Le gospel est un chant religieux chrétien, protestant d'origine, qui prend la suite des negro spirituals. Il s'est développé en même temps que le blues primitif. Les artistes modernes de gospel ont aussi intégré des éléments de musique soul. Le gospel se développa d'abord chez les afro-américains et les blancs du sud, avant de conquérir le reste de l'Amérique et du monde.
