Sometimes pretend people (ie you, because you're on the internet) can be so much better than real ones. I can explain to my parents that the reason I have neglected them for the last little while is because I have spent most of the last week gazing at the white lines on a motorway, driving Loch Lomond around the UK for their first UK mini-tour, but deep down they'll probably still be miffed that I haven't called, written emailed or anything at all for about two weeks. You, on the other hand, have such a rich and varied [...]

Meursault God Don't Like it have a free Download of Meursault's ' Crank Resolutions ' up for grabs. It's taken from their 2nd album "All Creatures will Make Merry" which is due out at the end of May. Wounded Knee I caught Drew aka 'Wounded Knee' last week at the warm up to the Dead Parrots 3rd birthday bash, alongside the ever fabulous RM Hubbert. Both of them put on top performances, so I must admit that I was well chuffed when I stumbled across his newest release, The Ayrtime.Org EP, it's [...]
I've missed far too much music in the past year to make a proper best of list, so instead, here's a list of 22 songs that I've loved from 2009. Listed in alphabetical order, not preference. Even though all of them are bloody good. 4 or 5 Magicians - Preaching to the Converted So 2009 didn't turn out to be the year that 4 or 5 Magicians finally "made it". They did manage to put out their first proper album though, and despite a few missteps, it's an excellent start. [...]

The Morgue Party Candidate I'm still in two mind as to whether this is one of the best or worst names for a band that I have heard in ages, but the one thing is for sure their EP 'Good Morning, Good Night' is pretty damn good, and it's available for free here . If you like what you hear and you are going to the Define Pop [...]

I'm not sure there's a voice I like more right now than Catherine Ireton's. Between the God Help the Girl record (which is still growing on me with every play) and The Go Away Birds , she's a pivotal part of two my favourite bands of the year. The Go Away Birds are a rather simple proposition. Most of these songs aren't overly complex or flashy. Most are just a guitar and Ireton's voice, but that's more than enough when you're dealing with a voice like this. It also [...]
Go Away Birds are one of my happiest recent radio discoveries, a delicate and lovely little live session a few weeks ago, featuring only the beautiful voice of Catherine Ireton (also to be heard on God Help the Girl) and the gently picked acoustic guitar of Michael John McCarthy (also ...

By far the most interesting elements on the God Help The Girl record earlier this year were the vocals from Catherine Ireton. Her crisp, emotive vocals gave life to the character of Eve throughout the story. Encouraged to find some more of her work, I came upon The Go Away Birds . I can't really tell if the band is a main project or just something on the side, but they do have two EPs out, both of which are available for free. The band is a two piece made up of [...]
I love the radio. In this, the Age of the Internetz, it's always a pleasure to discover good new music through old-fashioned means. Even if it is digital radio. Last week was particularly good. Just when I was doing a 'Scottish week' (which became more of a week and a ...

Track Listing 1. 2. 3. Download Myspace Home Comprised of Ireland's Catherine Ireton (now of God Help the Girl fame)and Scotland's Michael John McCarthy, they play acoustic folk music. They only came to my attention because of the whole GHtG link. having recorded far too many songs for just one album, the duo have decided to release an EP for each season for the next 8 years or so. so far we [...]

Hello. I am Bart. Woo. So I'm doing the Monday gig listing. Mainly cos I'm usuallythe first person to jump in any time Matthew misses anything. You'll notice there's no music files. It's not that I don't really know what I'm doing. Well, not only that. For some reason the file hosting site that me, Dylan and Euan were given access to during Matthew's little holiday seems to have mysteriously dissappeared from the web. And it's only been three days. Crumbs. Hopefully songbytoad.com will still be here when he gets back - but who's to say [...]

pic I can't believe how silently this entered and exited this week's music news: The (sort of) return of Belle & Sebastian ! God Help the Girl , 'a story set to music', is a project dreamed up by Stuart Murdoch some years ago when touring Belle & Sebastian's album Dear Catastrophe Waitress . According to GhtG's Myspace page, the idea came to Stuart [...]

Greetings everyone - I trust we've all obediently clambered back onto the tediously repetetive hamster wheel we laughably call Proper Job. Here I sit at my desk, surrounded by people actually taking things seriously, vainly hoping that they can't really tell that I really don't give a shit and hoping they'll kindly let me get on with my life as unencumbered by actual, meaningful tasks as possible. There's no need to recover from Christmas in our house. Mrs. Toad and I only really drank a lot about three or four times over the holidays, and even [...]
