The Monkees' Davy Jones has passed away today at the age of 66, but it's never too early to remember what made Jones and the band so big in the first place — their infinitely catchy, free-spirited songs . Many artists throughout the years - from the Four Tops to acts like Run DMC and even Susan Boyle - have flipped through The Monkees' songbook and put their spin on their pop classics. Celebrate Davy's contribution to music by listening to some major stars perform covers of The Monkees' biggest hits below. [...]

I've lived in Pittsburgh for almost eight years now, and it's a decision that I can honestly say I've never regretted. I love this city. I love its crazy roads, obscene colloquialisms (Jag Off!), awesome food and legendary record stores. I also love its cinematic history, mostly because it's so weird. Sure, we got George A. Romero's zombie flicks to lay claim too, but the greater Pittsburgh also played hosts to classics like The Deer Hunter and Flashdance , as well as "classics" such as Sudden Death, Striking Distance and Stigmata. [...]

Phil RetroSpector – Don't Mo [ mp3 ] Yazoo – Don't Go Four Tops – Standing In The Shadows Of Love Yazoo go Tamla…. and Phil is still a genius

D.a.N.'s "Don't Stop" mashup runs through quite a few samples with ease, but at times feels off. One listen I'll be feeling it all the way through, while another I'll catch a few transitions that sound more like two songs than a harmonious one. D.a.N.'s biggest strength is his diversity in sounds, but at the same time that makes it all the more tricky to get just right. There's a lot of potential here, but keeping it all fluid & flowing well will be D.a.N.'s biggest challenge. D.a.N. - Don't Stop [...]

Filed under: News , R.I.P. YouTube George Rountree Jr., the musical leader of the Four Tops , passed away this Sunday at a Las Vegas Hospital, reports the Las Vegas Sun . He was 61. Though not a performing member of the famed vocal quartet, Rountree was a lynchpin behind-the-scenes associate and performed a host of roles including musical director, arranger, composer, trumpeter and keyboardist. Rountree, also known as [...]
'Making Mirrors' is the third studio album by Melbourne act Gotye, released in August. Gotye (pronounced gore-ti-yeah) is really one-man wonder Wally De Backer, armed with a sampler and the kind of home studio set up any musician would kill for. When he's not drumming for indie rock trio The Basics, De Backer builds catchy songs [...]

I was going to post another mix today, but when one of your favourite songwriters dies, priorities take over. And much as I love Jerry Leiber's repository of great lyrics – he was he Cole Porter of rock & roll – my tribute is for Nickolas Ashford, who with his wife Valerie Simpson wrote, produced and recorded over their career of five decades some of the finest soul music. They deserve a lifetime achievement award alone for that string of wonderful songs they wrote and produced for Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell: Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing, [...]

13/There used to be a record shop in Manchester called Power Cuts that had a big annual sale, selling vinyl cut outs from the US for next to nothing - stuff like Bummed by The Happy Mondays, Mistrial by Lou Reed (probably not worth 50p), a Hank Williams Jr album, a pressing of the Sally Cinnamon single by The Stone Roses on Revolver Records (10p), and Testing Positive 4 The Funk, the fourth in George Clinton's Family Series of compilation albums. The album is hit and miss but it does contain To Care by The Four Tops from [...]

The second SAVED! compilation gets righteous on your asses with a churchful of glorious '70s soul – and it does so without going for the easy option of all those Stevie Wonder songs about God being a zillion lightyears away with whom you should have a talk (and did George Michael realise that he was singing a song of praise to God when he had a hit with Mary J Blige?). While neither Stevie, Aretha nor Marvin feature here, Al Green does, though with a song that precedes his lesser Reverend Green phase. And, of course, Curtis Mayfield [...]

I recently raided several Columbus, Ohio Half Price Book locations, systematically plucking out all of the best vinyl records from their inventories. In all, I probably took 15-20 records back with me to California. My bounty included Aretha Franklin's Live at the Fillmore , Portishead's Dummy , The Supremes' Anthology , The Ventures' Walk Don't Run , The Beach Boys' Endless Summer , and The Four Tops' Greatest Hits , in addition to records by David Bowie, The Temptations, Al Hirt, Louis Armstrong, and others. And amongst all of those great finds, [...]

Welcome to another Lazy Sunday, this long weekend shout-out goes to the classic Motown quartet, the Four Tops . I was digging through the 'rents record crate the other day and came across the 'Second Album' from this groovy doo-wop/jazz/soul/R&B quartet and was instantly hooked to their infectiously uplifting music. The founding group members Levi Stubbs, Lawrence Payton, Abdul Fakir and Renaldo Benson first sang together in 1954 in Detroit, largely considered the home of Mowtown music. The first few releases from the group received little commercial success, until they teamed [...]
Red Band is the best Israeli puppet cover band you've never heard of, with covers of M.I.A., The Doors, The Animals, The Four Tops, Van Morrison, and many more.
30 Day Song Challenge: Day Two - A Song That Makes Me Happy.
Just got our hands on a massive treasure trove of Ultra-Rare clips from French TV. Might be a good time to subscribe to our YouTube Channel .
The Four Tops - Reach Out (I'll Be There) The day of love ended a few minutes ago. Following this day of cards, chocolates, flowers, the busiest restaurant and jewelry purchasing day of the year, and other tokens of adoration, was a music award ceremony. At the results of the performances and awards, some were happy, some sad, some surprised. The usual. Some good tumblr's have arisen as a result of the show and its outcome as well as this day too! I'm just glad to be here, and glad for what I have! This classic track, and [...]

Behold, the perfect live recording. It's 1966 at the Roostertail in Detroit. The Motor City. The house is packed, the room is electric with anticipation. Same Old Song (Live) - The Four Tops, LIVE!, 1966 At their best, live albums manage to catch an act at their peak and at audience at their most adoring. The group sing-a-long in the last 30 seconds of this track is one of my favorite moments on the record. Baby, I need [...]
I've been digging around recently, and I found some real nuggets of joy from the golden days. We spawn of the 902s know The Four Tops for their Johnny Rocket's jam "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honeybunch)," but "Baby I Need Your Loving" goes down a lot smoother. You can hear where Mayer Hawthorne [...]
