Oooh it was set to be a good night, even on paper. Steve Gunn - Kurt Vile's buddy and extra Violator on this tour - filled an early, early set with layered, rich indie-blues - haven't heard a lot of that, these days. And none so good. Guitar and voice gave a dusty hug to the muttering crowd. Then San Francisco's Fresh & Onlys arrived, lookin' like each of them - singer/guitarist Tim Cohen, guitarist Wymond Miles, bassist Shayde Sartin and drummer Kyle Gibson - belonged in different [...]

Along with Ty Segall, Tim Cohen and the boys are representing the City to the fullest.

I've been getting into several new albums of late, and when that happens, I often want to play several songs from the same band on my radio show. I restrained myself, narrowing it down to a pair each; that's the theme of tonight's show - doubles. I'll be playing back-to-back tracks from each artist I play tonight, including new stuff by The Besnard Lakes, Wolf People, King Tuff, and Arrington de Dionyso's Malaikat dan Singa. We begin, however, with a band I originally covered way back in 2010: Young Hunting. Regarding [...]

Kurt Vile took the stage Tuesday night at the jam-packed Echoplex looking as if he just walked out of his "Never Run Away" video — maybe his all-white persona is here to stay. As he did at Coachella , Vile delivered his songs from beneath his voluminous hair, keeping it low-key and letting the music, rather than the guitarist himself, connect with the audience. His backing band the Violators ebbed on and off the stage throughout the night, giving Vile a chance to also show off some of his acoustic versions of his hits. When left [...]

Indie darling of the moment Kurt Vile will be playing a sold-out show at The Independent this Wednesday, May 8. The Philadelphia native is currently promoting his latest album, Wakin On A Pretty Daze , which has quickly become a critics' favorite since its release early last month. Stylistically, the new album shows Vile’s subtle growth as a songwriter, with changes that are small compared to his previous record, 20102s Smoke Ring For My Halo . Vile's voice is still mumbly and smooth, and still thickly sweet, and his lyrics haven't strayed [...]

[That's Vile's video for "Never Run Away" above.] San Francisco's the Fresh & Onlys and New York's Steve Gunn round out the bill. ► Folk singer-songwriter Laura Stevenson plays upstairs at the Echo in support of her newly-released album 'Wheel." May is looking almost as crazy as April on the show front. And this time there isn't a Coachella to blame it on. You just need to blame it on how awesome the bay area is! Now, got do some rocking. Or Else... I picked up a new toy a few hours before my show. My bike had been in the shop for a few days with a broken spoke and to get a new chain and cassette (the latter of which was a special order item), and I decided to try out a 2012 model Trek. Ended up using my old bike as a trade in and coming home with the new ride pictured above. With this kind of reckless spending, I needed a garage/psychedelic rock kind of night. Here's my playlist for [...]

Berkeley "emotional singer" Safe released a 7-inch vinyl single along with a remastered version of his debut EP last week on Greedhead Music . Safe, aka CF Edley, was once the artistic director for MGMT , so you know he's going to drop some emotional videos for his emotional songs. The video for "Black Satin Living Room" was directed by Brandon Tauszik , who also directed Antwon's outstanding "Living Every Dream" video . A video for "Treason", which is a bonus track on his EP release, follows. Safe will be [...]

I received a message from Stuarto requesting I cover his show in the late afternoon hours of Friday, March 8. After a minute or two to think about it, I agreed. In all the times I've covered for his show over the past year and a half, I have never done a show that gives a nod to his show, which often features more mainstream music including a handful of tunes from the 60s and 70s. For March 8, I decided this needed to change. I pieced together quite the show for the first two [...]

Photos by Lauren Espina This week's Noise Pop 2013 festivities continued at Bottom of the Hill on Wednesday night with toe-tapping performances from San Francisco garage rockers Burnt Ones and The Fresh & Onlys , plus San Diego's Plateaus and D.I.Y. legend R. Stevie Moore . Each of the four bands is a quartet, providing for a well-rounded rock show. Burnt Ones warmed up the stage with an impressive rock 'n' roll [...]

Hello Petey Dammit. I am Mikala Taylor. From Vancouver, currently in Toronto, saw you live in San Francisco last year, and I look forward to hanging out with you in Primavera Sound in Barcelona this year. Can I buy you a drink in Spain and if so, what would you like? Hello Mikala , thank you very much for offering me a drink. I reckon I would like a beer, a cheap watery one. I'm drinking for the marathon, not the race, haha. [...]

Words by Brendan It's (roughly) that time when we look back and analyze the past year, identify our favorite things. I say "roughly" because, well, some people do these kinds of things in December, but that seems premature. We took a little while, relaxed, let the feeling of 2012 pass through us, and now here we are. (Okay, we had a lot of work to catch up on, and were just a little lazy, too. What of it?) I [...]
