Pioneers of ambient electronica and IDM, The Future Sound of London (aka Brian Dougans and Garry Cobain) have just announced the release of the fourth installment of the Environments series. While previous volumes collected archive productions with smatterings of unreleased material, it seems Volume 4 of the series will be the closest they've come to a new album of original material for a very long time. The beats are few and far between, but their absence is more than made up for with beautifully atmospheric soundscapes that evoke industrial wastelands, dystopian futures [...]

The past five years has seen a huge amount of brilliant unreleased Future Sound of London material made available through the "From The Archives" and "Environments" series. The latest in the latter has just arrived and expectations were high due to the bar set by previous outings. The Future Sound of London - Sun Sets As usual there's the quality blend of otherworldly atmospherics, insteresting instrumentation, floaty ambience and the odd beat driven interlude that marks this as another must have for fans of FSOL and [...]

While the likes of "Good Life" and "Big Fun" always pop up when people talk about Inner City classics, for me it was the slightly later early 90s material that sent my boat a-floating. Tunes like "Hallelujah" and "Praise" were firm favourites on my turntables and still are to this day. This period also saw them drafting in some of electronic music's finest on remix duties, the most notable of which is this phenomenal Future Sound of London remix, released in 1992 . At 15 minutes long, it's not for [...]
I've been annoyed by something over the past few weeks, and I've continually debated with myself if it's something I wanted to bring up on this blog. But since I'm posting a video game soundtrack tonight, I figure that's enough of an excuse for me to go on a video game related rant of sorts. Fucking Mass Effect 3 . If you at all follow gaming news, you know what I'm going to talk about now. If not, a quick summary. Mass Effect 3 is a video game made by [...]

Future Sound of London - Lifeforms (1994) Christ, where do you even start with this? A landmark album, even by the standards of the day, which means you can only really elect to advocate the entire work as essential listening. Layer upon layer of beats and noises, rhythms and speeds, urban and rural, animal and human and so much more, this is a huge canvas that feels as if it's capturing all the sounds of life, a blending of natural and man-made, creating an unpredictable yet seductive atmosphere that seeps [...]

Stakker started life as a graphics company that would end up as a collaborative project when video makers Mark McClean and Colin Scott teamed up with Brian Dougans . The trio's work eventually morphed into the rave classic we know today. Sampling video game Berzerk, this tunes was probably played at every rave between its release in 1988 until well into the 902s and still pops up in sets today. Although the project didn't last long, Dougans would later go onto form seminal electronic act Future Sound Of London . Get those robots shined up [...]

According to The Quietus , former Oasis guitarist and mastermind Noel Gallagher will release his self-titled debut, Noel Gallagher and the High Flying Birds , on October 17th. A second disc is also reportedly "in the can" and is a collaboration with Amorphous Androgynous (Future Sound of London). Gallagher's new albums also feature drummer Jeremy Stacey, keyboard player Mikey Rowe, Becky Byrne, pedal steel guitarist Jon Graboff, percussionist Luis [...]

One of the inspirations for this blog was audio.out , probably the greatest dance music blog I've ever come across. And in stx, as I've said before, the only person's record collection I've ever truely envied. His blog may be somewhat sporadic these days but ever so often it comes up with a gem. And in this rare remix by FSOL of Stereo MCs big hit, he's done it again. Makes a post from me this morning feel somewhat redundant. So, go here and download: http://globalvariables.net/aud io.out/?p=22
I've been trying to find this for nigh on 15 years since I first heard about it, released in limited quantities on French promo vinyl and I've only ever seen it listed twice anywhere with >100€ prices. A couple of months ago the GEMM monitor which usually turns up all manner of unrelated spam* had one listed in France with an unusual cat number, but no description. Figuring it was worth the 8€ gamble to someone that spoke only French & money, I find myself in possession of something I didn't think I would actually ever hear. Anyway, [...]

Tweet If you've been reading my reviews before today you'll know that I'm into experimentation. If you haven't then just where the hell have you been? I love the ability of some artists to take sounds that most of us would just dismiss as noise and put them together in a way that not only fits but also produces tunes that we can hum along to. Occasionally they even create something we can dance (or approximate a form of dance) to. This guy is one of [...]

The 20jazzfunkgreats Interstella class cruiser is currently trapped in a solipsistic nebula that isolates it from terrestrial communications. That doesn't daunt us, if it was the human limelight we craved, we would have chosen another line of business. We project audio-sonar pulses into the unknown, and wait for a reaction from the powers that are known to dwell in this area of The Beyond. The possibilities range from untold riches to eternal enslavement, tried-and-tested snippets from the theory of everything, to catatonic oblivion. Grim expectation, beads of sweat swirl in zero G. Then a [...]
I'm getting a new turntable Tuesday! It's a brand new Audio-Technica AT-LP120. I've heard very good things about this turntable, it's direct-drive; comes with both a USB and traditional ports; has a built-in pre-amp; and even looks suspiciously like a Techincs 1200. Hopefully, it doesn't suck. Expect a full report later this week. Until then, I'm not recording much vinyl. Why bother recording on my shit ION USB turntable when I know a better one is on the way? Luckily, I have some stuff saved up. Such as this acid trip of a single. [...]

This week's Lazy Sunday post sees us hand over to my favourite electronic music production team of all time - The Future Sound of London . We're taking a wee trip back to December 1993 when the duo took over the Essential Mix on Radio 1 and delivered two hours of ambience, electronica and IDM. Stream the mix below or pick it up over at The Podroom for 3 quid. FSOL - Earthbeat Studio Session Pt.1, Essential Mix - BBC Radio 1 1993-12-04 [...]

The silly season is in full swing, with Christmas rapidly approaching along with all the excess boozing and merriment that is part and parcel of this festive time of year. It's not all roses, though. December can be a tough time for music snobs, with good releases few and far between as labels go for the king hit by pumping out naff compilations. That's What I Call R&B 62? Wigga please. And if that's not bad enough, there's also the added peril of the [...]
I was trying to work on a Halloween themed mix, using songs with titles such as Fear, Scare, Monster, Ghost, et al. but work demands meant I haven't really been able to spend any time on it until earlier this week, and by then no-one wants to hear Kid Koala - Tricks'n'Treats for 350 days so it fell by the wayside. Instead, find below a classic house mix I was working on, but didn't really finish but need to get out of my system. I had two versions of this ongoing, but didn't find any satisfaction with either [...]

There's joyous news for a hope-starved world as Burger King is introducing a glorious buffet of new breakfast items - pancakes, muffins, ciabatta club sandwiches...pancakes. I just know it's all going to be flame-broiled and life-altering. And the restaurant already offers the Croissan'Wich which trumps all other possible breakfast sandwiches if only because the egg, cheese, and breakfast meat rests delicately on the buttery, flakey brilliance that is a croissant. I don't usually spend so much time pondering fast food. I usually eat it less than a few times a month. [...]
