It's Thursday, and we've yet to do a Video Hits 2010, so this seems like the perfect time for one, wouldn't you agree? I thought you might. Well today's bouquet of Can-con clips has a distinct Maritime flavour, with two from Halifax-based acts and another from PEI. To complement those, we have two from Upper Canada, specifically your favorite mega-metropolis and mine: Toronto. P-E-Islanders Raccoon Bandit came to our attention when were compiling our PEI mixtape, and so we were happy to check out their video for Hat , which is a fun automated-band [...]

Yes, you read that right. It's not a Best-of list because if herohill has proved anything in our six or seven years of existence, it's that we don't often sync up with the masses and despite our great efforts, not many people really gravitate towards Canadian content, especially the acts we seem to love. So when you look at the list and start to disagree, to quote Rob Base, "you don't like it, so what, I don't care." Obviously, we want to turn you on to a few new bands, but we can't hit the mark with everyone. [...]

Last night, the herohill showcase went down at The Seahorse tavern here in Halifax, and of course we were on the scene. Like any night during the Halifax Pop Explosion, there is always competition for crowds, as at any time there are multiple excellent options, many within walking distance of each other. However, in my humble, the folks who stuck around for the entire evening were treated to a pretty excellent show. York Redoubt, The Got To Get Got, Valleys, and Bruce Peninsula all put in great sets. Of course I had planned to [...]

Today's song has been stuck in my head for at least a week now, which typically indicates that it is ready to be posted. Gettin' Dirty in the Afterlife is from the Halifax, Nova Scotia indie-rock band The Got To Get Got and their debut full-length release Sahalee . Sahalee boasts a very impressive supporting cast, including appearances from Warren Spicer of Plants and Animals and Jennifer Mecija/Anissa Hart of Ohbijou . To preview more tunes from the album, check out the band's MySpace here , or pickup the entire album from [...]

With CBC threatening to cancel the 5 PM airing of the Simpson, it only seems fitting that I run a Simpsons inspired "clip-show" style post trying to bring some shine to local artists. It's been an impressive year already and with Rich Aucoin, Jon McKiel and Ruth Minnikin all holding finished records in their respective vaults, we obviously aren't done yet. Obviously, record like Joel Plaskett , Classified and Jenn Grant would be standing high on this list, but if you are from Halifax and reading a music blog, chances are you already [...]

On a post-it note burried under several other post-it notes that scatter the outside of my monitor I had written TGTGG. I had no idea what this ment until I got an email from Matt at Pigeon Row letting me know that The Got To Get Got are releasing their first full length this week. Sometimes when I hear a band I like, I write their name on a sticky and post it somewhere on my desk so that I will remember to look them up. I guess I heard TGTGG before and liked them. [...]

Mark Mullane The term indie is an unrepresentative term to 99% of the music listening public, but whenever I hear a band described as "indie", I think they must sound like Sebadoh, Unrest, Superchunk or Pavement. For me, it's a descriptor that has no relation to what the band's status [...]
The Got to Get Got Genre: Pop Halifax, Nova Scotia Sample Track: Rattle Off The Got To Get Got release their debut LP, Sahalee (Noyes Records), on Tuesday, July 14. The band is led by Mark Mullane and started as a bi-coastal collective (with outlets operating simultaneously in Halifax, NS [...]

As regular readers can probably attest to, we focus on the folk, hip-hop, alt-country and noise scenes here in Halifax. It's not that we don't like pop music, it's just rare that we stumble across terrific pop artists. Tear in your beer anthems and pedal effects seem to take precedence over smiles and melody, but the sprawling pop sounds of The Got To Get Got are fixing to change things. Led by North of America 's Mark Mullane , the coast-to-coast collective trimmed down to it's fighting weight for their debut full length [...]

I haven't had a lot of time to download any new music lately, since the majority of my time on my computer has been spent just attempting to get it running smoothly, but here's a few tracks to tide you over until - well, Wednesday at least. And the fact that it's wet and cold outside and there's a wintry mix to the tunes is only a mere coincidence, I assure you. Yes, I do wish there were still autumns in NJ, instead of a switch directly from summer to winter, but sadly, that is no [...]

Blowout version. The new Radiohead album is only available at their website , and it's free - or close to it, although you can pay whatever you want for it. The songs are only 160kps, so if that matters to you, wait to buy the actual CD (coming out in January) or spring for the $80 box set (coming out in December). Either way, I'd love to say it's a great new album, but I'm not feeling it yet. There are a few good songs, though, including this one. [...]
One of the bonuses of covering the Halifax Pop Explosion is that it gives us an opportunity to talk about some Canadian bands that we haven't covered on the hill before. Especially when there's a local connection, and there's no band more locally connected to the hill than The Got To Get Got . Formed last year by two former members of North Of America, Mark Mullane and Mark Colavecchia, TGTGG has connections to Vancouver, Toronto, and Halifax. It seems the band was hatched whilst Mullane was in Vancouver for a work contract and sleeping on [...]

I fucking love discovering new bands. Co-running this great blog has helped for sure, but just being a rock snob in general has helped me sift through the massive piles of shit that is popular music today to discover some super-duper unknown bands. A couple of weeks ago I stumbled across a short-but-sweet EP by a band called The Got To Get Got . I flew through it a few times and it grabbed me pretty quickly. When I heard the last minute and a half of "Blood Test" the second time I nearly fucking lost it. Wow, that [...]
