submitted by Deena Better late than never, right? Here are my thoughts on What We Do Is Secret, which debuted in theaters August 8, and the Germs/Darby Crash story in general... The movie centers around five years in the short life of Darby Crash, notorious frontman for The Germs, a band thought to have pioneered the hardcore punk genre. It stars Shane West, Bijou Phillips, Rick Gonzalez and Noah Segan, and [...]

The Germs biopic What We Do Is Secret had its premiere at The Nuart last Friday and to celebrate, the surviving Germs played their first show at The Echo Saturday night since the very first show with actor Shane West as frontman. Aside from a national tour and many L.A. shows, the Germs have just recently played the Warped Tour and even made an appearance at Sunset Junction. Since I've seen them a few times before, and can highly recommend the movie, I knew The Echo show was going to be [...]

What We Do Is Secret is the new movie about Darby Crash - the legendary frontman of the LA punk band, The Germs . Though Crash and The Germs are worthy of a film in their own right, there's a good chance much of today's musical youth has better knowledge of the band's guitarist, Pat Smear for he's a sometimes Foo Fighter . The movie spans the 5 years between 1975 when Crash first started the band and ending with his untimely [...]
Every piece of press on this film says it's going to be just like "Control". Somehow I don't agree though I haven't watched Control yet because I pretty much hate biopics but even more so, I hate biopics about musicians with the exception of "La Bamba" and "Sid & Nancy". Darby Crash of The Germs The "Germs" [...]

I am by no means an expert on The Germs; in fact, I'm not even really a fan. To be honest, I just never sought them out, nor heard of them til a few years back, but at the same time, I was intrigued by a biopic made about them, Rodger Grossman's What We Do Is Secret . I suppose that being an avid music fan generally makes me interested in any film about music, and punk as a cultural/sociological phenomenon has interested me for years. All I knew going in to see the film last week at Cinematheque [...]

Last night I was fortunate enough to catch an advance screening of What We Do Is Secret , a forthcoming biopic centered around legendary LA based punk act, The Germs. The film stars Shane West & Bijou Phillips amongst others. While the acting was, at times, imperfect, the movie portrayed the late '70s scene and its star players beautifully. Additionally, Shane's vocals are shockingly, yet eerily similar to those of former frontman, Darby Crash. A highly enjoyable 90 minute feature. New Yorkers can catch a pseudo reunited version of The Germs, featuring SW, on 8/8 @ The Gramercy (the [...]
From Punknews.org : The long-delayed Rhino Films production of What We Do Is Secret has announced a theatrical run this August. The film aims to document the life and untimely death of Germs vocalist Darby Crash. While it does not cover his entire life, the movie focuses on Crash's "five-year plan" to become a legend before comitting suicide in 1980. To ensure that the film was true to the story, Director Roger Grossman enlisted the help ex-Germs guitarist Pat Smear, as well as members of Crash's family and others involved in [...]

What We Do Is Secret "chronicles the rise of The Germs & their charismatic leader Darby Crash whose image, the contorted, screaming face and death grip on the microphone, has become an icon of the US punk movement & a rapt influence on bands since. Darby's cultivated punk attitude, resplendent with the hardcore, infamous on stage self mutilation antics and volatile energy that inspired the band's mesmerized followers to riot, ultimately banned The Germs from playing every venue in the greater Los Angeles area". What stars Shane West & Bijou Phillips amongst others. More info [...]
A lot of great bands played shows this week. We hope you were fortunate to see a few. Spaceland patrons last night got a taste of four of L.A.'s best. Congrats to Les Blanks on the release of their new album Shoot the Horse. After last night's spectacular show, we regret missing out on them for so long -- since that oh so memorable night at the Cat Club with The Monolators a few years ago. New
I am sitting here thinking I might go see the Germs movie tonight, What We Do Is Secret, but chances are it may already be sold out... It's been years in the making, and I don't have that high of expectations for it... Darby has been dead for... visit for more mp3's & random revelations

Punk's Not Dead takes you into the sweaty underground clubs, backyard parties, recording studios, and yes, shopping malls and stadium shows where punk rock music and culture continue to thrive. Thirty years after bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols infamously shocked the system with their hard, fast, status-quo-killing rock, the longest-running punk band in history is drawing bigger crowds than ever, "pop-punk" bands have found success on MTV, [...]
Rock'n'Roll Suicide A clichéd story, made worse in the case of Darby Crash of the Germs by timing. He killed himself the night before John Lennon was shot in 1980. So the next day, a bunch of middle-aged ex-hippies were walking around with black armbands. Sweetly baby-faced and surprisingly gay considering the context, Darby and The Germs necessarily, but unfortunately exploded the L.A. music scene. Really listen to this song. Manimal [...]
Posting 45 Grave earlier this week got me a little nostalgic for the L.A. punk/new wave scene. I'll do something more elaborate later on, but here's a taste. L.A. has never got the props of some other American punk scenes. Maybe that's valid. But I've got hometown pride and nostalgia, so you roll with what you've got. The Germs were probably the most infamous of all the L.A. punk bands, even though they were hardly the most successful. I wasn't into them at the time, but [...]
