The Gorgeous Colours - Locksmith There's something celebratory about the way this song introduces itself, all shimmering drums and guitars that trace about like fireworks against the inky night's canvas. Dreamy melodies are picked out and give shape to lyrics that somehow seem sweet and earnest instead of schmaltzy: you're my lovely girl / my thump-thump beats for you This song is from one of my favourite albums of last year, the Gorgeous Colours' self-titled debut. It's beautiful, and though it [...]

I have just done the now traditional best of the year mixtape (cd) for my neice and our good friend in the UK. It wasn't an easy task this year trying to fit everything into 70 minutes. I think 2008 was a great year for Irish music. You can argue that there wasn't a 'Joshua Tree' or 'Live and Dangerous' to be seen but the sheer volume of really good albums was encouraging. Remember to support the artists by visiting their MySpace, catching them live and buying their albums. Best of 2008 Mixtape 1. The Coronas [...]

..... Why Don't I? End of year lists on the blogsphere are interesting and fun. Firstly I have not heard every Irish release this year. Nor have I seen every gig by an Irish artist. So this list is made with a limited small amount of albums heard and gigs attended. Irish Album of the Year 1. Pony Club – Post Romantic 2. One Day International - Blackbird 3. The Gorgeous Colours – Self-titled It was a great year for Irish album releases. I have enjoyed the albums by Jape, [...]

The Gorgeous Colours - Miss You I move out of the airport unseen, the second of the day, wrapped up in thoughts like scarves. I think of you sitting lazily on all those clouds above my head. I see the leaves colouring themselves in for autumn, and think about how I do the same. I think of you, sprawled out, half-wrapped in bedsheets. I think of you, clothes hanging from you like a puppet's loose strings, hanging like the night, a sheet pinned up by stars. I think of standing outside your door in an [...]
We've been here before of course but I don't think I could close the door on the Gorgeous Colours stunning debut without giving 'Miss You' an airing. I'm sure it'll be a single someday such is its studied melodies, anthem like refrains and jangling chords. In what is turning out to be a pretty good year for Irish albums (!, well September turned out be some month) the Gorgeous Colours ranks

Excerpts remixed from "The Emily Valentine Poems" by Zoe Whittall. "Me and Armini" - Emiliana Torrini It takes 40 cups of coffee to kill you. I want to test this theory but my girlfriend, sipping blueberry tea slowly, says your impulsivity is unsettling . She brings me a double Americano and straw when the plays last more than two hours. "Fireplace" - Lost in the Trees I always end relationships on Ossington street. [...]

After listening to this new album, I can't help but imagine that Ireland is a nation cut off from the rest of us. At least for the last 35 years or so, but I know that's not true, so it's seems more likely that the members of Dublin's The Gorgeous Colours have been locking themselves away with great old vinyl albums and letting their young minds soak up beautiful melodies. And now not only do they craft addictive melodies, but they don't encumber the songs with superfluous bells and whistles. What you are hearing [...]
You've probably heard me moaning about the state of the Irish music scene on a couple of occasions but of late several bright chinks of light have started to appear. Now you can add the Gorgeous Colours to a growing batch of newbies who may yet help usher in a new dawn. The Dublin acts' eponymous debut is being launched in Whelan's on the 5th (tomorrow night if you reading this today) and it

THE GORGEOUS COLOURS For some bizarre reason, my mind always associates the music of The Gorgeous Colours with various bright colours. Perhaps this is due to some masterstroke in subliminal marketing, or it could have something to do with their stage clothing; each member subtley draped in orange/purple/yellow/white/gre en. Or maybe this is vaguely related to their glittering summertime pop tunes; a type of mellow tropicana indie (could this be a scene? "Nu-mellowtropicanaindie"?) which aurally resembles what we'd hear if we had Nick Thorburn's eccentricities and innovation in front [...]
