As followers of our Twitter are more than aware, Kenny Bloggins has been straight fiendin' the past few weeks. It's probably been annoying as all hell, and I suppose I'm somewhat sorry. But not really - the final season of LOST begins tonight, and we are throwin' down. In the traditional way this blog celebrates all the stupid shit going on in my life, it seemed necessary to throw a Super Swingin' Mix in your vicinity. And hey, it also can serve as sort of a peace offering for my general numberskullery and insolence. So... all the songs below relate [...]
![The Great Northwest: The Widespread Reign Of… [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1837657_lg.jpg)
I'm becoming quite fond of The Kora Records . With only about a dozen releases under their belt, they've already established themselves as a powerfully unique label with an eye for great talent. They've released phenomenal records by The LK (bringing the Swedish duo over to the US release of their debut LP), a few by Meredith Bragg , and the amazing Gregor Samsa . Like the Meredith Bragg and Gregor Samsa acts, The Widespread Reign Of... by The Great Northwest sides [...]

honestly, me thinks 2008 was a ho-hum year in music. there were a lot of records that it initially got me all hot, but ended up just giving me musical blue balls. there was a lot of killer, but too much filler to carry me through and through. that being so, i think i could have compiled a pretty solid top 20, if i had the energy or time or patience to do so. each of my picks in my top ten serves a specific purpose for my ever challenged soul. if you have been following me for [...]

I want to talk about my email for a sec [kb (at) thedecibeltolls.com]. Chuck Klosterman once said that music critique is basically being paid to read your mail. That's pretty accurate, and in many ways, that was the largest chunk of my job as a talent buyer at the music venue. I miss doing such work, despite the funky hours, so I enjoy getting mail from publicists and label reps. These letters provide two outcomes, depending on if the publicist is good at his/her job: 1) point you in the direction of artists that will pique your interest, or [...]
(No Ratings Yet) Loading ... Spazi incontaminati. Io vi sento solo nei miei sogni. Siete disperati mentre batto i piedi sulla sabbia. Le mani affogate [...]
They all were at the top of my list of things to check out from messages received in my inbox but going even deeper, there is a connection with Passion Pit and YELLE as Passion Pit is opening for YELLE, the french new wave gal that's got all the boys in a tizzy, here in [...]

The beauty in music is that you can find something so different from your usual taste and get swept up in it. It may be a complete stranger to you at the start of the day, and come nightfall it is the soundtrack of your summer. This is what Sufjan Steven's masterpiece "Illinois" did for me back in 2005. I never had ventured into any type of folk at all, at the time British rock was the only thing that mattered to me. However once I heard the beauty of "Chicago" I fell in [...]

The Great Northwest have just released their debut Widespread Reign Of The Great NW . You can stream the lead single below. Bana gönderdikleri mail sayesinde haberdar olduğum Portland çıkışlı düşük tempolu rock grubu The Great Northwest ilk albümünü yayınlamış. Söylediklerine göre, The Dandy Warhols gitaristi Peter da albüme katkı sağlamış. Hiç beklemediğim derecede başarılı bulduğum için MySpace keşifleri altında bahsediyorum. Çıkış parçaları aşağıda ama bana soracak olursanız profillerinde yer alan diğer parçalar daha dinlenesi. Belki [...]
Chief John from The Widespread Reign of The Great Northwest Brian Coates moves to New York in 2004 where the music/art project that is to become The Great Northwest commences. It grows to involve over 20 people including Portland ex-pats Noah and Nathan Rice (the Christopher Twins), Josh Kalberg, and Dale Winston. After a year [...]

the great northwest chief john 2008 (française version) Je n'ai jamais regardé au loin sans penser à demain.

The Great Northwest The Widespread Reign of The Great Northwest (07.2008, Kora Records) Verdict = Did The Besnard Lakes just get out-Besnard-Laked? I've kind of been all over the place genre-wise lately with my reviews with the likes of Black Pus being immediately followed by Sawako and then Lullatone. I always wonder what the divide is among FG readers as far as that is concerned. Do some of you tune in just for the sleepy drone stuff, some for the bizarro pop stuff and others for the violently destructive stuff? Either way, I like [...]

This weeks's most sought after artist are the one and only The Walkmen , who have done nothing but improve on themselves since their beginnings in 2002. The New York band's melodramatic-pop can be found on their latest, You & Me . Also this week, check out Great Northwest's psychadelic, down-tempo music with their release of Widespread Reign of the The Great Northwest . Matt Pryor of The New Amsterdams also released his solo album, Confidence Man . This album was inspired [...]

The Great Northwest's debut, The Widespread Reign of the Great Northwest , (released 29th July on The Kora Records ) is the perfect record for the current long summer evenings; an album you can blissfully lose yourself in for the best part of an hour to it's trancelike charms. Once won't be enough though; lovingly textured and clearly designed as a complete listen - everytime you play-through the album's 13 tracks you'll hear and appreciate new layers, instruments, lyrics. It begs to be given the same amount of attention that has obviously gone into it's making. [...]

For you Dandy Warhols fans out there - particularly those of you who are dedicated to their laid-back, trippy jam sound - check out The Great Northwest's debut album, "The Widespread Reign of The Great Northwest," out tomorrow. Mixed at The Dandy Warhols' Odditorium, this ambient, chill album is the perfect album to sit back and relax to. Like the Dandy Warhols, they utilize a number of various
The Great Northwest are a Portland, Oregon band (home of the NBA team the Trailblazers, and a nice old-fashioned railroad bridge). They are set to release their debut album The Widespread Reign of on Kora Records next week. The album should be a treat, especially for fans of the Dandy Warhols. It's in a smiliar vein to the Dandys, and even features their guitarist Peter Holmstrom. The album is released on the 29th of the month in the US (tomorrow week), and has a damn cool cover. This is just a tease for the damn good [...]
For a music blog, I sure don't post enough actual music. Sure, I'll post tour info, and album info, and link to the occasional song, but it's been a long time since I regularly posted music from new, up-and-coming bands on this blog. My plan is to change that. I've been getting a ton of emails from bands and PR-folk lately, and, amazingly, I've been doing a much better job of actually

Finally! No, I'm joking. I'm not even sure what membership in that genre entails, but since I got an exclusive email from The Great Northwest (their record company, actually), I thought I might as well show my appreciation by plugging the band's upcoming, "much anticipated" debut. SO: The Great Northwest's first album, The Widespread Reign of The Great Northwest , comes out July 29, and promises to feature "lush soundscapes" and "savvy wordplay." So if you're into "ambient modulations," etc., (I'm pretty sure I'm not), check it out. Here's their myspace .
