I know the name of course, but in truth my knowledge of the man’s music is shamefully limited to a few collaborative recordings with fellow Australian artists and his 2007 album Stolen Apples , thanks to Reviewshine I have had a chance to listen to a handpicked 40 song collection of his work in the form of a greatest hits release that’s now out in the US and available as a two-CD set for $14 (or $ 10 for the digital version). In the business for over 30 years, according to Wiki Kelly has released [...]

The Smarts were a band from Atlanta/Athens, GA founded by husband and wife Keith and Shawn Smart Longino, with Danny White and David Foster, in 1980. They played their first gig to a sold-out crowd with The Brains , were contemporaries of The B52's and Pylon , and garnered a reputation as “the band that opened for R.E.M.” The Live At The 40 Watt Club ‘80 EP is a collection of one-take studio recordings from that year - although the “live” part of the recording was created with the help of Greatest Hits’ [...]

NPR is streaming R.E.M.'s 2-disc, 40-song overview of their career, Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage (out November 15th). Tom Perrotta discusses his new novel The Leftovers with the National Post . "Some writers are not afraid to be boring and that’s fine, they're offering something else, but that's one of the contracts I have with my readers — you're not going to be bored," says Perrotta, author of seven books, including Election, Little Children [...]

Given the lunacy currently employed to concoct band names ( the hardest part of being in a band if the Gospel according to Damon Albarn is to be believed ), Maria And The Gay isn't all that loony a moniker. Granted, the web domain is always highly likely to be available, but it's no Rocket Juice and the Moon now, is it? That said however, branding your debut full-length Greatest Hits Vol: 1 demonstrates potential derangement, unearthing a suggestion that not everything is entirely compos mentis in the camp of the Manchester-based troupe: firstly, [...]

Janis Lyn Joplin (January 19, 1943 – October 4, 1970) was an American singer, songwriter, painter, dancer and music arranger. She rose to prominence in the late 1960s as the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company and later as a solo artist with her backing groups, The Kozmic Blues Band and The Full Tilt Boogie Band. At the height of her career she was known as The Queen of Rock and Roll as well as The Queen of Psychedelic Soul. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Joplin number 46 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All [...]

Ozzie and Harriet's little boy produced some of the best music of the pre-Beatles era.

Greatest Hits is a compilation album by American adult contemporary artist Dan Fogelberg. It included two previously unreleased tracks, "Missing You" and "Make Love Stay", both of which were released as singles and peaked at chart positions #23 and #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, respectively. Both of the new songs made the Top 10 on the adult contemporary chart, with "Missing You" rising to #6 and "Make Love Stay" becoming the singer's third #1 on the AC chart. Daniel Grayling "Dan" Fogelberg (August 13, 1951 – December 16, 2007) was an American singer-songwriter, composer, and [...]

After R.E.M. ignited the blogosphere last month with the news that they had decided to "call it a day as a band" via a statement on their website, the beloved band have announced that they will release their final album, R.E.M., Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage, 1982 - 2011 , on Warner Bros. Records on November 15th, 2011. The album is a 40-song career-spanning retrospective that collects, for the first time ever, songs from R.E.M.'s entire back catalog, including the pioneering American band's years on both the IRS label (1982 [...]
Greatest Hits are a tough-to-Google duo who make homemade trash-pop. Their new "Girls On The Beach" video is made up of decaying, fuzzed-out VHS archival footage of scenes from Baywatch , The Grind , and other half-forgotten televised beachsploitation fare, and it's about as close to NSFW as you can get without showing actual nudity. Watch it below. Read More...
For two years The Buckinghams produced some of the finest singles of the late 1960s.
I've always been a folkie at heart, or least since discovering Elliott Smith, and in the last decade or so we've been blessed with all manner of acoustic acts: stylized studio experimentalists, meticulous chamber arrangers, people with guitars and a heart. Indie Folk's Greatest Hits is an attempt to gather the major movers and shakers of the "genre," such as it is, over the last 15 years or so, which ranges from rugged individualists like Iron & Wine to the slightly more scene-driven freak-folk trend. Because Spotify is missing the Drag City discography, Joanna Newsom, Smog/Bill Callahan and Bonnie "Prince" [...]

Okay. There is a whole lot going on here. Montage Populaire hail from Southampton, UK , that have spontaneously generated as far as I'm concerned. The five-piece create crowded and crisp experimental-pop music similar to what we've heard from Greatest Hits in the last year. Wide-ranging sounds from Space Oddity -era freak folk track to a chopped up, bizarro The Cure ballad. The stand-out track is "Separate Frames" where the singers voice hits an jerky falsetto, furthered by the frantic urgency in the jaw dropping chorus-only measurable against something like [...]
