Chuck Brown , the musician affectionately known as the "Godfather of Go-Go", passed away at the age of 75 on Wednesday (May 16). Brown has been hospitalized with pneumonia for the last two months, and died of multiorgan failure due to sepsis. Brown's career kicked off in the 1960s, and became one of the pioneers of go-go music, a subgenre of funk. His 1970 single, "Bustin' Loose," was one of his biggest hits, and was later sampled by Nelly in his 2000 Grammy-winning dancefloor staple, "Hot in Herre." [Via ABC News ]
Upon hearing D.C. legend Chuck Brown was battling pneumonia two weeks ago, the thought of the "Godfather of Go-Go" not making it was always in the back of my mind. [...]

İranlı Yönetmen Asghar Farhadi ’nin 2011 yapımı Bir Ayrılık (Jodaiye Nader az Simin) filmi üzerine uzun zamandır bir yazı yazmayı düşünüyordum. Bu yıl yapılan Oscar Ödül töreninde beklediğim üzere “ En İyi Yabancı Film” dalında Oscar ödülü kazanınca artık bu yazı farz oldu diye düşündüm. Filme başlamadan önce filmde özellikle üstüne basa basa vurgulanan sınıflı toplum düzenine dair eleştirileri dikkate alarak sınıf kavramının tarihsel sürecine bir göz atalım. Latince classis sözcüğünden gelen sınıf kavramı, yurttaşları servete göre ayıran çeşitli kategorileri belirtir. Özellikle 19 yy. [...]
On March 15th, 1972, "The Godfather" was released in theaters. The film was a turning point in cinema, not just in its portrayal of gangsters—which up to that point were seen in films typically as heartless, one dimensional bad guys—but its style and unique form of storytelling was an unofficial kickoff to a great new era in cinema. 40 years later, it's still one of the most venerated, respected, and quotable movies ever, cited by many as the greatest film of all time. For this week's edition of Mixtape Madness, we compiled a set of songs honoring the [...]

Needle Drop by R. Stevie Moore It seems my voice turns up in a big way on R. Stevie Moore's latest Bandcamp release, Space Bar . I'm all over the last track for some reason. I know I name-checked him in the review, but I'm pretty sure the guy knows I'm a fan. I mean, I've even bought music off of him via e-mail. I dunno. I just think it's hilarious. And to be honest, I've partially forgotten what review he's even sampling, hah. I think it's my Ariel Pink review, but I [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Spinner Interview Ben Stansall/AFP | Getty Images Afrika Bambaataa is a South Bronx legend. 30 years ago, he pioneered a sound and culture that's been co-opted into a billion-dollar industry: hip-hop. But Bambaataa, who began hosting parties to draw kids out of gang culture, says he wants a return to the original movement which encouraged b-boying and street art as well as MCing and DJing. "There are [...]

The godfather of Turkish psychedelic rock has been entrancing me since discovering him in my MP3 slush pile years ago. Stoked for this new comp! Kenny Bloggins of The Decibel Tolls wrote on ALTERED ZONES : Erkin Koray is unequivocally considered the father of popular Turisk rock and impetus for increased sonic adventurousness in the burgeoning Anatolian garage scene. However, it wasn’t until the early ’70s when Koray was finally afforded the opportunity to record full-length albums, as opposed to the 45 singles he was accustomed to. Here is [...]

Tweet I've been on an electronic and synthesizing kick, recently, after seeing Com Truise , and producer Daniel "Skit" Bruin fits perfectly into that. I won't hold his record label's silly name against Skit, but "Rankadank"? Really? I'm tempted to just call them "badonkadonk." But I digress. The tracks, "Capoeira" and "Atlantis" are definitely easy to listen to with an interesting and crisp sound. In the rushed track of "Capoeira" Skit adds the very fitting Godfather quote "Just when I thought I was out, [...]
