I have to thank my daughter for keeping me on my toes when it comes to some recent music trends. I don't know if I would have missed certain "new" genres or not if I hadn't had her around. A few years ago when she was 15 to 17 she and her friends were into the emo bands like Jimmy Eat World , Dashboard Confessional and Brand New (new album out, I hear). Although I think I had Dashboard Confessional's Swiss Army Romance in my discard pile before she had even heard of [...]
I think I may have just about reached the stage where I have found the limit - that exact point where too much of a good thing resides. Hot Club de Paris sit very definitely in a little cluster of indie bands who purvey a particularly spasmodic, jerky, hyperactive brand of guitar pop. These other groups range from the very melodic Maximo Park at one end, through the increasingly melodic Futureheads all the way down to the staccato shouting of the first Art Brut album. Having just read a really good post on [...]

Okay, now that I'm back in the groove of things, here's the next list: 29) Xela – The Dead Sea - This is one of the most impressive ambient/electronic records I've come across this year—and for many, many reasons. John Xela builds layers after layers of noise, chords, and subtle musicality that tests ourselves as listeners. Throughout all the scrambles of notes and rhythms, Xela seems to maintain his focus remarkably well; the songs are pristine, sound, and effective. [ buy ] [ MP3: [...]

Just a few songs I threw together to commemorate the single best and worst days in some people's professional careers: The Office X-Mas Party. A social conundrum that haunts even the smartest Einsteins in the room. Great Party! Ignore the hated office loser or talk to the troll? Should I hit on the coworker who I think is cute and single? Shake hands or an end [...]

I wish I had the kind of editorial staff to have more detailed write-ups for each of these songs, but I simply don't have enough time! It's been a competitive year for singles - I originally wanted to have only a Top 20, but found myself unable to whittle down the list. So, we're stuck with 40! Check back tomorrow for part 2 (songs #20 - #1) of our feature, followed by Let's Sexy Fighting's top albums of the year on Friday! Top 40 Singles: 40. Film School - [...]

Just when you thought it was safe to peek out from under that veneer of hipsterdom and express your own opinions, I'm giving your favorite bands (and your girlfriend's titties) . . . FOUR THUMBS DOWN! That's right music fiends, not only are the Lakers going to win the NBA Championship this year, but
I graduated from college at age 26, and now I'll have more time to dedicate to things like writing on a blog that nobody reads. Here are my favorite songs of 2006 (not in order) HOT TRACKS OF 2006: TV ON THE RADIO-"WOLF LIKE ME" MP3 CAMERA OBSCURA "LOYD I'M READY TO BE HEARTBROKEN" MP3 THE THERMALS "HERES YOUR FUTURE" MP3 COLD WAR KIDS "WE USED TO VACATION" MP3 [...]

Apparently, the second Futureheads album was a flop - although I suppose it depends on what you were expecting it do. But certainly, the band felt it underperformed , says Barry Hyde: "We were disappointed with what happened with our second album. "We were absolutely ecstatic when we made it. We thought everyone was going to like it and that everyone would just accept the change and the progression. "But it seems people weren't expecting it. They expected it to be a lot higher tempo and not as melancholic, as some [...]

I don't know about the rest of you, but where I'm from Guitar Hero is absolutely massive. The second edition came out last week and everyone on my dorm floor has been playing it nonstop. If you've never played before, I'm not going to go into the details, but basically you pick up a plastic guitar and use hand eye coordination and rhythm skills to rock out to songs like "Ziggy Stardust", "Freebird" and "Sweet Child of Mine." (Read tons more about it here ). Pretty awesome, even you're not into classic rock or metal [...]

It's almost October, time for Halloween decorations, Ocktoberfest, and of course my favorite play on the name Rock-tober! I don't know where or when Rock-tober started, all I know is that it does in fact carry on to this day. This month features a ton of highly anticipated releases, and more good shows than I can shake a stick at. I'm going to highlight the shows I'm most looking forward to seeing this month, though I don't think I'll be able to afford to go to too many of them (sigh). These aren't all the shows coming this month, so [...]

forget about the baby tracks 145 were more bowie covers; m. ward and the futureheads covering "let's dance." both versions convey exactly the same mood and emotional experience. track 146 was the cure covering "young americans." i take exception to the decision to change the lyrics from "do you remember/president nixon" to "do you remember/president clinton." track 147 was

Well, school started for me this week, and it's kind of sad. Summer is ending, and soon it will get cold and all that jazz... Luckily we still have summery music. So, here it is, a marvellously hand-picked, hand-ordered mix of some summery music to keep y'all going. Some are indie blog concensus picks, like Beirut's "Postcards from Italy." Others are from upcoming releases, like the selections from the Rapture , Decemberists , and Hold Steady . Mr. Loco's "Religious Man" was the theme song to Nacho Libre , and "Noah's Arkestra" [...]
I always expected it to be, you know, a crocodile that eventually did him in. Or at least an extraordinarily venomous snake that he deemed "a real beauty" as it swung menacingly from his out-stretched arm. Actually, fuck all that. As much as it seemed like the inevitable and obvious outcome of his profession, none of us really expected Steve Irwin, TV's Crocodile Hunter, to actually be killed by one of the incredibly dangerous animals he chose to associate with. He was the unexplainable exception. Harry Houdini. Evil Knievil. That one-in-a-million dare devil [...]
So in addition to the first day of classes, today will be my first day working at CD Central here in Lexington. I'm pretty pumped because, to quote The Futureheads, "this is the job that people die for." Here's hoping I don't screw it up! MP3: The Futureheads - First Day MP3: ...
