Over its 17 years, the festival has swollen to 7 days of concerts (ranging from cozy church acoustic sets to sprawling punk moshing at Yonge and Dundas Square), films (mostly music-centric documentaries, including this year's highly touted Better Than Something: Jay Reatard ) and interactive conferences (if you were a musician and could get advice from Brian Wilson, wouldn't you?). Facebook Beirut and Owen Pallett have a pretty long and storied history together, with the former enlisting the latter to arrange and add strings and things to their last full-length, 20072s The Flying Club Cup , as well as take lead vocals on the song "Cliquot" while the latter while still operating as Final Fantasy enlisted members of Beirut to play on his Spectrum, 14th Century EP. So yes, hardly strangers. But even so it still counts as an [...]

It's Thursday, so how about a serving of videos from your friends here at the hill? Upon going over the four videos I compiled for this edition of the Video Hits, it almost seems as though my subconscious was on the hunt for some peppy, spring-like music. Or maybe I just went with the videos that I hand on hand, who knows? But let's do this. If you're like me, when you see a song by "The Russian Futurists featuring Ruth Minnikin", your first reaction is one of surprise as you might not [...]

Photograph by Jill Willcott February 22, 2011 - After that Grammy win, it’s a pity this year’s Polaris Prize will likely go to Arcade Fire by default, but there have already been several amazing Canadian albums released this year and Hey Rosetta! has joined them with Seeds . The East Coast band's third album manages to elevate them beyond simply being just a rock band with a string section to something more. With fellow Newfoundlanders Gramercy Riffs in tow, the band played a sold out show at London, Ontario's Call the Office. Gramercy Riffs [...]

by teepoo Originally from Newfoundland, Gramercy Riffs now finds residency in Toronto. Their catchy as hell hooks that are only made possible by their strong female vocals. Take a listen to Oh Linda! off their album It's Heartbreak . Don't you just love the end hook that makes you wanting more? Gramercy Riffs- Oh Linda! OFFICIAL SITE | MYSPACE | OFFICIAL SITE

Naja, [...]

Yikes! 2010 is almost coming to an end! Getting close to the Top 10 on the Best of 2010 Canadian albums. Doing alot of decision on who to put in this list. This might be a surprise for some that I put some albums off the Top 10. Hope you will like this list. Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record Its been five years since the big Toronto indie [...]

New Music | Gramercy Riffs Melismatic female vocals, adult pop-rock... I thought my girlfriend would definitely be into this, but she thinks it's 'squawky'. I think it's Fleetwood-Mackian brilliance from the Riffs' debut, "It's Heartbreak". "Call Me" opens with a particularly strong guitar-based namesame. Loverly. Gramercy Riffs - Call Me

Frank Yang I guess the final day of coverage is as good a time as any to talk about some of the non- Pop Explosion aspects of my visit to Halifax, which was my first-ever visit to the east coast and first trip within Canada in over three years. Though to be honest, I didn't do a whole lot that wasn't HPX-related - some wandering around downtown Halifax, which seemed to be in a particularly epic state of construction and/or renovation, the previously mentioned fast/walkabout to Point Pleasant, and most enjoyably a visit to [...]

Jess Baumung By the standards of the inherently attention deficient internet, a year can be an eternity - so it's remarkable that Diamond Rings has not only managed to sustain the interest that began last Summer with the release of his debut single "All Yr Songs", but steadily build it on both sides of the Atlantic with just three singles and accompanying videos. While it took those at home a little while to comprehend that this wasn't just the guy from local rockers The D'Urbervilles in eyeshadow, those abroad [...]
It's been a long, hot week. Here's some new tunes to cool off with. Except for the Cap'n Jazz track (circa '94) who I'm missing tonight in SF. Damnit. Enjoy thoroughly. Leg Sweeper “Sexy Weekend” Gramercy Riffs “The Freezedown” from It’s Heartbreak Cap’n Jazz “Oh Messy Life” from Burritos, Inspiration Point, Fork Balloon Sports, Cards In The Spokes, Automatic Biographies, Kites, Kung Fu, Trophies, Banana Peels We've Slipped On, And Egg Shells We've Tippy Toed Over [...]

It was the first night of the i(heart)music festival at Mavericks. The turnout was not what I expected it. But I was happy to see all four acts playing one great show on Thursday night. It was also a last show for this Ottawa band (which I decided to take a Polaroid). Centretown Cripplers started off the set. It was fun and loud as always. Straight forward set. Still can't believe it is their last show as a band. [...]

Not gonna lie. This band caught my eye because their name references one of the best movies on my DVD shelf: The Warriors. The Riffs don't exactly "come out to play-ay," but they do know how to pen a decent tune. Great drums, some faint keys, and strong female vocals highlight the gradual build "Oh, Linda" makes until it hits a catchy-as-hell ending. I can't say I really relate to the lyrics "all I ever wanted was for somebody to come break my heart out," but I can't deny their repeatability. Check the track [...]
You'll swear you've heard the songs on It's Heartbreak before. They'll instantly sound familiar, and in just a listen or two, you'll probably feel as if the debut album from Newfoundland-to-Toronto transplants Gramercy Riffs has been in your record collection for years. Perhaps it's because the songs were co-written by Mara Pellerin and Lee Hanlon while she was at home in St. John's and he was studying in Germany that these songs feel like they've traveled across a great divide-in space and time-to arrive as a perfectly formed collection of rock/pop songs.
