The Funk League - Funky As Usual Favorite Recordings: 2012 Most groups, duos, combos, trios, or other assorted musical entities don't want to be pigeonholed. But with a name like The Funk League, there really can't be any question as to what the group will sound like and what the music will do. There can be no mystery and there will be no deception. It will be funky and you will have to fucking deal with it. The French production duo deliver nothing but straight-up funky goodness on their debut, which strangely [...]

One of my favorite releases thus far in 2012 is Funky As Usual , a new LP from the Paris production duo The Funk League. The two French producers, both avid record collectors and music heads, put the LP together over three years, and brought in some of underground Hip Hop's most storied emcees in Sadat X, Large Professor, Buff 1, and more. It was their love of Hip Hop culture, break beats, and rare grooves that brought the two together and also what won them respect of heads worldwide. Via email, I talked to [...]
The Funk League does boom-bap well, and deviations from that template show that the Funk League have some other tricks hidden up their sleeves. The Funk League is mainly a league of two with a rotating group of helpers: Hugo and the Soulbrother Suspect are the Parisian collaborators who produced Funky As Usual. The boom-bap combination of bass and snare drums, hitting loud and out in front of everything, appears everywhere on the record. Thin horn lines flit in and out, and funk and disco guitars occasionally augment the groove. The intention of the Funk League is to "keep...

Hey turd burglars. Today's our stupid birthday. 4 freaking years of posting inane tripe and awesome music. In blog years that's like infinity x infinity +1.

If I lied and claimed that this is an artifact excavated from a dusty crate sealed since 1994, you would not know the difference. Really. Since I'm reasonably honest, the truth is that the 45 was released this year on French-imprint Favorite Recordings . The Funk League are flaneurs too, content to carouse amidst the booming systems and burnt grass of scarcely remembered Brooklyn block parties. To its credit, hip-hop has largely been a progressively-minded art form. But just as groups like The Fresh & Only's and The Mantles [...]

Despite being one WTFuckery summer; beating us over with lashings of heat, humidity, and precipitation... I've not found it to have a stride for me. Nor a voice to bring it into context. Of course it makes sense, confrontations never go well. Though the sailing winds have been blowing us around the lake quite well, no release; WTFuckery indeed. All known be told, the lack of snow this past winter has only increased my appetite. Of course staring at 2 new snowboards ( Kass C2BTX & Illuminati Evolver (Thanks Lance!)) and the idea of a highback-less [...]
