On a well-trafficked corner, in the trendy, Cleveland neighborhood of Tremont, Loop has begun to carve its own niche in the city's vinyl scene, and art scene, and coffee scene. That's a lot of niches for a shop of its size. Often when I visit Loop, I get the feeling that the store's record business isn't exactly where the owners want it to be. When you step inside, you'll see what I mean. The cafe resides on the ground floor. On the walls, you'll see works by local creative types. All of the art is for [...]

*MP3: Foundry Field Recordings - "Warning Raids Over Kiev" Foundry Field Recordings played at the Nomad on the West Bank last night. They were awesome. Billy Schuh and members of Bald Eagle debuted a handful of new material that will see the light of day this summer. Here's one of my favorite all-time FFR songs and catch one of their shows if they're coming to you in the next two weeks. Tour Dates: 03/02 - Lawrence, KS @ Replay Lounge 03/03 - Denver, CO @ Hi-Dive 03/04 - Salt [...]

Bummer news this a.m.: Foundry Field Recordings have cancelled their Billiken Club show scheduled for tomorrow night, February 26. Don't worry, though -- the group is still at the Firebird on April 15... Continue reading "Foundry Field Recordings Cancels Billiken Club Show + Sold-Out Shows" >

Last month we mentioned that Foundry Field Recordings had drummed up a West coast tour for the spring, with a San Francisco date on March 10th at an undecided venue. Well, sadly, it appears that the band has instead opted to stake out the show in San Jose at Anno Domini Gallery. No real word on why the band decided not to make it all the way up the peninsula, but we have to admit we're a bit bummed. In the good news department, the band's tour kickoff post on myspace has [...]

We haven't heard much from Foundry Field Recordings since 2007's Fallout Stations EP , but judging from the band's touring schedule, it looks like things may be ramping up in the FFR camp. The band has scheduled an early Spring tour that includes the midwest, the west coast, and then a number of dates at South By Southwest. To be honest, in recent months the band has really fallen off of our radar, mainly due to inactivity. That being said, we've supremely enjoyed everything they've put out, and seeing that the band hasn't [...]

Local label Collective Records has been rather quiet in the recent past, but on Wednesday sent out a MySpace bulletin announcing its return from the dead. This includes posting some new pictures and a new/old song from sludgy post-rockers In Medias Res . The eclectic label also promises some exciting things in 2009 (which I'll write more on once I find out what they are!). Collective Records alums and current artists include indie dreamers Foundry Field Recordings, post-punk throttlers Bald Eagle, post-rock experimentalists the Conformists and Warhammer 48K, and electro-punks Femme Fatality, along [...]
I don't want people to start hating Gentleman Auction House because I post about 'em so much, but you know what? In recent weeks. Alphabet Graveyard -- its debut full-length -- debuted at an impressive #77 on the CMJ charts. Plus, the band's appearance at Oklahoma's DFest was quite a success, or so I hear. ( ASIDE: Other St. Louis bands who were at DFest -- looking at you, the Feed and the Maxtone 4 in particular -- chime in and tell me how your sets went.) [...]

The contrast podcast theme this week is "Cities" and it's a great choice by JC . Almost too great! I had tons of wonderful songs to pick from, which, as you know, always makes it hard for me to make a decision. I finally decided to stop thinking so much and go with my heart, which led me to choose "We're From Barcelona" by I'm From Barcelona , basically because it compels me to sing along. There's [...]

My roommate is going on a road trip today to Bayfield, Wisconsin to explore the amazing world of all things apples at Apple Fest 2007. No joke. In fact, it sounds beyond epic. Just try to imagine all of the cool things one could do with an apple and apple-ish things and triple it, twice; you've got Apple Fest my friend. So, in honor of this road trip, I put together a mix of songs that make me think about apples. Yeah, there are some that do. Furthermore, they are songs that I think accurately represent the playful, [...]

The last day of Pygmalion Fest had by far the most diverse and awesome line-up of the weekend. If you haven't been keeping track, Pygmalion is not only a Levantite vegetation god and an album by Slowdive, but a midwest festival that's modeled after SXSW (bands play at numerous venues in downtown Champaign/Urbana over the course of a few days). The first band of the night was an acoustic gathering at Café Paradiso to see a solo Mike Kinsella, formerly of American Football and currently of Owen . Although [...]

Foundry Field Recordings are a one of those midwestern bands (Columbia, Missouri) that survive not on being a part of a certain east coast/west coast scene or style, but by taking influences from a variety of artists and creating something they're proud of, something unique. The influences for FFR range from the Pixies and Built to Spill to Wilco and Broken Social Scene. They are more experimental and in general, noisier than most pop bands you will find, but the distortion never takes a way from the melodies. The band is playing on Saturday of the Pygmalion Music Festival [...]
Fallout Stations EP has five great songs that are nearly lost in extraneous "experimental" noise.

DOWNLOAD: The Foundry Field Recordings - Transistor Kids (MP3) The Foundry Field Recordings have a new EP out called Fallout Stations - "It's the companion CD to their recent Full-length Prompts/Miscues ". One of the songs off the EP is available for download above, and the band is currently on tour supporting it. This week they play three shows in NYC. The first is tonight (August 2) at Union Hall in Park Slope. Tomorrow is at the [...]
