Why so serious, G? We're in a depression. Fuck what the media tells you. What do they know? Fear gets higher ratings. I cannot solve all of your problems at once, but I can try and make you laugh. Here are 5 creative ways to find a job in 2011 that you might not have thought of. 1. Offer sexual services. One blow job for a steady paycheck. You do the math. 2. Use all caps in your cover letter. The HR drone who processes the paperwork will probably throw your resume in the garbage, but it [...]

I waited much longer than I'd initially planned to write this. An album like Terius Nash 's 1977 (the first for The–Dream to release under his real name, given out as a free download last week) needs time to sink in. It's everything that R&B should be; complex, boiling over with emotion that angers, moves you, sucks you into its tangled net, and makes you feel as though these situations are your own. It's convincing, stripped down and vulnerable to the point of being uncomfortable. It is definitely not the work [...]

Ever wondered if it's possible for depression and anguish to have a very distinct sound? If you have you'll be pleased to know that Robyn G Shiels has decided to prove that it can with his latest EP The Great Depression . What may surprise you, though, is just how beautiful it is. From the moment he opens the EP a capella for lead track When We Were Brothers the sense of torment begins in a way that is relaxed, to the point where he sounds like someone who is completely resigned to his place [...]

"You're nuts." Crooks was scornful. "I seen hundreds of men come by on the road an' on the ranches, with their bindles on their back an' that same damn thing in their heads. Hundreds of them. They come, an' they quit an' go on; an' every damn one of 'em's got a little piece of land in his head. An' never a God damn one of 'em ever gets it. Just like heaven. Ever'body wants a little piece of lan'. I read plenty of books out there. Nobody ever gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land. It's just in [...]

Robert Pattinson , Reese Witherspoon , and Christopher Waltz star in Water for Elephants which will hit theaters April 15th 2011. Here's a first look at the stars in character. The image comes from the inside sleeve of the latest edition of the book by Sara Gruen . Pattinson plays Jacob , a young veterinarian who joins a traveling circus to tend to it's animals. While there, he meets Witherspoon's character [...]
It's a curious combination of musical styles that Common Grackle have going on here. It's by no means unique but it's by all means refreshing, a hybrid between Indie-Dance-Folk and brooding comedic Hip-Hop; their debut album "The Great Depression" is a joyride through clever penmanship and infectious choruses that'll remind you of Elliott Smith's sombre atmospheric masterpiece that is "From A Basement On A Hill". They're not taking themselves too seriously though, with songs like "At The Grindcore Show" where they sing a piano ballad about not wanting to die "at the grindcore show" and describing the different kinds of [...]
The Library of Congress has released nearly 1,600 color photos from the final year of the Great Depression. The photos depict a very different image of that era . Instead of destituition and poverty-stricken sharecroppers waiting in bread lines, etc., instead we're treated to "tired-but-satisfied homesteaders and freshly-scrubbed children performing in a school pageant. For recreation, there are square dances and state fairs, with attractions that look startlingly familiar. In short, it is a world that is more frugal than today's America, but not necessarily less joyful."
Trigger The Bloodshed TBC Metal Blade/Rising Records Late Spring 2010 What they're saying In a blog over on their MySpace page, Trigger The Bloodshed have spoken out about their forthcoming third album: "So far, drums and guitars have been completely finished and are sounding the tits! Vocals are being recording as I'm writing this very blog! "We are [...]

New York City is wrestling with raging unemployment caused by the worst recession since the Great Depression. What's Brooklyn's self-promoting Borough President Marty Markowitz doing about it? Well, the media loving Markowitz has proclaimed August 29th Michael Jackson Day to honor the late King of Pop, who would've turned 51 this month. Jackson, who will finally be laid to rest on his birthday, will be remembered at a block party in Ft. Greene Park organized and hosted by filmmaker/New York Knicks fanatic Spike Lee , with DJ Spinna playing all things Jacko on the wheels of steel. It [...]
Don't you just love the smell of co-operation in the morning? Well, it certainly beats the smell of festival toilets, which was unfortunately where at the Download Festival last month that Thrash Hits cornered those rising stars of UK death metal, Trigger The Bloodshed , for an exclusive video interview on behalf of those erudite chaps over at MetalSucks.net . If you don't know what MetalSucks.net is, then shame on you - they're in our blogroll . For the last two and a [...]

Image From Here It is so easy for me, these days, to escape from everything. To hide from the world. It's the disease I have that controls me and it causes me to want to escape from it all. I sleep excessively every day and then spend my waking time fighting this nasty illness. The drugs work a little but they do not help me like they should. Escaping is my only real coping mechanism. And it is not really a healthy one. But, it is the only way I can get through this life [...]

Midway through her set at Club Passim last Friday, right before covering Woody Guthrie's "Deportee," Antje Duvekot remarked on something she'd read about the Great Depression. "Lighthearted entertainment became important to people," said the Somerville-based singer-songwriter. "They needed it to get them through it." A beat of silence, and then laughter rose from the crammed, brick-walled, basement folk club. The unstated punch line of Duvekot's self-depreciating joke had been made evident by the first half of her show, the second of four sold-out gigs promoting her just-released second studio album, The Near Demise of the High Wire [...]

I got this 3 track promo of the single taken from the new album 'Forever Altered' . I was quite impressed with the title single but it was one of the other songs 'Ill Prepared' which really lit a fire in me. Speaking of Tom Vek, the track did remind me a little of his works and also had some of the epic-ness of the great indie bands like Interpol. There's a really spacey vibe to 'A Pale Light' that works really well, but in terms of pure [...]

I'm not going to deny it. I'm not going to hide it. As all of you can plainly see, there are now two advertisements on this page. That number will probably increase in the future. I've always sworn that I would not stoop so low as to place ads on my page, but...let's face it, my job doesn't exactly pay the bills. If I'm to afford rent every month, I need some secondary (or tertiary) methods of income. I've already receved many wonderful donations from you readers, so I'm not going to take that route again. My last option (technically [...]
Just an FYI—Christmas in July will start on July 21. Until then, we'll do a little warm-up with some posts. First up, the always light-hearted Great Depression. Lately, it's been near impossible to turn on the television and not hear about oil, subprime mortgages, and corporations on the brink of failure. Our rebate checks, courtesy Uncle Sam, arrived in the mail—did it make a dent for anyone?
