photos and words by Alex Crick It's exactly 505 miles from the KEXP studios to the heart of downtown Boise and that's exactly how far I traveled to catch the inaugural year of Treefort Music Fest . Featuring 138 bands from the Northwest and beyond Treefort Fest bills itself as a new and emerging artist festival, which it was in every way. After arriving in Boise late Friday afternoon, about a day and a half after the festival had already begun, I caught my first performance with Sister Crayon . [...]

Responsible for showing the world The Globes , Brite Futures , The Lonely Forest , and many other KEXP favorites, EMP's Sound Off! competition is a must know – especially if you live in the PNW. Now in its eleventh year, Sound Off! is an underage "battle of the bands" of sorts. Selecting some of the most promising music from the 21 and younger crowd from the PNW, 12 bands are judged on a set of live music at Seattle's EMP. The 12 bands are split into three semi-final rounds where they compete for the [...]

Kelli Schaefer ::: photo by Dylan Priest Having fallen deep down a used-vinyl sized hole this year, I managed to completely miss most of the national blog buzz bands and mp3s making the press release copy&paste rounds of 2011, those things that so often fill end of the year lists. But considering the immense output from [...]

He's back. Henry Rollins , that is. Always ready to read a good book, the former Black Flag frontman will take the world in his hands - somewhat literally - when he hits the road next month for a Costco shopping cart's worth of spoken word dates. As previously reported , he'll first support Dinosaur Jr. in their mini holiday jaunt, interviewing the Amherst, MA legends prior to their set, but come January, the acclaimed author will be everywhere, from Germany to Italy to Ponte Vedre Beach, FL. He's like the disease you always wanted. Check out the whole [...]

Out on International Feel with only 120 vinyls pressed (selling out immediately)...this track is just stupidly big, a little too big some might say (so much so it almost didn't get a release) but it certainly did it's job when we saw the Horse Meat Disco boys drop in it NYC back in September! Acid...check, jazzy pianos keys...check, playful vocals...check, sustained house strings...check! Interested to see what this starts to make on discogs, presumably the idea with the limited run!

The Atlantic put together a handy reference guide of rude gestures to carry with you wherever you go . It was adapted from Romana Lefevre's Rude Hand Gestures of the World . Anything that helps travelers better throw down with the locals is fine by me. Here's "Tacano" over on the right. In Mexico and parts of South America, the gesture above means "you're stingy." In many parts South of the border, the elbow is linked to stinginess. For extra emphasis, you can bang your elbow on [...]

via the Boston Globe When they arrived in California for a photo shoot, Potter laid down the law. "I said, "From now on, no denim." It was literally a line in the sand that we jumped over," she says. "Everyone started to define their own look and identity. I wanted a physical revolution. Queen Victoria had the Kensington system, and I have the no denim system."

In Tim Story's 2002 film Barbershop , nobody really gets a haircut. Maybe some extras. But, the real focus of the film is the drama within the store. The same thing could be said for Astronautalis ' new clip for "Measure the Globe", one of the more unique cuts off of his latest CoS Top Star-earning LP, This Is Our Science - which hits store today. In the Cluster 1 exclusive, the multi-instrumentalist, along with Ceschi (on guitar), lets loose on the chair, where rather than shedding off locks, he cuts away pieces of [...]

After the debauchery of D.C. , I jumped on an Amtrak through the Chesapeake Bay of Maryland, the dense suburbia of Delaware and up through New Jersey (where my favorite Housewives live) into New York City. I met a good friend at Penn Station, where he took me back into the subway to his apartment on Bleeker St. in Greenwich Village, referred to as simply "The Village," because only a tourist would have to identify which one. The next couple days I explored. Times Square: tourist marketing hell. Central Park, big but kinda boring compared [...]

I like to post mixes comprised of the songs that keep me company whenever I travel, however, the last few trips have gone mixless, sadly. So, this is a bit of a combination of a few different excursions, which I think flows nicely for an August day. While Future Self has a loftiness to it, there are very few individual songs that really stand out - everything is coated in a veneer of desperation, of an almost faux attempt at being down and out for the sheer sake of it. I've noticed a reoccurring theme lately in the sphere of indie rock: a preoccupation with the natural world. You see it now and then in band names - Grizzly Bear, Wolf Parade, and New York's Ghost Bunny come to mind - but, more and more, it's showing up on the lyrics sheet as a [...]
