concert review : Bodies of Water , Port O'Brien , The Ghost Is Dancing @ El Mocambo (Toronto, Ontario), August 8, 2008 Perhaps Toronto's own Bruce Peninsula who performed last Friday night at Whippersnapper Gallery stole many an indie fan from attending the show at the El Mocambo that night, or at least I like to think so considering the relatively sparse turnout for the triple bill of The Ghost Is Dancing, Port O'Brien and Bodies of Water. Toronto's The Ghost Is Dancing travels the now well-worn path [...]

Amie Dickie - My Vanity (2006) Just after the holidays, a scream comes from the other side of the wall. It's your roommate and he's been drinking in the morning again. He repeats himself like he's trying to make a passionate point with only one good argument. He has found a toy trumpet. He is singing this song, which Simon says is a good choice because even the original version sounds like a critical channel has been muted - the channel that distracts from persistence [...]
Those of you who have been reading this blog from the beginning (ie. July 2007), might have noticed that my concert listings seem to get smaller each month. In fact, back in the early days I used to post a list of all the shows of interest, regardless of whether or not I was going. While clean and simple, I ultimately found this course a bit redundant given the nearly complete listings found at places like Rotate This and Soundscapes . These days I'm taking a more personal approach and only mentioning shows that [...]

Polyphonic Spree - The Fragile Army And I thought it couldn't get any more grandiose than Neon Bible ! The 'Spree dive into huge anthemic, choral pop headfirst on this album--a result that's occasionally breathtaking but one that can feel forced at times. Some of the songs bleed into each other by the end, but if you don't think that'll bother you, please pick up this record. It's feel-fucking-fantastic music, if nothing else. "a bunch of hyper Canadians that really love music and one day decided to make some of their own." - The Ghost Is Dancing Fantastic! I can't get enough of them. Their self titled EP was released on Sept. 19th and I admitted along time ago that I am a major sucker for indie rock embellished mini-symphonies and this 8 member band does a damn good job of delivering just what I like. I look forward to their Spring full length release. :) The Ghost Is Dancing , [...]
