When you come across a tune that you can't escape you've got to just sit down and applaud the efforts of the artists; that's exactly what I did when I listened to this first track from the latest EP, titled Fumes , from Portland's Grandparents . There's sort of a far-out approach to the craftsmanship of the group's pop efforts, something that makes their songs always seem to rise and fall with the changes of the wind. Hopefully you get the same sentimental drifting emotion that came to mind when [...]

"Golden Isles" new off Portland band Grandparents' FUMES is GREAT. Sure it's a little bit derivative (see if you can pick some of the influences out yourself.) but any of that derivative-ness (derivaty?) is of things we really like. It's jangly, but it's also sort of surreal sounding, it's poppy (there are some excellent melodies from chorus to verse) but it's also dark. Get familiar below. Mel B is reportedly at war with Victoria Beckham amid accusations she wouldn't give her any of her designer dresses to wear on her reality show It's A Scary World. The former Spice Girls are said to have fallen out after Victoria said she could not accommodate Mel's request. A source told the Sunday Mirror: "Victoria would have lent her outfits if she could have done but she just didn't have anything. The samples were not the right size for Mel's curves and the sizes she needed were not in stock. Mel seemed to take offence that she didn't pull [...]
Those of you who know me know that I loooove me some gritty blues-rock, so I was quite pleased to discover The Fumes in my inbox today. These Aussies really know how to rock and I just can't resist moving to their sexy blues riffs. It just so happens that they will be in NY for the next week or so, and I think I may find myself out dancing to their grooves in person. Dates below: 08/26 -

Attention all American blues-rock duos. Australia's The Fumes are on their way and throwing down the gauntlet. Meg and Jack. Dan and Patrick. Consider yourselves warned. These guys bring the ruckus, falling on the heavy scale somewhere comfortably between Black Diamond Heavies and Black Cobra. After stints on the road in support of Queens of The Stone Age, Clutch and Calexico, guitarist Stephen Merry and percussionist Joel Battersby are ready to make a grab for the belt as they step up to support of their debut U.S. release, Guns Of [...]
this week's cutie is the story of the neverending line Rogue River Woman by The Fumes directed by Paul Murphy

Of course, it goes without saying that part of the joy of these multi-day music shindigs is unearthing new and exciting artists by accident. With so much talent on show, however, it's important to anticipate the artists that are expected to be highlights to ensure nothing gets missed. With a solid schedule having built up over the past week - a good proportion of which will hopefully be caught personally and recorded [...]

A somewhat schizophrenic musical week, covering anything from alt-indie through late 90's British hardcore to contemporary electronica, prompted me to summarise the week in tracks. I'll try to do this most Sundays where possible, as it gives an opportunity to post some lesser-known stuff without getting bogged down in the back story (my main delay on posting....spiralling descent detail distraction). So here are some of the tunes that have rocked my week. If anyone does want more info, I can always whack it into a comment reply......... [...]
