When we were investigating some local bands for our SXSW bookings this year, we came across a great record called Space Punk Starlet from The Frontier Brothers . While the band have called Austin home since 2006, they have quite an interesting mythology. You see, the Dallas Observer have already called them "the love children of Randy Newman and Stephen Malkmus", but it goes farther than that. Much farther in fact, as they claim to be from a planet over "700 billion light years away" in our interview where every band sounds like U2. [...]

Thanks again to all the bands that came into LA last night from places beyond to take part in the party. THE RUMBLE: LA had more bands in attendance than people I think - we saw PORTUGAL THE MAN, BLACKMARKET, Casey from DJANGO JAMES & THE MIDNIGHT SQUIRES, FILM SCHOOL, THE ANSWERING MACHINE, and LOVELIKEFIRE just to name a few. Thanks again for Ryan Suffern for taking photos, here are a few... Fresno's RADEMACHER doing their Talking Heads [...]

I know I once again flaked on posting, but I've had a cold for the past couple of weeks that just doesn't know when to leave. Kind of like the creepy, wasted guy at the afterparty who can't seem to catch a hint. I'm feeling quite well today, so I took advantage of the better health and spent pretty much this entire day catching up on email and snail mail submissions. And to make up for my delay, today's post is going to be a massive one. I hate to say that I won't be able to give [...]

Space-rock saviors The Frontier Brothers will be taking their otherworldly sound across the United States this fall, with dates everywhere from Oklahoma to California, and more to be announced. Born in space and raised in Texas, the Frontier Brothers synthesize an original blend of psychedelia, 60s pop and punk aesthetic, which is masterfully exemplified on their debut album, 'Space Punk Starlet' . 'Space Punk Starlet' traverses all manner of song: Bacharach-like piano-driven pop ("Take it For Love"), spastic rockers ("Ego Protection") and country-style love ballads ("Plastic Bag") - all underneath a science-fiction sheen. [...]

Bonus mp3: The Frontier Brothers -- "Space Punk Starlet" After you've listened to it a time or twelve, just try to resist buying the CD.-- Jesse Hughey

Once upon a time there was a great mythology to the world of music. Bowie and Black Sabbath, Styx and Queen, each held in their songwriting quivers arrows of myth and wonder. Today the tradition continues on here and there, though largely in comical form (Tenacious D). It is a joy then to find a new band out there, in their infancy, creating their own mythos and forming a new universe for themselves. Austin's The Frontier Brothers are doing just that. Comprised of two brothers, Marshall Galactic (guitars, vocals) and Travis Newman [...]
