a sleepy post-something what the fuck was that? oh yeah it’s a beat. a sometimes voice. of sorts. smothered. then tiny jet engine squeezed through birth canal. an oxymoronic bone-dry ooze, phil spector vomitting dust, bastard exhaust excreting smuts and gilings… gland , it’s all rather reserved (relatively), a ghost-town shit and shine, cobwebbed and musty. stately in harshmachinewomb way, eno doing ambient 2: music for tractors… grumbles and rumbles along like metal mickey’s guts rusted by cough syrup. the noise equivalent of rashomon. the same tonal textural clamour played out four different ways. there ain’t much happening, unlike [...]
As Spring switches gears into Summer, Athens heats up with the annual amalgam of mostly family friendly music, arts and film festival functionally known as AthFest . The three day festival, June 20 through 24, offers two outdoor stages stacked with local bands and a few from Atlanta. These shows are free and feature must-see stand-outs including Atlas Sound, Reptar, Elf Power, Yacht Rock Review, Soulphonics and Ruby Velle, The Glands and Five Eight. For only $20, you can buy a wristband that allows you entrance to an array of venues with additional great lineups. The [...]

The Glands: Ross Shapiro (guitar) and Joe Rowe (drums) Photo: Jonathan Phillips * I love this picture of The Glands because it perfectly sums up my relationship toward their music. They put out two albums of strange, beautiful, heavy, melodic, grooving (in a good way) rockpop music and then disappeared. Oh, they'll reunite every now and then in their native Athens, GA, but for the rest of us they remain a total enigma, forever [...]

Last night it was Mercury Lounge in NYC where the Condo Fucks (aka Yo La Tengo playing covers) opened the show. According to [...]

Condo Fucks @ Magnetic Field in 2008 ( more by Bryan Bruchman ) Exactly a week before they play the Norton Records celebration at the Bell House , The Condo Fucks will open for The Glands at Mercury Lounge (one of two previously mentioned NYC-area shows that the reunited Georgia band are playing). Tickets for Mercury Lounge and Maxwell's (where Emperor X open) are still on sale. The Glands have also announced more shows since [...]

photos by Ryan Myers The Glands @ Georgia Theatre The Glands played the Georgia Theatre in Athens, Georgia exactly one month ago today (on August 1st), christening the historic space on the occasion of its re-opening . The Glands are a band whose musical output, which is almost entirely great, suffers only from an infrequency of output. Since 1998, they have released just two albums, Double Thriller [...]

Athens, Georgia music fans have reason to rejoice. After a fire gutted the historic Georgia Theatre in 2009, the music venue has been rebuilt and will open its doors again with an August 1st concert by legendary Athens band The Glands (they put out Patterson Hood's fourth favorite album of all time ). The official celebration continues for two weeks with Chuck Leavell, RJD2, J Roddy Walston and the Business, Reptar, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and more. Check the theater's site for more info . The famed Athens group has been rehearsing for possible performances

"Men Without Ties" is a segment where we interview people who aren't musicians but who are essential to the music scene, to get a slightly different outlook about music and the music industry. Managing a band’s tour and keeping everything (and everyone) on track and in check can be extensive and tricky. More established and famous bands may have lots of help in this area with multiple handlers, but for the majority of indie bands, the crews are small. As the leader of the entire entourage, a tour manager has [...]

Speaking of songs with which I have a strong memory association, this song reminds me of a sparkly late spring morning, just after my freshman year of college. I was living back at my parent's house, walking down to Montclair to get a cup of coffee. The day was beautiful and perfect and I kind of was asking myself (in a playful, non-serious way) why I had gone away from their home. It's funny, but no one seems to know much about this band and no one seems to know where they are now. Someone even made [...]
One of the best records Athens has ever produced
What is it that makes us want to deconstruct art by units of time? Lists. We love making them. We love arguing over them. And here, on the verge of a new decade, we’re in a position to do the same again. What were the best albums of the past ten years? Here at AD, we [...]
Bad news to report. According to a video posted on BeastieBoys.com, Adam Yauch has cancer in a gland in his throat. Fortunately it is very treatable, but for the time being it looks like the... [[This is an excerpt. The pages look just silly here, you know? Why not just hit up the article, homes? We'd appreciate that!]]

Dappled Cities hail from the Down Under, that being the case, they aren't too well-known in these parts, which is entirely shameful. They've created an album full of lush arrangements, freckled with bit of pop-perfect melodies. Their sound is reminiscent of a lot of the early OOs indie bands, such as The Glands, crafting varying elements of sound and atmospherics beneath infectious moments of brilliance. You can tell the band has more great things to offer, especially if you check out their stop off on the Daytrotter. [...]

Oops, I botched the upload. MP3s are re-uploading now, and should be working soon if they aren't when you try them. I've finally located these files of the last Glands show I recorded after looking for them several times. Happily, I found several other missing gems in the process to post over the coming weeks. Nothing new to report on The Glands; both their albums are well worth picking up if you haven't. Track 1 - Fortress Track 2 - [...]

Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I've collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their "song obsessions of the week." Quite often it's easy to explain why the song is good; it's much hard to explain why we're obsessed. Maybe you'll become obsessed with one of these. - Adrian ( me ): Horse Feathers - Curs in the Weeds [...]
