Acá el video: Surfer Blood covers The Pixies [...]
Watch Surfer Blood perform Pixies 'Gigantic' with help from the Girls at Dawn.

At least CMJ Thursday is pretty straight-forward during the day. It's the I Guess I'm Floating (one of my very favorite blogs) Pianos day party. It's pretty much wall-to-wall worthwhile bands including Baths, Beach Fossils, Oberhofer, Teen Daze, Young Man, Braids, and Gobble Gobble. The nighttime gets much more complicated. Of course, part of this is that by the third day of CMJ, whatever showcase you go to probably has at least one band you've already seen, and it's harder to skip around from showcase to showcase in NYC than it is in the nicely walkable Austin, Texas. [...]
While it seemed most of New York's concert going public were being soaked by the rain in Central Park we spent last Wednesday comfortable and dry at the Mercury Lounge. While the reformed Pavement were rocking their sopping wet ears with classic tunes we were checking out buzz bands, trying to figure out who was... Read More

Girls at Dawn, "Come Here to Die"
Following up a stellar single and an EP on HoZac and Captured Tracks respectively, this un-tethered trio bounce to the garage haven of Norton Records for a full length entitled Call The Doctor . Full of the same jubilant energy that's made their past releases so infectiously fun, the album pairs the sugar crunch of girl group harmonies with the strange air of spooky sparseness that's always held sway over their songs. Still, though the band's songs are packed full of hooks, it always seems as if they've written things purely to make themselves smile. As if the three [...]

The line-up for this year's Goner Fest , the Memphis garage-rock festival put on by the label and record store of the same name, was recently announced. Now in its seventh year, this year's Goner Fest, which will run from September 22 to 26, is highlighted by the return of Guitar Wolf (pictured), the storied louder-than-loud Japanese rockers whose first American album, Wolf Rock , was released by Goner in 1993. Eric Fiedl, the founder of Goner, will perform himself, with The Oblivians (also recently reunited) headlining on Friday night. Other sure-to-be [...]

TUES 6/01 - JAY ELECTRONICA @ Red Hook Park (Brooklyn, NY) | FREE | 7PM WED 6/02 - AIR WAVES @ South Street Seaport (Manhattan, NY) | FREE | 1PM WED 6/02 - [...]

This post is a bit past its prime, since the show happened on Friday. Still, the evening is worth recounting. It was an electric night in Williamsburg; people seemed to be spilling out of every bar and restaurant, enjoying the nice weather. Monster Island basement was no exception, though the crowded venue seemed more like a place where people were just hanging out, rather than watching bands. I arrived just in time for Girls At Dawn. As I predicted, my enjoyment of them was directly correlated to their bad-assness. Which was unfortunately nill. The songs have some merit, but it [...]

This is another one of those shows moved from the much bigger Market Hotel to much smaller Monster Island Basement. Harlem's new album, Hippies , is garage-tacular, ripping off one hook-laden rocker after another. The photo from above is when I saw them at Mercury Lounge the day of that crazy snowstorm, where they played a good show for a weather-weary audience. These guys are real Texan punks; I like the feel of their live show and will always recommend it. Why I am MOST excited for this show, however, are Alabamans (is that right?) Thomas [...]
Monday: Darlings, The Sneaks, Cybelle Blood, + Night Reports @ Bruar Falls 8pm FREE [ info ] While Monday may just be the most depressing day of the week, it can be made better when you know there's a kick ass free show lined up to end your day. Tonight three bands I've never heard of and Darlings open the doors to Bruar Falls for a free show. Now I know there's always a bit of trepidation when you don't know the bands, but since there's no cover or [...]

After spending some time hiding away in shame for giving us bands like New Found Glory, Florida has finally started cranking out some awesome tunes lately and we have been taking note! It makes sense considering the sunny vibes and year long party atmosphere that is cultivated in Florida, that bands like Holiday Shores and Surfer Blood would opt for glowing jams to celebrate the Sunshine State. This time around we are not reveling in shiny new pop sounds, instead Lil' Daggers opt for a garage sound that has its roots much further north. [...]

Sweet Lord, I love Chicago's HoZac Records . I am a relatively new convert to the label, introduced to it in late 2009 by Matador Records' Gerard Cosloy. But, trust me, it was love at first speaker blow-out. Since then, I find myself talking about HoZac bands all the time -- from Mickey to Myelin Sheaths to Wizzard Sleeve -- forwarding their MySpace pages to friends, dropping the label's name in interviews and mostly (and most joyously) listening to whatever I can get my hands on. [...]
With a little melancholy and nostalgia thrown in for good measure
A list of shows that you don't want to miss this week

I just got home from the Cake Shop show. It was pretty good, but I am tired. I'll post those pics tomorrow as soon as I am able. As for tomorrow, the optimal show is most definitely Harlem at Mercury Lounge. I don't really like seeing bands there, but these guys will put on a kickass show anywhere. You'd probably be better off seeing the Austin-based group at Monster Island on Friday with Frankie & the Outs, but you might also want to go see Obits and Grey Goods on Friday, so this show is a good idea. I'm having [...]
Monday: Knight School, Diehard, Family Portrait, + Golden City @ The Studio at Webster Hall 8pm FREE [ info ] After a pretty wild weekend that included the Super Bowl, birthday parties, and some fantastic music, we're probably going to take Monday night off to catch out breath before the rest of this week kicks our ass! If you were one of the people that panicked about the blizzard that never happened and spent most of the weekend indoors it is time to for you to venture out and what better way to do [...]
