by teepoo The Gertrudes is from Kingston, Ontario. Their simplicity is what will probably make you fall in love with them. Take Six Jars for example. There's something pleasantly familiar about the melody and damn the vocals are just so cozy. Not to mention the sounds of childhood just make you super nostalgic The Gertrudes- Six Jars WEBSITE
THE GERTRUDES - Six Jars from Mitch Fillion (southernsouls.ca) on Vimeo . The year is 2173. I am turning 200 this year, thanks to advances in medical technology discovered in 2053, which I was able to pay for after winning Canada's biggest single ticket lottery jackpot in 2029. "Dovetailing with their previous release, The Gertrudes' third album Till The Morning Shows Her Face To Me pursues the sparks and spaces suspended in the wake of their explosive 2010 LP Dawn Time Riot. If that one burned like a rapturous party, Till The Morning Shows Her Face to Me sobers up with sonic experimentation and quiet reflection amidst some razor sharp rock". The choice of superb vocal awareness and Rock/Folk wizardry, The Gertrudes are undoubtedly a band within a band. The perfect inclusion of banjo`s and brass - vocals performed on the wave of a cool Autumn breeze, [...]

It's hard not to love Kingston's The Gertrudes . If they wanted to, the collective could pump out ear pleasing folk that and no one would complain. Instead, the band challenges themselves and their audience with collages of noise, rock, electronics that float around traditional melodies. Honestly, how many other folk troops could be paired with PS I Love You and not be drowned out or overpowered? This fall, The Gertrudes will release Till the Morning Shows Her Face to Me on Apple Crisp, and we couldn't be happier to give [...]
We come to the last of The Wounded Jukebox's Best Songs of 2010 lists. I made an effort to avoid repeating artists on my list in order to include more of the songs that I loved this year. The resulting list is a pretty good representation of the tunes I discovered in 2010. I prefer [...]

Official | Label | Myspace | BUY With this overload of songs popping up on end of year lists, I thought I was going to be overwhelmed with songs and busy sorting through everything. But instead, I have attached myself to this band and fallen madly and deeply in love with The Gertrudes, especially their song "Wind From The South". It is the perfect song for when the cold sets in, it gets your blood pumping, makes you want to clap and [...]
The Gertrudes Dawn Time Riot Folk/Country Release Date: October 16, 2010 Dawn Time Riot is the full-length debut for Kingston, ON the Gertrudes, following their critically acclaimed 2009 EP, Hard Water. A little bit of bluegrass, a dash of folk-infused country, a dribble of ambience and a lot of passion make up Dawn Time Riot . A homegrown ensemble, their latest effort features over 100 Kingston guest musicians. While the traditional folk sounds of banjo, mandolin and harmonica are the glue that [...]

The first full-length record by Kingston's The Gertrudes is not officially released until October, but they are having an end of summer, pre-release party TOMORROW NIGHT (August 27, 2010) at the Wolfe Island Grill to celebrate its unofficial release. The album, "Dawn Time Riot", is a beautiful, joyous affair. Expectations were high after their two EPs and a split 73 and the LP not only fulfills but expands on the promise of their earlier releases. The already exceptionally large band opened its arms wide and invited more and more friends and neighbours [...]

Without question, The Gertrudes test the comfort limits of a music fan. The Gertrudes... they play intimate folk music. Wait, how many members are in this band? Nine, ten, twelve? NOT ENOUGH! We need more people, get me a choir and lets swing into an indie rock anthem! Jokes aside, following up their terrific Hard Water EP - one that made our Best-of EP list - with a sprawling full length, the Kingston outfit threw as many friends and styles as they could into the mix and somehow made it impossible [...]
Over the last few months it's started to become apparent that Kingston, ON is one of the new hotbeds for cool Canadian indie music. The latest addition is the debut full length from The Gertrudes. The album, Dawn Time Riot, comes out on October 16th. Over 100 local musicians were involved in the recording process, including the Queen's Symphony Orchestra. Check out the first track "Wind From

Canada Day is so much better when you don't live in downtown Vancouver (as I did up until this year). Without droves of flag-bearing families wearing face paint descending upon my neighbourhood and making tons of noise, it seems downright pleasant. This must be what people mean when they say "Yay, it's Canada Day." Oh hey, speaking of things that are Canadian, here's a collaboration between two bands from Kinston, ON: the Gertrudes and PS I Love You . The track, "Sailor," has a distinct Maritime vibe, with nautical-themed lyrics, waltz-time strumming and flourishes [...]

(image via thecannon.ca ) Remember a couple of weeks ago when I posted the gorgeous 'Sailor', by Canada's The Gertrudes teaming up with PS I Love You? Go ahead and download it now , I'll wait. It's great, right? Well I've tracked down a few more tracks by The Gertrudes (they're a 12-piece, would you believe) and I'm particularly taken by 'Turn Out The Lights (The River Song)'. Lovely haunting harmonies, plenty of banjo – subtle banjo, not over-the-top Deliverance banjo – and some well placed trumpet action. After a few listens [...]

Thinking : constantly about this weird era we live in and the implications of its ideas and beliefs. Postmodernity's crisis of identity, crisis of representation - all that. Simulacra and signifiers. I've revolved it all in my brain so much I'm getting bored even typing it. All those silly questions about how to get at any sort of truth? How to create anything that's remotely "real"? Is it even possible? ("In a world in which stylistic innovation is no longer possible, all that is left is [...]
You don't really see split singles as much as fans would like, but even among those that do get released this one is unique. Four indie bands, hailing from Toronto and Kingston, have teamed up for a two song 7" single. The Gertrudes, Bruce Peninsula, Muskox, and PS I Love You will be releasing "Shanty Song/Sailor" in a limited edition available at the Apple Crisp Music Festival in Kingston (Mar

It's hard to ignore the power of friendship. Whether it's that extra boost of confidence to try something new or knowing you have support when things go wrong, it's crucial for growth. For Kingston's The Gertrudes , friendship has stepped them out of the church setting they recorded parts of their last - and terrific - Hard Water EP. Now, the band strides defiantly into the bright light standing arm in arm, ready to face down down crashing waves, gusting winds and daring you, me and anyone else to try to break through. [...]
Two great shows to support one great cause. As part of the CFRC Annual Funding Drive (DONATE!) , our friends at Apple Crisp are sponsoring: 1) TONIGHT! - " This is Our Music " featuring Music Maul , PS I Love You , Owl Farm , False Face and The Gertrudes . It is going down at Time to Laugh, 394 Princess Street, on February 11. Doors open at 7:00pm, cover is $5 at the door. 19+ * The Gertrudes - Hard Water (Live at [...]

More and more Canadian EPs. We are stoked that so many of the bands we love offered up their time for this project, whether it was recording a track in a room full of friends or delivering an absolutely crushing cover of one of the best Canadian songs of the year... well, you get the idea that this list is full of goodness.
