We're probably all familiar with Brian Eno's famous quote "...the first Velvet Underground album only sold 10000 copies, but everyone who bought it formed a band." That quote becomes increasingly cliched as time rolls on and the album's sales figures rise with each passing decade, but the point still stands that the influence of The...

Back when I started doing these mixes every month, I saw it as a manageable way to keep recommending music without the effort that it takes to do a researched, singular writeup. It seemed to me that picking out 10 random songs wouldn't be all that hard - I always have new things that I'm listening to, as well as my entire musical upbringing to highlight. A part of the experienced mixtaper in me was never satisfied with these as "mixes." For one, there is only so much you can do in 10 songs... they really seemed more like [...]

[It ain't Radiohead — which raised over half a million dollars at its Haiti relief benefit on Sunday night at the Fonda — but here's tonight abbreviated show menu:] It'll be their last SoCal appearance before Coachella — San Francisco quartet Girls [pictured in August at the El Rey Theatre], still getting all kinds of love for their creatively titled debut "Album," play the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. ... Just 10 months after the release of its sophomore album "Good Friends Only I Can See," L.A. five-piece the French Semester returned in December with a new EP, "Forces Afield." That makes two EPs and two full-lengths in two years, so give them points for productivity, anyway. The quintet's understated but engaging folk-pop seems to be reaching for the urbane bite of the Go-Betweens (or the whimsy of '90s U.K. act Hefner; anybody remember them?). And while too often the French Semester settles for less, singer-guitarist Riaz Tejani at least carries on a dialogue without coming off as [...]

[Happy new year, everybody. Buzz Bands was away on some vocab rehab for a couple of weeks, but now we return to help you lurch — did I say lurch? I meant ease — into a new decade. I hope to have some changes in the coming weeks; for now, get your year off to a good start by supporting some local folks:] News item: Few people on the Eastside would admit it, but the best lineup of shows this week comes at the Viper Room, which is [...]

Harlem - "Friendly Ghost" ; At this point we can't get by on "South of France" alone, we need more of the catchy, lo-fi punk Harlem is cranking out and thankfully they give us an almost equally addictive track as the lead single from their upcoming album Hippies . This tune bursts into your brain with that addictive little guitar riff and the shout-a-long chorus. Before long you will be singing this without even realizing it, and the people on the subway will be slowly inching away from you as you do. Grade : [...]

The 88 have begun work on the follow-up to its third album "Not Only ... But Also," which helped get them picked up by Island Records last year. There are few finer purveyors of power-pop around, and the L.A. quartet this month is doing something of a return to its roots — a Tuesday night residency at Spaceland, starting tonight with Daniel Brummel and the French Semester on the bill. They promise old songs, new song and some surprises. You never know with these guys; currently on their MySpace page, there's a song they recorded [...]

[Folks, today is 07/08/09, and maybe a numerologist could explain it to me, but I remember have a distinctly crappy 06/07/08 and 05/06/07. So I might not get out of bed today, even to wish Beck a happy 39th birthday.] The acclaimed Brooklyn avant-pop group Dirty Projectors hit town tonight behind their new release "Bitte Orca," which has an eccentric beauty to go along with its rather stubborn penchant for outsmarting itself. The sextet visits the Troubadour, supported by What's Up [Download: "Harper" ]. ... [...]

[It's Kanye West's birthday, and I wonder what you'd get a guy who has his own line of limited-edition glow-in-the-dark sneakers .] Can't think of another album from this year that has been a more slam-dunk mood elevator that Metric's "Fantasies." The Canadian-bred band, who seem to have had more homes that an Army brat (they were even an L.A. "local" band for a while), hit the Wiltern tonight, and I know I've posted two videos already from the album, so I will [...]

Jukebox is a feature where we ask our favorite artists, bloggers and DJs their opinions on four songs that are currently generating buzz. Then we ask them for songs that we should be buzzing about. This week, we put quarters in the record machine with Riaz of The French Semester ... A quick preface: our comments here reflect a thinking that 1). lyrics are paramount and 2). subtlety is the root of intensity. This doesn't mean perfect pitch and performance matter so much, it just means heavy thought goes into words and [...]

The French Semester have one more LA show scheduled before embarking on an international tour that will taken them to France, Spain and Germany. + Birds and Batteries have a pretty sweet offer for you : "Hey.
