So I haven't done a "New on the 'Nets" post in a while, but I did post some recommendations on Thursday already...so, this may be a condensed version. So in order to fill out the post, a Saturday Playlist is in order!! Couple of items that I need to recommend: Daytrotter posted their J. Tillman session from SXSW . Very Nice - go sign up and pick up the 4 tracks! Laundromatinee has their Great Lake Swimmers session posted as well. Hit them up for some of the video [...]

Waiting out a bad storm on the Delaware Water Gap - July 28th, 2008. One of the best days of last summer.

Anyone ever been to Chase Lake Wilderness or Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge in North Dakota to see the pelican colony? If you were to tally up all of the white pelicans that nest on two islands in this isolated alkali lake, you'd find more than 20,000, one of the largest colonies in North America. That figure is all the more impressive (and heartening) when you consider that only 50 birds inhabited the region when the area was officially slated for protection in 1908. [...]

RMNP Ranger: So do you want to rent a bear canister if you'll be out in the backcountry? Me: Nah, I think we'll be good. RMNP Ranger: Highly recommend it. Me: Yeah, well, I guess...actually, no we're fine. RMNP Ranger: You're sure? Me: Jim, do you want to get bear canister? Ranger says we should. Jim: No, man. Me: Ok, thanks, we're fine. Starting May 1st, Rocky Mountain National Park is requiring bear canisters on all overnight trips. (via [...]

Sierra Blogging Post : The House of Representatives signed legislation yesterday designating 2 million U.S. acres to be wild, including 250,000 acres in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park. A wilderness designation effectively requires that the land remain undisturbed by development of any kind.

Lance Mackey, master of the mush, became the third musher in the race's 37-year history to win in three consecutive years. His father, Dick Mackey, won the Iditarod in 1978 and his half-brother, Rick Mackey, won the race in 1983. Iditablog

Demoiselle Cranes: Demoiselle Cranes have to take one of the toughest migrations in the world. In late August through September, they gather in flocks of up to 400 individuals and prepare for their flight to their winter range. During their migratory flight south, Demoiselles fly like all cranes, with their head and neck straight forward and their feet and legs straight behind, reaching altitudes of 16,000-26,000 feet (4,875-7,925 m). Along their arduous journey they have to cross the Himalayan mountains to get to their over wintering grounds in India, many die from [...]
It snowed almost a foot the first day I listened to The Great Outdoors [Myspace] new EP, Winter. I dug it but I had this terrible suspicion that I only liked it because of the snow. With song... The 1,150 mile Iditarod started on March 7th. From yesterday, March 9th, on Iditablog : Leaving Finger Lake and heading into Rainy Pass is the thing nightmares are made of - regardless of how much experience you have. Multiple drops along Happy River, combined with hairpin turns and tricky switchbacks put veterans and rookies on a level playing field. It was on this section that in 2007 some of the most tested mushers, DeeDee Jonrowe and Doug Swingley (4 time champion) were both forced to scratch, DeeDee broke her [...]

Canadian folk-rock collective The Great Outdoors has completed their ambitious project to write, record and release an EP for each season. The three preceding EP's managed to perfectly capture the tone of each respective season and Winter introduces elements of blues and roots music to the mix to a stunning effect. "The Winter's Touch" plaintive tenor closes the door and invites you in from the cold as Melisa Devost 's beautiful voice warms your heart. "The Garbage Man Song" rambles along and features some distinctly Tom Waits influenced moments [...]

9 News Colorado : It's been a long and lonely winter trek for a female wolf that separated from her pack in Yellowstone National Park five months ago. The Colorado Department of Wildlife says a global position satellite collar, worn by the wolf, has helped them track her epic five-state journey, which has apparently brought her to Colorado in search of a mate. It says the wolf's last known location in Eagle County, is about 450 miles from its origin. The DOW estimates, however, that she may have walked an [...]

Golden Gate National Recreation Area : The San Francisco Garter Snake has been called North America’s most beautiful serpent. A fantastically colored species that does justice to its moniker, it is identified by its reddish-orange head with red, black, and blue racing stripes on its sides and back. Unfortunately this harmless and gorgeous critter isn’t easily seen, in part because it is on the brink of extinction. Restricted primarily to San Mateo County, the species’ preferred habitats—wet and marshy habitats with access to upland areas—have been hit hard by agricultural, residential, [...]

Lechuguilla Cave is located in Carlsbad Caverns National Park , NM. It's the fifth longest cave known to exist in the world (122 miles) and the deepest in the United States (1,604 feet). Up until the 1950s, the cave was considered pretty insignificant until a group of miners heard wind coming from the floor. In 1984 some people started digging and, by May of 1986, a new large walking passage was discovered that lead to the 122 miles of cave we now know. [...]
