Fort Worth singer-songwriter Clint Niosi, 33, works in the basement of a community college library doing on-site tech support and on-call tutoring. This does not sound fascinating, and I quickly ... Continue reading "Singer Clint Niosi is Grateful for his Boring Job" >
RR It’s Friday afternoon and we had a holiday in the middle of the week so it’s almost like we started this week TWICE. Now I’m thrilled it’s about to be over and, going into this weekend, I wanted to share 4 songs I’m loving that make a perfect soundtrack for a variety of summer activities. *Get up early and do something you’ve never done before. Courtesy of Matt and Kim. Their new track “ Let’s Go ” in an insta-party and a great motivator to [...]

My round up of the tracks that I haven't had the space to post is a little late this week. Don't worry normal service will resume next week ... Protocol Afro From: Jakarta, Indonesia [...]

Shown Above: Dominique Pruitt Well, let me start this week's list by saying IT'S SO FREAKING HOT! I mean, really. I thought Hell froze over, for Pete's sake. I love the summer, don't get me wrong, but this is pure torture. You cannot function in this much heat and therefore I'm sending out my excessive heat warning: Do not leave your home unless you absolutely have to. Hydrate yourself, your elderly, and your children (pets included). Most importantly, keep your indoor activities lively with this kicking list of the 10 most notable artists [...]

The first part of our Maps & Atlases session went up last week and involved the band playing a stripped-back version of Fever from their stunning new album Beware & Be Grateful (review here ). We're now very pleased to bring you the second part of our session which features this brilliant and funky-as-hell version of Winter, also taken from the new record , in all its finger-tapping glory. If you missed the first part of the session then check it out below but first [...]

The arc of Maps & Atlases’ musical evolution is something one can only describe as “drastic.” A series of initial EPs sounded like your average math rock band. That is to say: niche. Very good, to be sure. But listenable to a certain sub-section of a sub-section of music fan. Then came their first full-length album, Perch Patchwork , where the math-rock sound was tempered, though not extinguished, by the band’s newfound pop sensibilities. Keeping that arc in mind, Beware and Be Grateful , the band’s newest release, paints a picture of where the [...]

Since their formation in 2004, Chicago four-piece Maps & Atlases have musically morphed and mutated in multiple ways. Both sonically and technically, their 10-track second long player Beware and Be Grateful marks a stark contrast from their finger-tapping math influenced EPs and even deviates from their perfectly formed 2009 debut album Perch Patchwork . In many ways the title’s use of "Beware" inadvertently signals a sentiment which many existing fans might share. While it’s undeniably a Maps & Atlases record – there’s no mistaking Dave Davison’s astonishing yet abrasive falsetto vocals and the kinetic glide [...]

This week sees the release of Beware and Be Grateful , the new LP from Chicago quartet Maps & Atlases. The record marks a subtle shift in their sound, with the always-compelling band adding a good chunk of heart and soul into proceedings creating a record that manages to be intriguing, instantly danceable and rather damn beautiful all at the same time. We've loved the band since their (completely perfect) early EP's, so it was something of an honour to be able to film a session with them as they landed upon UK [...]

The Grates - Sweet Dreams

Monday, December 12, 2011 After a number of fruitless years, the experimental collective known as NewVillager finally made their proper introduction this past year in a self-titled work that’s bypassed the difficult and seemingly impossible act of capturing a concept. The album manages to illustrate the creativity of the very group that produced it, and it’s an imaginative journey that captivated me from the start. : NewVillager - Lighthouse : [...]
The Grates do some pretty accessible indie pop music. I use to love 19 20 20 a few years back. The new stuff is good...but it doesn't make me want to go out and grab it. Then came Sydney lass Whyte Fang. She's gone and messed with 5 tracks from The Grates. And yikes. It's [...]

Mr. Dream play Consequence of Sound's party at The Southpaw. Photo by Jeremy D. Larson There's musical signs of life every night in NYC, as the locals are exceedingly quick to tell you. "Well, this is basically just like every night in NYC, so I don't see what the big deal is about CMJ." In spite of how insufferable that was to hear like four to five times a day, CMJ was indeed something special especially when you have that many signs of life coming together in one area to "showcase" their talent at "parties". [...]
