Just a quick note to let everyone know that two rock bands I adore - Jones Street Station (pictured above) and Great Divide - will be playing at DC9 tomorrow night (Thursday, Aug. 25th!). Be there or be square and if you don't live in the DC area, I'll be posting pictures and a show recap, so keep your eyes peeled for that.
When it comes to lineup announcements, some festivals go for the big reveal. Others, like this year's North Coast , chose the Chinese water torture method of announcing their roster. The Chicago, IL-based festival, set to run September 2-4 in Union Park, followed up an eclectic initial list of names for this year's shindig with an equally diverse round of additions. Joining the likes of David Guetta, Wiz Khalifa, Thievery Corportation, Common, Lotus, Gogol Bordello, and Neon Indian will be Fat Boy Slim, ATB, Bassnectar, Major Lazer, of Montreal, and The Budos Band. Also included [...]

Hear The Track HereLike newspapers, you learn to read between the internet lines to get to the root of things. Regardless of the amount of crap that is out there on the internet, there is no doubt that it is the foremost tool if you want to know something about pretty much anything. Writing as much I do, I actually get to do some serious research from time to time, triggered by either the track

The Great Divide is a roots rock band that sounds a lot like New Monsoon with a brass and woodwinds section. Founded in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the members share a wide variety of influences, including funk, country, blues, reggae and rock. Their debut full length Reservoir is an aptly titled collection of songs showing all those genres, messing them up and lcoking back inot the groove - and all of it is delivered with confidence. Vocalist and songwriter Teddy Grossman has enough power to float on top of the heavy instrumentation, [...]

All geared up for the sweet seventeen edition of Wild Weekend? Good. The ghost in the iPod has made its choices, and diversity´s the word once again. Some reggae, some jazz, a weird cover and a lovely tribute. Plus a very recent track from a band called Great Divide and an oldie from the Captain himself. "What's the meaning of this? Poor Harry, I guess..." Been awhile since we enjoyed any Don Van Vliet magic around here, so I´m glad the lovely Harry Irene - a duo that lived in [...]
Last night I trekked over to Union Hall to catch Brooklyn sci-fi string maestros Miracles of Modern Science. First up was Great Divide, a band that's currently spread all over the country but was started at University of Michigan. They started the night off right with some awesome high energy tunes that had everyone dancing. Their sound spanned funk, blues, and country rock, and sometimes was an
VNV Nation is a band that members Ronan Harris and Mark Jackson formed in Wexford and London. They released their breakthrough album "Empires" in 1999. Ten years, a move to Hamburg, Germany and 4 studio albums later the duo are still at it, combining a diverse collection of industrial beats, synths, and orchestral structures to create their inspiring work. Thier latest work Of Faith, Power and Glory is a collection of powerful emotion channeled through old school synth pop, industrial, and electro. The raw emotion and hope of the song The Great Divide , [...]

This Mornin'... favorite Mike McClure has been busy recording music lately. Both for himself and for other bands. Mike has made available a Boohatch Records Sampler . The disc includes songs from some of his recent productions including: Jessey Thompson, Shut Down Town, Fat Dixie, Willie Stradlin', and Little Ray. Also featured on the set are two songs from Mike himself. The new rocker, Deviants , and a re-imagined Great Divide tune, Nowhere Woman . The decision to re-record this epic tune came after a cry of popular demand in the comments of his [...]

The Great Divide: Mr. Devil [ purchase ] Following in boyhowdy's path to redemption, here is another uplifting, gospel-tinged song referencing the devil. Mike McClure has always had a strong gospel influence to his music – in fact, i did an entire McClure gospel post here. Mr. Devil was recorded back in Mike's Great Divide days on the album Revolutions. Mike attempts to ward off Satan by letting him know that he has recently found Jesus and "laid [his] burdens down." "You have tried my faith, and [...]

i've just about finished going through the hundreds of pictures taken while in Costa Rica. If you like a laid-back place with lots to do, and some of the most amazing scenery - get your ass to Costa Rica. The locals are super-friendly, everyone accepts the American dollar, cabs and vans are cheap and plentiful, and - according to our driver, César - every town, no matter how small, has at least one bar, and one soccer field. They got their priorities lined up down there. So to show off my newfound hobby of photography [...]

Sometimes the full breadth of a great artist's talent isn't recognized until their demise. Of course there are/were people along the way that fully understood the presence they were in. i'm here today to make sure that doesn't happen with Mike McClure . In my circle of friends, as well as in the right circles within the Texas Music/Red Dirt scene, Mike is considered a genre pioneer, a captivating songwriter, an inventive guitarist, and hopefully soon enough - a legend. Mike honed his musical chops with the successful Stillwater, OK band [...]

i've had a Gospel playlist on my iPod for quite some time now. There's something really special about music in general, but add some uplifting lyrics inspired by The Man and you get something really moving. There's one guy ultimately responsible for me becoming interested in this spiritually-rooted music (well, aside from Him of course) - Mike McClure. It most likely started after i got The Great Divide project Dirt and Spirit - a Red Dirt compilation disc of Gospel tunes: [...]

Okay, i'm not really - i procrastinate with the best of 'em - but i'm trying to talk myself into becoming a good student. Just for like the next 2 months. Then no more school. Ever. i know it's been a while since my last post, but i've just had no time. The plan was to catch up on school work during Spring Break, but Vegas and a few days back home totally nullified any chances of that happening. This week i've got 2 (late) midterms and then there's that online class i [...]
