Five years ago I moved out of the San Francisco Bay Area for the snowy, crisp mountains of Colorado. I absolutely love my adopted home, our vibrant music scene, and the fresh air here, but no foolin' I do often long for my hometown hills. Over the holidays I went to San Francisco for a week to stay at the Noe Valley apartment of friends who were out of town and graciously let me "housesit." It was a part of town I had never stayed in before. When I first let myself into their empty place on [...]

Halloween 2009 has come and gone, leaving us with hangovers, rotten teeth, and memories of our favorite acts giving their best attempts to live up to the holiday spirit. What follows are some of our favorite examples of the latter, though unfortunately, no Kanye West costumes were included: Weezer = Insects Matt & Kim = Andy Warhol & Edie Sedgewick Monsters of Folk = KISS Vampire Weekend = "I won a $200 shopping spree at express [...]

Ending a week of Green Day albums with some quasi-Green Day that offers a sharp left turn from what anyone expected. For all their faults, and they certainly have faults, Green Day know how to keep their fans chomping at the bit. In case you were completely ignorant to the realm of popular music last year, about a year ago a MySpace page and official website went live for a band called The Foxboro Hot Tubs. They were a punk rock band that had a sound that threw back to the era of '60s garage rock, with jangly [...]

117. The Rascals 'Rascalize' (Deltasonic) – If it wasn't for Mr Turner… 116. Adam Green 'Sixes And Sevens' (Rough Trade) – Too expansive, otherwise this would work a charm. 115. Lupe Fiasco 'The Cool' (Atlantic) – Rappers also need to figure out how to shorten their records. 114. These New Puritans 'Beat Pyramind' (Domino) – Again. Less would be more! 113. The Ting Tings 'We Started Nothing' (Columbia) – First half discomfiting. Second half hype-justifying. [...]

Slowly, but surely. That seems to be the motto of Green Day these days. Since captivating all of us "American Idiots" back in 2004 (yeah, it's been that long!) and the subsequent gathering of "idiots" all around this "Idiot Nation" (yeah, that was intentional), Billy Joe and Co. have spent the last couple years doing a bit of "talk, but not much walk." As far back as last year, Green Day has been discussing the follow up to American Idiot . In fact, this day last year, Armstrong [...]
Q: Where can one find brilliant music videos? A: GQ.com, of course. ...though I must admit, I'd rather see the shoot in which Summer Glau, as my favorite Terminator ever, displayed her mettle as she pulled the exploded Jeep shrapnel out of the back of her head. Now, there's a woman. Cheers to the GQ Music Editor Guy, whoever you are. We all want your job. Megan Fox + Black Lips ' Veni, Vidi, Vici (mp3) (from Good Bad [...]

I raised all of you better than this. Here is all the wrongness which you allowed to happen during my recent sabbatical: 1. You encouraged Leslie Hall to channel her inner Roches (but at least she possesses a much better fashion sense). 2. You catipulted Santogold into the charts simply for emulating M.I.A. when, in reality, she is also [...]

I associate summer and driving quite heavily and frequently make a summer CD mix for the sole purpose of driving around with the windows down and the stereo turned up. I didn't make one this year, partly because I'm also car-less this year for the first time in more than a decade (eep!), but here's a few of my favourites. Rebel Girl - Bikini Kill The trash-can sound of the drums in this song is so awesome, and then there's Kathleen Hanna belting it out over top. So [...]

1 - Stop Drop and Roll ( mp3 ) 2 - Mother Mary ( mp3 ) 3 - Ruby [...]

New this week are a few we're quite scared of and a few we're really looking forward to. With a light week of artists to talk about, and summer buzz building for those albums in the near future, let's get right to this. The Futureheads' This Is Not A World is about as indie rock as it gets in the UK. They will be a sure favorite for us this week. I Love Math (who doesn't?) are another pleasant group if you're into [...]

...Green Day gets tired of working on the same routine, combines forces with three other like-minded fellows, goes completely 60's, assumes the name Foxboro Hot Tubs, and releases the album Stop Drop and Roll!!! . They played it cool and booked a gig at Emo's indoor last week, one that had people waiting in line at 2 a.m. to be part of an intimate crowd of 300. At least one reviewer made it into the show and had this to say: "A lot's been made of the Hot Tubs' '60s revival sound on record, but [...]

Foxboro Hot Tubs is a side project of the members of Green Day. It is rumoured that, to give space to the enormous amount of material produced by Green day (more than 30 tracks recorded in few months). Rumours also speculate that Green Day are using these side projects to separate the different sounds they've been working on, and grouping them in genre categories. There you go... Green Day with a different name, a new album and new tunes, sweet! The record is titled Stop Drop and Roll!!! and you can find [...]

Alrighty- I've been feeling a bit refreshed this week after an extended weekend beach getaway to the Gulf Coast last week (except for yesterday, and I've only got myself to blame for that). But the shortened week also left me a little bit behind in my musical quest for new schtuff. Thanks to Aubriane and 5andman for your comments, I only hope I can stand up to such high standards- which is why I chose not to include any Alanis Morissette on this week's mixtape. What I do have is a blend of new, slighty less [...]

Back when material from Foxboro Hot Tubs began appearing on the internet (for free on their website) I told you about it , making the suggestion that the vocalist sounded quite a bit like Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong. Welp, big surprise when a couple months later the members of Green Day admitted to being the aforementioned Foxboro Hot Tubs. Why all the secrecy and pseudonyms? The answer is pretty simple. Foxboro Hot Tubs play a different style of music than Green Day does, and this is a project the band should be able to do without the pressure [...]

Here's what's new and worth your time this week: Dandy Warhols, ...Earth To The Dandy Warhols... The newly label-less Dandys are trying something new for the release of ...Earth , their eighth full-length. It's due in stores this September, but if you're a fan who just can't wait, enroll in their "ETTDW subscription service." For $35, you'll get a download of ...Earth right away in high-quality MP3 form, the physical disc sent to you upon release, a [...]
I've been doing my band of the week piece for quite a while now and have profiled a ton of bands in doing it, but it isn't very often that I know nothing of a band's history when I write about them but that's the case with Foxboro Hot Tubs. I have no idea where this brand new band came from, all I know is that their album landed on my lap this week and I just can't stop listening to. There's
