Guitar-driven garage rock is really starting to make its way back into the forefront of music as of late. With a landscape dominated by synths the past couple of years, more traditional bands took a back seat, but no more. Leave it to Adult Swim to put together a compilation of the best and brightest simply titled Garage Swim . It features the likes of Bass Drum of Death, Apache Dropout, Thee Oh Sees, JEFF The Brotherhood, Black Lips, King Khan and The Gris Gris, Mikal Cronin, Mind Spiders, Weekend, [...]

Cartoon Network's Adult Swim has put together another drool-worthy compilation appropriately titled, Garage Swim . Due out May 6th via William Street Records, and sponsored by Dr. Pepper, the record strings together unreleased songs by Thee Oh Sees, JEFF the Brotherhood, Mikal Cronin, Black Lips, King Tuff, Weekend, King Khan and the Gris Gris, Mind Spiders, Bass Drum of Death, and many more. In anticipation, stream the scuffy dance floor madness of Thee Oh Sees' inclusion, "Devil Again". We stress that you find a greasy wooden floor for this one. [...]

In a sea of near constant reunions, the Gories 2010 North American run continues to remain one of the most fulfilling of the bunch. More of that, please. Which brings us to the following: Songs We Taught The Gories - a 2009 WFMU compilation comprised of tracks the band sourced for covers over the years, [...]

The day after SXSW ends is always oddly quiet, like Rome must have been in the early Middle Ages after the aqueducts had broken down. There are still people, but less of them, and they have less to do and less places to do it. So we headed out to the boonies to check out Gay Bi Gay Gay , a festival in the middle of nowhere east of Austin that celebrates all things queer. After a few false rides down farm roads that led to nowhere (there were warning signs, but I seriously thought they were [...]

luke mcgarry The Gories were something between ‘primal’ and ‘feral’ and ‘savage’ and all the other words that make an Animal Control officer strap on the special gloves, and they didn’t need anything besides Back From the Grave comps, guitars and Thunderbird wine to chop out a couple dozen songs that sound like they came out of the backwoods solely to hunt for prey. Their recording career includes both Alex Chilton and a Quonset hut and guitarists Dan Kroha (later of Demolition Doll Rods) and Mick Collins (later of Dirtbombs) even backed [...]

photos by Jason House ...lo and behold, to my amazement, after Saturday's show, I've now seen The Gories do their thing threefold. And each time has been better than the last, as if they've picked up where they left off to become meaner and leaner. This time, they started with the obvious ("Hey, Hey We're The Gories"), but as they announced, tonight's performance delved into lesser known cuts from singles and comps. As such, we heard their wooly version of The Keggs' "To Find [...]

The Gories will hit Maxwell's and the Bell House next month.
Our trip down to Portland in early September for Music Fest Northwest was admittedly just as much a trip for the record stores as it was for the live music. They are all over. Mississippi Records in North Portland's Mississippi district was probably the most interesting place to us with a varied selection that doesn't [...]

(Amsterdam May 1992 - Photo by Willem Kolvoort) Sure. The Gories were making music before I was even born, but with my crazy love for the band, I'm positive I was a groupie in a previous life. I didn't think they could have any more swagger until Ty Segall released a cover (a while ago, but I just got my hands on a digital copy) of their song "I Think I've Had It". One rock god covering a group of musical geniuses - It doesn't get any better. Inappropriate if I want [...]

Been waiting to hear this band for awhile and little did I know that they had a bandcamp with a few songs on it. The OBN III 's master the snotty proto-punk of The Dead Boys with lyrical prowess and blues rhythms of the Gories. The Austin, TX band is presumably the project of Orville Bateman Neeley III (OBN III), member of Denton Punk mainstay Bad Sports . In a side note, if you recall Casual Victim Pile, there is a sequel and The OBN III's are one of the many bands on it, check it out [...]
Influential garage rock trio The Gories are reunited (again!) for a North American tour, and they played their first Chicago shows in quite a long time at the Empty Bottle last Friday and Saturday night. Well, we have some great footage from their Saturday show courtesy of John Yingling of Gonzo Chicago . The video begins with a short clip of Chicago rockers CoCoComa who opened the show along with Hollows . Check it out below: httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch ?v=ndDGiM8EhL8

photography by Rachel Carr The reformed Gories drew an interesting crowd to The Echo—pre show, the O.G. fans were swapping anecdotes about all the cute youngsters they'd met at the bar, who were so fresh faced they couldn't possibly have been around back in the days before the acrimonious break up in 1992. Once the took the stage, though, actual scuffles broke out between those who wanted to dance like lunatics and the few who were intent on standing stock still at the front. On the whole, good naturedness prevailed, both on and [...]
You mean there's more? I'm running on three hours of sleep, pretending I'm 23 again. I'm not 23 again. Maybe I am 23 again, because I'm hell-bent on seeing cuddly blog babes Surfer Blood. These kids from West Palm Beach, Florida look like kids ... except for the frizzy-haired cowbellist, who looks like John Oates circa 1977. The band's debut Astro Coast is still holding up for me. It's a great guitar record. I'm guessing many a fickle blogger has spat the band out since the record's release in January. Maybe not. Live, the band [...]

Here we are, day four of MFNW's five-day marathon, and only slightly worse for wear. Last night had its epic moments-some of mine included the Black Lips screaming like dinosaurs; the Shaky Hands playing their last show with the current lineup; Okkervil River playing "Red"; tacos at the after-party-and a couple of disappointments, as well. Read on, if you're not already downtown getting pumped for the Decemberists. See you tonight! -Casey Wonder Ballroom, 4:45 pm. London’s Male Bonding is slicing through a spirited yet still somewhat disaffected (how terribly British of [...]
