recently enjoyed some sweet instant gratification from The Forms camp, as they are finally prepared to release their self-titled sophomore album next month. It's been over four and a half years since the Forms unveiled their Steve [...]

Since we've been in a Depeche sorta mode thanks to Hilary's (military) fatigued karaoke act , thought it'd be nice to round out the Gahan love with something more palatable. And just like that, out pops Division Day's take on "Enjoy The Silence," a continuation of DD's cover-full celebration of the Beartrap Island re-release. Last time the band tackled Sunny Day Real Estate and totally stripped the percussion; their move on "Enjoy" isn't quite so extreme, though the stomp 'n' slicing beat marks are held mostly to the hook's 1 and 3. Not bad, [...]

Well, looks like The Forms are back after a long recording hiatus. Stereogum dropped a new track last week, and now we've got another song from their upcoming self-titled album due 10/23/07. It was recorded by Steve Albini, and features more short, punchy songs rocking out in off-kilter time signatures. Check out "Red Gun" for some great vocal harmonies in 5!
Rilo Kiley's latest never leaked, but it did start streaming over at MySpace today. So fire up those blogging fingers. We haven't spent too much time with Blacklight just yet, but we hear some Rabbit Fur Coat in " Silver Lining ," some disco in "The Moneymaker," and a lotta Fleetwood Mac (in a good way) in "Dreamworld." The title track's hooky chorus is a highlight, but "15"'s satiric sleaze is not working. Take a listen for yourself. We're ready for you to shout out in the comments how much [...]
Tomorrow night in Manhattan at the South Street Sea Port, The National are going to be putting on their red shoes as they meet in the basement of Manhattan and put on a slow, dumbfounding show for you. Don't forget to linger and wallow in the squalor scenery. But this is nothing new as they've [...]
