Niamh Sambo announced the support bands for Whelans; they are Dundalks Blind Pilots and The Funeral Suits who impressed big time at this years HWCHs. Here's Ham Sandwich from Podge & Rodge show nearly two years ago making a Rod Stewart tune sound good. Remember that The Funeral Suits were chosen by this blog as one of the bands to watch out for this year! We also chose Aortal who broke up but hey you win some you lose some! [...]

Day three of the great gourmet gig shindig, but there are sad signs of festival fatigue at large. The crowds seem to have dwindled and buzz isn't quite what it was on Friday and Saturday – hopefully this is more to do with it being a school night than any comment on the festival itself. For those of us still hungry to forage in the venues for something new and thrilling, there's still plenty to see. Beginning in what State has to say has been the pick of the venues this weekend, Twisted Pepper, we find [...]
For the last night despite my desire to see bands like Funeral Suits, Super Extra Bonus Party and Ham Sandwich I decided to stay in The Button Factory for the last night of HWCHs. Pearse McGloughlan Pearse was accompanied by Sean Lynch on Mandolin and played a great set of songs from his debut album 'Busy Whisper'. It was a small but appreciative audience for Pearse's music. Ultan Conlon Ultan and his band of excellent musicians played a brilliant set from [...]

This weekend is an immense weekend for Irish music in terms of the future. As we all know we can only have good independent music festivals if they have the ability to make money. Here's hoping all four festivals this weekend breaks even and continues into the future! Le Cheile - Oldcastle, Meath July 31st - Aug 2nd. There's a free gig on the Sunday featuring Funeral Suits and Neosupervital amongst many others that I'm looking forward to. I also got tickets to Heritage Centre and Ian Whitty for [...]

So ..... you get a night out, three artists and a free album for just €10? Fair play to the Van Cleef lads! Blog tip for the top band The Funeral Suits are gigging this Friday in the Academy 2 with New Amusement in support. Here's their excellent single Black Lemonade: [...]
This Friday, the 15th, (following up from last Friday's excellent launch gig by Subplots, the more I listen to Nightcycles the more impressed I am with just how accomplished it is. I only caught the final 3 songs of Panda Kopanda's opening set but that did include probably the best cover of Ultravox's "Vienna" ever. I'd definately like to see them make their way down from Belfast and into the Free State more often, I think the last time they were here I was in a band and on they bill with them nearly 3 years [...]
And so the end is near and we face the final curtain of the IMRO Showcase Tour 2009. Having kicked off nearly a month ago at the Sugar Club in Dublin, thirty seven of the country's brightest new talents have played live at venues across Ireland. It would be tempting to say that the final line-up at A.L.T. in Dublin this Friday 24th is perhaps the strongest of the whole jaunt, featuring as it does two of our Faces of 2009. So for one last time, here's who to look out for... Heathers [...]
Of all the IRMO gigs announced during the week this has to be the best line-up. Highly recommended! Here's the story ..... €75 for the three gigs, Mark Geary, Mark Dignam and Brendan O'Shea all with tasty special unconfirmed guests and camping. You also have access to the beautiful surroundings of Conary, Co. Wicklow as well as a program of holistic events on the Saturday and Sunday. All sounds great to me! I'm off to buy a tent! [...]
...... written in hope an hour before the Ireland rugby match! Here comes the good times for Wallis Bird who is gigging in Austin at the minute on the back of her nomination by the Irish public as 'Hope for 2009' at the Meteor Awards. Catch Wallis live in Whelans in July. Find full Meteor results here! ****I'm thinking of changing the weekly features on the blog. You might see soon 'Friday I'm In Love' and 'Sunday's Summer Song' coming to [...]
The Funeral Suits are on the way to superstardom with some great news that they will be warming up the crowds at the Franz Ferdinand gigs: "Next weekend you will be able to see us with your own eyes playing with Green Lights Upstairs in Whelan's on Friday and then we're playing main support to Franz Ferdinand for there three Irish gigs in Limerick, Dublin and Belfast." Remember these guys were one of our 10 picks for the year....... here I promised myself not to even mention the 4 local lads from the northside of [...]
This post represents blog co-operation at it's best. Ronan over at Swear I'm Not Paul and myself have been working on creating a list of 10 Irish acts who we believe will make considerable progress towards world domination in the coming 12 months. Ronan picked five acts and I picked five acts ready to dominate your music world in 2009. Aortal Aortal are a three piece power alternative rock band with an amazing vocalist. Their MySpace with 20,000 plus friends describes the band as " ..... a Dublin three piece fronted [...]
This post represents blog co-operation at it's best. Peter over at 2 U I Bestow and myself have been working on creating a list of 10 Irish acts who we believe will make considerable progress towards world domination in the coming 12 months. Each of us picked 5 acts. Think of this as the Irish version of Sound of 2009. And don't complain when we constantly say "I told you so" throughout the year! Aortal Aortal are a three piece power alternative rock band [...]

..... Why Don't I? End of year lists on the blogsphere are interesting and fun. Firstly I have not heard every Irish release this year. Nor have I seen every gig by an Irish artist. So this list is made with a limited small amount of albums heard and gigs attended. Irish Album of the Year 1. Pony Club – Post Romantic 2. One Day International - Blackbird 3. The Gorgeous Colours – Self-titled It was a great year for Irish album releases. I have enjoyed the albums by Jape, [...]

Choices galour for the last big Friday before the Christmas present buying rush! There's the gig above with two of Ireland's most promising acts. Declan O'Rourke is pleasuring many in the Olympia. I'm from Barcelona are in the Acadamy and Ireland's adopted son Josh Ritter is in Vicar Street. Oh and new pop teen stars Iglu and Hartly are in Whelans! I'm stuck bringing my Mother to a community Christmas party! Have a great Friday if you are going to any of the above!
New Indie Irish music this week for the Ruby Tuesday feature, "The Funeral suits are three nerds who found each other on the internet. Sickened and terminally bored of generic indie bands that had taken over the music scene the three conspired to form a band so that they could write some songs that would make their friends smile. The joining of these three young men from Dublin and Limerick resulted in a melodramatic popular sound which has been heard in various poky clubs all over Ireland. Three sets of very empty pockets had meant that the funeral suits had [...]
