The second installment in my tribute to late Seeds frontman Sky Saxon has been a bumpy one thus far. I'm listening to World Fantastic , credited to Sky "Sunlight" Saxon and Fire Wall (two words, no shit), and it's now apparent to me that absolutely NO ONE escaped the wrath of the 1980s, not even Saxon. World Fantastic isn't bad, just rough in that way only '80s records were: Tons of synths tossed up front like a greasy mechanic's rag [...]
Lets start the campaign early this year, abolish the company Christmas party and help stamp out the embarrassing annual works get together. Last year we tried a gig a day during December on more of a local level, obviously some of the shows below are slightly further afield so we`ll thankfully rely on our international friends to rock those venues. Support live music, go along to a show and maybe buy a T-Shirt, it`s the way forward and surely giving more power and control to artists is an added bonus. 1st Dec... [...]
I was trying to make some sense of my records (yeah, right) & was thinking along the alphabet lines, as I kinda have things by genre now & that's getting worse than 26 symbols. I just grabbed a record (I had just posted Rockabilly Psychosis...& was in that group). The slab I grabbed was The Fuzztones Leave Your Mind at Home live ep from 1984. Then I started looking through all the categories for other "F" bands & realized I had a lot of great "F" musick that I wanted to share. That's about as far [...]
The Sonics are rightfully considered to be one of the earliest bands on the family tree of punk due to their wild and unconventional style with bloodcurdling screams, neanderthal drumming and heavily distorted guitar. The lyrics of The Sonics' original material dealt with early '60s teenage culture; cars, guitars, surfing, and girls alongside darker subject matter such as drinking strychnine for kicks, witches, psychopaths, and Satan. They combined classic Northwest-area garage band raunch (see the first Nuggets compilation to hear other bands in this style such as Sam The [...]
The Green Slime are coming, and they cares not for your subject-verb agreement rules, pitiful humans! This is where I’m supposed to extol, in true cult cinema dilettante fashion, the virtues of Kinji Fukusaku’s 1968 film, The Green Slime , and justify its role as an influential cinematic landmark. You know what, though? I’m not feeling it. It’s a cheapjack sci-fi horror film with an American cast (with many off-duty servicemen serving as extras), involving big chinned guys fighting silly rubber monsters on a space station that makes the original Enterprise set look like something from [...]
Sky Saxon audio obituary, Part 2: Sky "Sunlight" Saxon and Fire Wall - World Fantastic [Skyclad Records, 1980]

THE SONICS: WE MIGHT TRY TO BLOW PEOPLE'S HEADS OFF
The Sonics weren't pioneers so much as cavemen—the first humans to discover tools, fire and the absolute rudiments of chemistry. Their original '60s songs still sound wild and feral today, and their debut Here Are The Sonics! devours most of the million punk rock records that timidly followed it. This will be their first Los Angeles-area show ever. This interview by Dan Collins.

Il nome dei Fuzztones e di mr.Protrudi è ancora simbolo della rinascita del garage punk degli anni ottanta e anche in questi set italiani ci sarà da divertirsi con la loro carica on stage. Beach Bums at Beer Island
I spent the better part of Saturday hanging in the Beer Island in Coney Island. I was checking out the Siren Fest. The bar entrance had two things that made it a great spot: 1- a perfect side view of the second stage 2- a hose hooked up and spraying a fine mist of cool water (it was in the mid-90s) Here is a run down of my "indie" afternoon. Film School lived up to my expectations. After that it was off to the congested main stage for The Dodos. I found a nice spot in [...]
