April 20, 2011 If The Futureheads had got their heads together before tonight’s Japanese Tsunami Relief Benefit show and attempted to sketch out the ideal set of circumstances in which to extract optimum charitable goodwill, they would probably have struggled to come up with a better scenario than that which we actually encounter tonight. The seemingly endless supply of bank holidays stretched languidly in front of us has dovetailed beautifully with the unexpected delight of the first proper sunshine of the year, making Ouseburn Valley a pretty fucking happy place. Throw in a stellar supporting cast [...]
Today my son Elias turns 2. Kind of unbelievable how fast time flies. He is pure happiness all the time and has changed my life completely (in a good way of course). Over the past few weeks... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

As with all the best ideas, Playfest started out as a late night conversation over a few drinks by a circle of friends who were events organisers. The past few months have seen it evolve very quickly into an exciting new player on the festival front. Having been involved in some meetings with the organisers, I'm pleased to say that BIYL will be getting involved with both full scale coverage pre-festival and also during the festival. As if that was not enough to make you want to rush out and buy a ticketm I have also been [...]

Let’s state the obvious first: Rebecca Black’s Friday does not represent an acme moment in the annals of popular music. I am even inclined to agree with those who suggest the song is quite awful, especially in its excess of autotuning. It sounds like the theme song for a particularly hyperactive Japanese game show. My remaining days will not be diminished by the absence of Friday on my iPod. But those people with whom I’m inclined to agree are not the target audience, many of whom dislike the song as well. Black’s target audience has a crush on [...]

Frank Yang For the first few years of their existence, the British Sea Power live experience had a reputation as something of a spectacle, thanks to their habit of decorating the stage with local foliage and then-keyboardist Eamon Hamilton's on-stage shenanigans - both of which were in full effect the last time I saw them play a regular-type show in Toronto, way back in May 2005 . Both times I've seen them since then - a SxSW day show and television taping - weren't necessarily conducive to indulging in madness [...]
If we didn't all love music then we wouldn't be here, but often overlooked are the videos that accompany the music, and even more overlooked are the directors and producers who put their time and effort and money into making them, which is why I've started Le Garage. Before I get into the details, let me explain the name. Le Garage is the name of the first track on the debut album by The Futureheads, and it's one of my favourite songs of theirs, but I also wanted a name that might denote something homegrown, organic, and unseen, [...]

Think of North East music and which artists come to mind? Maximo Park? The Futureheads? Kubichek? All good artists in their own right, yet there's an underlying feeling with all of them, that when it came to jumping the final hurdle and shooting themselves towards the festival headlining slots, they all hit the proverbial stumbling block. After earlier this week meeting up with the new troubadours of North East music, Athletes In Paris, it's clear these guys are determined not to slip up anywhere alone their way to stardom. From their electric live performances, to their rock and roll swagger, [...]

James Blake, The Futureheads and Frightened Rabbit have all been added to the line-up for this year's Live At Leeds Festival. If you haven't cottoned on, it's a three day festival featuring both music and arts, with the three bands joining the likes of Anna Calvi, Pulled Apart By Horses, Young Knives and The Duke Spirit at the event.
![[Introducing] – Aerials Up](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3184643_lg.jpg)
Go on Scotland, go do your thing (I know Frank is all about the homeland); as he should be, especially with good music coming out of it like Aerials Up. Aerials Up is an outfit from Glasgow, making some serious noise this past year. This is a good one, a seven piecer with a wide range of instruments coming together to make melodically intricate but with a simply beautiful sound. With a few notches in their musical belt, they've been associated and played with huge names like Snow Patrol, The Futureheads , Doves , Ash, and Paulo Nutini [...]
Some people will go "Woooo!" to anything at a concert. No matter what show I'm at, there's always a portion of the crowd who came there seemingly just for the chance to yell "Woooo!" at every opportunity without facing the consequences that would normally accompany yelling "Woooo!" in, say, a crowded subway car . I don't even think they know or care who's playing. Case in point is this here Futureheads' concert I attended last summer. The Futureheads are a very chatty bunch on stage, engaging the crowd in extended banter in between every song. Pretty [...]

Ah, the desolate wasteland of January. What else is there to do other than go to work, hunker down, listen to music, read a few books, knit a few rows ... do it all again. I find January quite a dark month, however, I’m expecting my team to cheer me up this Sunday. This may, of course, be misplaced optimism. After Halloween’s tawdry performance, I expect nothing else than a thrashing for the bar codes down the road, otherwise I might have to stay inside and take up needlepoint. I need a big win. There’s honour and local [...]

Photo: PJ Sykes I was intrigued by Lubec because they recorded their debut EP on a tobacco farm. Now, I don’t know about you, but I find that to be pretty freaking awesome. Even more awesome, though, are the tunes found on the EP. Lubec’s music is, according to them, what would be considered as “sculpt-rock”. I’m not exactly sure what that means, but what I do know is that they are making some awfully catchy and addicting tunes. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, the 4-piece is gearing up to release that EP, "Nothing Is Enough!", on [...]
