For the 6 million-plus folks living in South Florida, finding a music festival to call one's own has been a losing proposition. The ill-fated Langerado bounced around to several locations before succumbing to the Great Recession . Repeated attempts to bring Langerado back have languished . However, a new festival is making a strong bid to correct all that. The Virginia Key Grassroots Festival features an eclectic, foot-stomping lineup for February 9th through [...]

"Early season riding and times of low snowpack have had a major influence on why and how we surf the pow. This season has been particularly [...]
The Explorers Club unveil the lead single off their upcoming full-length Grand Hotel, which already sounds like one of 2012's best. Stream it inside
Around a month ago, I was told The Explorers Club would be releasing their first new material in over four years. Freedom Wind, their 2008 debut, has been a personal favorite of mine since its release, and I assumed the band had split after years of inactivity. So when frontman Jason Brewer e-mailed me last
Many of us have a sweet spot for The Beach Boys, or most Brian Wilson recordings for that matter. While their early – and generally most popular – hits are not to be overlooked, the greatness of the group fully emerged with the 1965 release of Today!. This classic marks the beautiful crevice between early [...]
Earmilk Streets is how you get involved. Consider this your official invitation to get milky & get connected. We've officially moved to a street level takeover with the empire spreading across North America. And as with any proper imperial occupation, we need soldiers - but great power comes great responsibility. A responsibility to spread the word of milk and a duty to accept discounts, gear, and of course all vip access to Earmilk events. Over the past two to three years almost every major brand, company and service that I can think of is investing their time and money into music and I welcome it as any and all interest in what some say is a ' dying industry ' is surely a positive. Nike's concept space in Shoreditch called 1948 laid host to a fortnight of music-centric BBQ sessions titled Grass Roots which managed to squeeze in just before the end of the so called British 'summer'. The first event featured sets from Hudson Mohawke and Raffertie whilst Blood [...]

Nike and Arsenal FC have set the pre-carnival ball rolling when they play host to a summer BBQ and night of forward thinking music at 1948, Shoreditch. 'Continuing to celebrate the football clubs 125th Anniversary, 'Grassroots' is a fortnight of boundary pushing beats and events, with tonight being hosted by Radio 1 DJ, Deviation overlord and Gunner Benji B. The first event will be held tonight, and is headlined by none other than turntable prodigy Hudson Mowhawke. 'Satin Panthers' can be counted as some of his most commanding and significant work yet, and fits aesthetic of the [...]
Photo by B FRESHMaria Isa has been slowly leaking tracks off her new mixtape, Sip It Vol. 1 (you may remember when she called out Michele Bachmann on her track "Esto Suena"), and today's track starts

The month was overshadowed by the death of Amy Winehouse . But the Grim Reaper took some people on whom greater attention would not have been wasted. For example, Chic's keyboard man Raymond Jones died at the age of 53 of pneumonia; the same illness that took fellow Chic member Bernie Edwards 15 years ago. Also departing on the soul train this month was Fonce Mizell, who with his brother Larry produced acts such as L.T.D., Taste of Honey, The Blackbyrds, Brenda Lee Eager and The Rance Allen Group, and on his own produced that golden run of Jackson [...]
Canada's homegrown bands like MCM rocked the July 23, 2011 Rhythm of the Rock Music Festival.

If the call letters WFIL and WIBG bring a slight pang to your middle-aged heart, chances are you know Rob Grill's voice, which was silenced Monday at aged 67. It was Grill's voice that pushed The Grass Roots bubbly, dancey bubblegum folk to the top of the charts. To a 12 year old shrimp who didn't know about the Summer of Love, Bob Dylan or the burgeoning influence of FM radio, it was 560 or 990 on the AM dial that ruled the day. The Grass Roots, along with other great AM singles bands of the late 60's/early [...]
Filed under: News , R.I.P. Bobby Bank, WireImage Rob Grill, the former singer and bassist for rock group the Grass Roots , died Monday, July 11, in a hospice facility near Orlando, Fla. As CBS reports, he had reportedly been in a coma after a recent fall and had been suffering from prior health problems, including a stroke. He was 67. Raised in Hollywood, Calif., Grill's career in music began when he [...]

From the always excellent site Willard's Wormholes , comes sad news that The Grass Roots' singer/bassist Rob Grill is in a coma and not expected to survive. One of the great "singles bands" from the 60's, The Grass Roots have had a lasting legacy, with cover versions of their songs done by such alt legends as The Replacements, and Stiv Bator's Lord's Of The New Church. The "walking bass line" on "Midnite Confessions" has always been a source of amazement for me. [...]

By Jon Stone I've been thinking about late-night sets all day. Bonnaroo is famous for them, but seriously, I don't see how people manage. Like tonight, there's some really cool stuff going on at, like, two and three in the morning. I'm convinced that only the very young, the completely wasted, and those who can sleep somewhere with air conditioning stay out all night. Which is really too bad. I would have loved to see Ratatat last night but they went on at three. On the other hand, Weezy had us all up that late anyway. [...]

By Jon Stone I'm driving out to Bonnaroo on Wednesday to participate again in the great outdoor music fesitval paradox. I mean, of course, the incredible experience of seeing band after band that you love paired with hour after hour of high temperatures, humidity, sun exposure and standing fatigue. I've packed my sunscreen though, as well as a nice wide-rimmed hat, and am even growing a little hipster mustache so as to fit in with the natives. All in all, I'm really excited to be in Tennessee with my brother for the weekend and have here [...]

by Jon Stone | @jwstone I got a speeding ticket when I was about five miles from Three Sisters Park , the site just north of Peoria, IL where Summer Camp Music Festival has been held every year for the past ten. I was going nine over the posted 45-miles-per-hour speedlimit but there was a nice little stretch of road along the Illinois river and I was gazing out over it wondering what to expect from the weekend. A few minutes into the traffic stop, I was informed by the officer [...]

By Jon Stone | @jwstone grass|roots ep. 9 When I first started writing the grass|roots column last year, it was with the admission of my limited knowledge in the "genre" and that part of my interest in writing about the genre is the way that one great discovery leads to the next. Though I have learned a lot since then about the tradition (I've even begun research for a dissertation that focuses on the rhetoric of traditional American music), this principle remains true. Case in point: A few nights ago, [...]
Nothing too profound today (unlike normal days when my profundity is breathtaking to behold) but I did want to report that I'm starting to get that feeling of unease that occurs every year about this time. You know the one I mean - fear of the rapidly growing grass and subsequent lawn care. Regular readers will remember that I've written about it before, but if you want to catch up a little you can look at this previous post , one of several that have touched on my phobia. Anyhow, I [...]

By Jon Stone | @jwstone grass|roots ep. 7 The year is fading quickly. Soon you will be bombarded with lists a plenty, including several here, declaring the top ArcadeKanyeNationalSufjan records of the year. Before that, however, I wanted to throw down a final four records from 2010 that fit somewhere within the wide net I've been calling grass|roots. Each of these bands/artists put out great records this year that, I would guess, have been largely overlooked in mainstream circles. Ease into the first day back from turkey by getting acquainted [...]
