A year and a half after he escaped from Los Angeles, Steve Cooper and Spirit Animal are finishing up a follow-up album to 20102s "The Cost of Living." Thankfully, the testosterone-charged electro-funk outfit seems to have decided against the title "Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species Spirit Animal," instead settling on "Spiritia Animalia." Whatever its taxonomic rank, Spirit Animal's marriage of funky beats and Cooper's soaring croon is sure to leave sweat on your brow, and the band's penchant for wry, subversive humor makes their music valued-added. ||| Download: "Crocodile Skins" [...]
Since he forsook Los Angeles for New York City last year, Steve Cooper — the man we first knew as the Gray Kid and who was last spotted dazzling us in the kitchen — released "The Cost of Living," the first album from his electro-funk party band Spirit Animal . The first single, "Ant!," offered undeniable dancefloor nourishment; the second, "Makin' It Work," is a synth-y riff on making something work, which, by and large, Spirit Animal's eclectic mix of soul and electronica does. Cooper has also been busy in the remix field, [...]

||| Download: "Buzzsicle 33 I originally created Buzzsicle 3 for a special promotion, and ... well, it's a long story, but I never posted it until now. It's an hour's worth of music featuring 15 songs by L.A. artists Red Cortez, Spider Problem, the Yelling, Greyboy, the Gray Kid, Keenhouse, NightWaves, Shiloe, Robotanists, His Orchestra, Fool's Gold, Secret Dakota Ring, Intricate Machines, West Indian Girl and DeccaTree. When the Gray Kid isn't manning up in the kitchen or hanging with Daniel Baldwin , the L.A. soul man is busy finishing up "The Cost of Living," his first album with the band he has assembled, Spirit Animal . In the meantime, he recently loaded up his website with enough complimentary music to make your hard drive dance. Newest is "Free Music," a six-track EP produced by the Kid, Computer Jay and Detroit production team the Amps. Deeper on the website is a trove of just about everything the Gray Kid has done [...]
Gray Kid was one of the FIRST artists that I posted on this blog when I started last summer. I was waiting on his album to be released since then and when I tried looking up release dates...NADA. Well, looks like he's handing out a few tracks for free, so go to his site and [...]
Two artists on the opposite end of their career trajectories, so-to-speak, posted some new tunes I think you should check out. Bobby D posted "Feel A Change Comin' On" via Newsweek's website , of all places. It appears only available via stream, for now, until someone smarter and more patient than I figures out how to extract the MP3. VIMBY homie The Gray Kid also just put up some cool new tracks via his website. Those you can download here . Download/stream/enjoy, then jump over to the [...]

Shows are usually pretty limited over the winter, especially on weekdays. Following the trend, this week is a little light. Most being one city stops, but with some definite highlights. My Brightest Diamond (photo from r5productions ) Tuesday In my opinion, Rachael Yamagata is under-appreciated. She creates elegant melodies and well-textured songs. When I first saw her perform, it was in 2004. She was a better version of Fiona Apple and her latest album [...]
I don't know if this is common of my generation, but when I'm bored I do a lot of wikipediaing. Today I wound up on the 30 Rock entry and remembered this fantastic track that's used in the episode "The Source Awards." The only thing is that it's jazzed up with a piano backing in [...]

Oliver Future - credit We're having a small Los Angeles invasion this week. As a joint bill, The Gray Kid and Oliver Future are coming to the region for a couple of dates, before they continue their tours apart. The Gray Kid is best described as indie rap/soul and is known for infectious live shows. Oliver Future is more straight forward indie rock, but they have some some serious layering and include elements of electronica. 9/12/07: DC9 , DC 9/13/07: Sonar , Baltimore 9/14/07: Northstar , [...]

I'm here, stupid inhaler in hand, wishing I was at the album release party for The Gray Kid who released his newest album Vultures today. It's a superb album...complex and rich in sound, it makes you want to hear every layer of what you are listening to. The music is inspired by the play Phaedra's Love by Sarah Kane . A tragic story behind the play and it's author, and tragically for us, until legal issues are dealt with, we won't be able to experience a performance. But what you will experience [...]
The Gray Kid - Death of a Boy (feat. Chris Garneau) I just got back from the lake. My belly is sunburned and my hair is still a little wet and I feel like a million dollars. I'm going to stretch out in the surprsingly cool furnished basement in my parent's house, like I used to when I was little. This seems pretty much perfect right now. The sun was high, the clouds were white and fluffy, the lake calm and quiet, the water refreshingly cool. We spent all day out there, and it was amazing. And now, I'm going...

The Gray Kid - Lonely Love Today's pick comes from a real character. This CD snuck into my listening pile, snuck its way to the top, infiltrated iTunes, and clocked in damn near the top (no one can touch Van She!) of the frequently-listened-to list, Ides of March edition. It's not hard to see why when you give his current/debut CD ...5, 6, 7, 8 a whirl. A quick note to haters - yes, this guy is empirically a white emcee. But his rap game falls way outside of either cliché indie hip-hop, or even hiphop as an entire...
