![Celebrating 20 Years Of Modern-Rock Countdowns, From Siouxsie To Staind [Corporate Rock Still Sells]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1242125_lg.jpg)
Many people find it hard to tell the great from the godawful when it comes to 21st-century mainstream rock. To help figure out which is which, here's "Corporate Rock Still Sells," where Al "GovernmentNames" Shipley examines what's good, bad, and ugly in the world of rock and roll. This time around, he celebrates the 20th anniversary of Billboard 's Modern Rock chart by cherry-picking some of its most oddly notable chart-toppers: Last month, the Hot 100—the big cheese of Billboard 's singles charts—turned 50, and the publication's [...]

So, the whole idea behind guilty pleasures is that you should feel at least somewhat guilty about listening to them. If you don't feel guilty about it, do you really have a guilty pleasure? Technically, no. But there are cases were you should feel guilty about it, but don't for some reason. Usually you "justify it" in some crazy and not-completely-logical way. Yeah, we know you do it (and, in all honesty, we may or may not do it ourselves). Without further ado, here are some songs that should-be our guilty pleasures (and some [...]
Who as a kid didn't like Sesame St? Trick question! There's no answer to that. Everybody loved Sesame St. I still love Sesame St, perhaps now more than ever. Their special guests just keep getting more frequents and they keep booking artists closer and closer to my heart. Here, take a closer look at some of my favourite clips: Goo Goo Dolls! Remember way back when? Brings back good memories! But it also reminds me of how disturbingly cute Elmo can be. Backstreet Boys! Before the reunion! [...]

The first thing to note was that I was expecting a quiet intimate gig. I mean how popular can the ageing American's The Goo Goo Dolls be? Very, it seems. All the best vantage points are gone, the crowd preferring to go for these spots rather than try to get up close, as tends to happen with the younger crowd. They're all avoiding the moshpit I guess, like L. We stand at the back of the floor, where I fear L can't see very much. We catch the end of London's Slaves to Gravity, who formed in 2006 [...]

Power Pop : Not just an under-appreciated music genre, but the style that made up much of our college radio playlists. In the 1970s it was Big Star who pioneered the sound by combining the melody and harmony of the Beatles with the immediacy of The Who. Cheap Trick was perhaps its best proponent in the next decade, the 1980s. The below bands, most notably the Posies and Teenage Fanclub... Following the advice on hosting from FiL , and as a means of making up for the past week's absence, here are MP3s of the first 10 songs talked about on the journey so far (follow normal procedure to download these files; I have limited bandwidth so would prefer streaming was kept to a minimum): S1: Beck - We Dance Alone S2: Jason Webley - Eleven Saints (with Jay Thompson) S3: Mark Hamn - Mono S4: Yann Tiersen - Monochrome (Live) S5: Jodie Foster [...]

It seems like this week is focused more on compilations and cover releases, with new material here and there. Those releasing 'best of' CDs include: The Goo Goo Dolls , Spice Girls and of course the much publicized Led Zeppelin " Mothership " compilation. Prog rock supergroup Queensrÿche as well as the Phili quintet from Boyz II Men have each released a cover record in the form of " Take Cover " and respectively " Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA ." As for the albums [...]

Next week will see the legendary pop rock band The Goo Goo Dolls release their long awaited best of volume, titled " The Goo Goo Dolls Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 – The Singles ." I`m very excited for the Rogue Wave show @ The Mod Club tonight...If u come here once in awhile then you already know I`m a big fan. This will be my second time seeing the band live, and what makes this one more exciting is I will get to hear the new material. " Asleep At Heaven`s Gate " is a fantastic listen and I`m curious to see how it sounds at The Mod ....Also as I mentioned on the 11th of October....I`m still in the process of turning some of my CD`s into Mp3`s....this [...]
So do we embrace rap, anymore, or just rap parodies? This, from this week's Flight of the Conchords - HBO you're so cutting edge - is at least three years old ( this version 's pretty sharp). It adds some dancing and a verse, so I guess that's okay. More listenable than Lady Sov. Also: "Perchance." I'd listen to more hip-hop were there a higher likelihood of running across the word "Perchance." Somewhere other than the zillion YouTube vids featuring white suburban kids doing high school projects on Shakespeare. [...]

Stopping by Can you see the sunset from the southside? the other day, I heard a track by a band called Ruth Ruth which pretty much embodies everything that makes 90s punk great. Grittier than Green Day, more melodic than The Descendents, driving drums, and a bubbly little bass beat that makes you want to get up and jump around. And it's all over in about two and a half minutes. Tenderlung - Ruth Ruth Intrigued, I explored some more, and found a band I wish I [...]
