Toadcast #225 – The Nightcast

Toadcast #225 – The Nightcast The Nightcast. Yes, night. I am recording this at about two in the morning for the simple reason that for all I aim to do these once a week, on the weekend, once again it has been just plain impossible to actually get the damn thing done on the weekend just gone, so here I am squeezing it into the ungodly hours of Tuesday night. Well, Wednesday now. And of course I am off to The Great Escape in the morning. Actually, it already is the morning. Oh all right then, by the time this is [...]

The Pictish Trail – Of Course You Exist

Scottish alt-folker The Pictish Trail (aka Johnny Lynch) will be releasing his second album, 'Secret Soundz Vol.22, later in the year. However, before all that, we have the Of Course You Exist EP, providing a glimpse into what we can expect from the forthcoming album. The oddball alt-folk sounds that make 'Of Course You Exist' are wonderful, warm and fuzzed up, with [...]

We've Got It Covered #96

We've Got It Covered #96 I am sure that most of you are already aware that the inaugural longlist for the Scottish Album of the Year Award was announced this week and I think it's safe to say that the list took quite a few people by surprise. To be honest with you I don't really know what I was expecting, but from the 20 albums that made the long list there are a few that I was genuinely surprise to see on there and a whole lot more that I had plain old never heard of. I guess it's the eclectic nature [...]

Airhead- "Wait" (Loved)

As the act of sampling music becomes more widely accepted, the artform is doing bigger and better things. From the straightforward and visceral mashups of Girl Talk to the mind-bending sound collages Oneohtrix Point Never laced into his latest album Replica . However, this new Airhead track shoots straight for the heart. I wouldn't say it's the first time for a track of this style to do so, though. Mashup artist Kids & Explosions had some tender spots on his debut album, but this "Wait" track is the closest sampled based music has come to [...]

Swedish filmjölk in Houston

Swedish filmjölk in Houston I was planning on making a post sxsw post here on my blog but I've just been so busy I haven't gotten around to it. We did eight shows at sxsw this year and getting to all the shows proved to be the hardest part. We hitch hiked, took the bus (if it came one) and managed to "catch a Chevy". Forget about taxis.. Last day both me and Jonas bought some really cool boots. I got a pair that was exactly like my old pair but in a different color and had my old boots repaired for [...]

Space City Rock!

Space City Rock! I missed out on my gig at the Super Happy Funland SXSW after party in Houston this week as my tour bus broke down in Austin, but Space City Rock blog did a really great write up for the gig. I hope people found out in time that I couldn't make it. I'm playing March 25th at Dun Bros Coffee in Katy, TX instead if you want to come and see my show. I'll admit to being somewhat biased towards Swedish musicians, these days; [...]

Ripping off artists

I just got contacted through my Sonic bids EPK by an organization called Bands With A Mission. They took on a personal approach by mentioning one of my songs, but I've gotten these kinds of emails before and soon got suspicious of their motive. After doing some research online I found this blog: http://samsongs.wordpress.com/ 2009/07/31/band-with-a-mission -not-a-chance / which confirmed all my suspicions. I think it's so mean when people try to profit on struggling bands and artists. It's like this online magazine called indie music reviews that I sent my album to for a review a [...]

WHAT'S YOUR MUSE? Bard & Mustache

WHAT'S YOUR MUSE? Bard & Mustache It's time for another edition of "What's Your Muse?" The concept is simple: We ask a band/artist to choose a song that means a lot/the most to them. Then, they record and send us a video of themselves describing why they chose the song. Think of it like a collaborative video mixtape project. In this edition, we hear from Bard & Mustache. Bard & Mustache Live Performance & Interview: A Real Valentine's Day Treat

Bard & Mustache Live Performance & Interview: A Real Valentine's Day Treat Greg Bortnichak and Erin Murphy are two of the finest human beings I've had the pleasure of meeting, part of the reason why their existence as Bard and Mustache is all the more special. Aside from being incredibly talented musicians and proponents, and torchbearers, of Sarasota's burgeoning music scene, Greg and Erin are a couple. There've been plenty of relationships in music throughout the ages that have resulted in some great duets/duos, but there's something particularly lovely about the bond between these two musicians -- something that thrives and reveals itself through their music. It seems only fitting that I've [...]

My culinary tour

If you've followed me on Facebook before you know that I enjoy cooking (understatement!) and like to post pictures of whatever food I make. In the RV it's a little bit more challenging to go on any culinary adventures. I try my best but work space is limited as well as cupboard space and having lived in this thing for about two months I'm not quite stocked up on spices and tools either. We're also on a budget whereas at home we almost never got around to eating those leftovers. But as someone said - musicians tend to [...]

FREENESS: Mark Aubert – Lost / Found

FREENESS: Mark Aubert – Lost / Found More of an update than anything really. I posted about Aubert's Lost / Found a few days ago, but at the time it was only available as a purchasable cassette; now it's been released as a free download and it really is worth getting. Apologies for the repetition but I do really like it that much. Check out our previous mentions of him here . DOWNLOAD/STREAM 'Lost / Found' FROM BANDCAMP HERE Mark Aubert: Tumblr • Facebook • [...]

Friday Freebies Butcher Boy If you sign up to Damaged Goods mailing list then they'll send you 11 free tracks, which includes a song from Glasgow outfit Butcher Boy's recent album Helping Hands. Field Music Arguably the most under-rated band in the UK at the moment, Field Music are a abnd who continue to just get better and better. They're soon going to release their new album Plumb, as a wee teaser they've posted up the track "A New Town" for free download on Stereogum . [...]
